Shooter = Fluid Dynamics action puzzle game in a Cave environment with enemies you have to shoot.
I dunno, out of all the names, this one seems the least fitting. Personally Depths sounded much cooler, and really fit the setting well. Oh well....the game will still be a blast I'm sure :^:
I doubt when the name "Shooter" comes up that many people will think of this:
Now they will!

I really hope I can get into Shooter. I like tower defense well enough, but I just don't want to play Monsters on my PS3. I'll grab the PSP edition and play the hell out of it though. Eden I just can't get my head around the platforming. They're both great games that I just don't 'get', but I keep on my PS3 in hopes that some day I will. Shooter is a great concept and I love side scrolling shooters, so I hope this is the one that hooks me.
except when people think of the term "Shooter", they either think this:
or maybe this

I'd agree if PixelJunk Racers wasn't already a weird take on the racing genre. I think the problem with most of the other name suggestions is that they're not simple enough, while Shooter is. I don't think Depths or Caves say much about the game. I probably would've suggested PixelJunk Earth if I were bothered back when they started it.
And really, "shooter" works, given that it's a dual stick shooter, no? Those types of games have been very common the last several years, with Geometry Wars, Everyday Shooter, that sort of thing.

I don't recall it being a dual stick shooter in the preview they showed. I could be wrong, but it was more about using your sponge to pick up lava or water and manipulate the environment.
Bringing back the thread since it comes out this week!

It's amazing we really haven't heard much of anything about this game for months, and then it suddenly gets announced for release just last week. If it weren't for Pixel Junk's previous work, I might actually be concerned.
Looking forward to firing up the ol' Triple for this one. Been so consumed by L4D2 and Dragon Age, I haven't given my PS3 any attention in weeks.

Why be concerned? If anything, announcing the game, showing a bit, and then letting us know it's coming a mere two weeks ahead is something I wish *MORE* companies would do.
Granted, I've been waiting since it was announced, but it's nice to see a break from months and months of hype and screens and videos.

Oh I'm not concerned about this one, as per my comments above. Pixel Junk has more than proved itself to the point now where something that looks even mildly entertaining is a must-buy for me. Shooter looks to be their best game to date.
However there are other games that get next to no mention, very little media and then all of a sudden they just get dumped onto the market to die an obscure death (usually because the developers ran out of money or time). Alpha Protocol almost suffered that fate this fall, but Sega came to its senses almost last minute and pushed the game back to next year to give Obsidian more polish time. Hearing almost nothing about a game is often a very, very bad sign.

They've done this with every release though. I recall hearing very little about Eden and Monsters before release.
Hell, I only heard of Monsters offhand from a friend who said "Oh yeah, did you hear those guys that made that racing game are making a tower defense game?", only to then find maybe one or two previews with very little media.
I think these guys do things right with promoting their games. Give you enough to be excited, but without ever over saturating with screens and videos.
Really loving it so far. Though I have one major complaint; I wish it was possible to turn off the dynamic soundtrack. Not because I dislike it, but since combat only lasts a few seconds, you don't really get to hear much of the up-tempo/vocal parts, which are really, really freaking good.
It kind of takes me out of the game, I'm sad to say. MAN, it might be the best game soundtrack of the year, so it's a shame it sounds a bit disparate.

oh man i've missed pixeljunk. this game is excellent. the music is superb. the whole thing is actually inspired a lot by an off-beat star wars, which is weird and cool
Yeah, I never really got into Monsters (tower defense isn't really my thing), but I can certainly see why people regard it so highly.
Eden was great, but frustrating as Hell.
Shooter seems to have found just the right balance.
Never played Racers, should I?
it can be a riot in multiplayer. it's a good game, but the single-player tournament layout it terribly frustrating and you need to go through it to unlock new modes - it kind of shot itself in the foot in a lot of ways.

I feel I should point out that with the latest patch (might need the DLC? Not sure) PixelJunk Eden has been made a lot easier. The time limit has been relaxed and the large blobs fill up much more of the time bar.
Also, if you fail, you can continue from the last spectra.
So yeah, if you found it too frustrating, try giving it another go.
it feels like a wicked platformer, as much as eden did. there are moments when you bust through a torrent of water to find an unexpected detour full of points, and exploring the little set-piece levels is great fun. the physics of the water and lava are smooth and interesting, and it's always throwing new mechanisms at you.
i found the shooting itself a little awkward, but there's an easy to use 'homing missile' that shoots out a bunch of heat-seeking missiles if your aim isn't spot-on. i think this was a very wise inclusion
honestly it's fun, but like all pixeljunk games it's real fun with another person - hilarious interactions where you unleash a torrent of lava on your unsuspecting buddy or shoot the little man he's a second away from rescuing is where the ultimate charm will be

Ah well, game still looks awesome.
Monsters
Eden
Shooter
It seems fitting.

Racers = Racing
Monsters = Tower Defense against Monster
Eden = Organic platforming
Shooter = Fluid Dynamics action puzzle game in a Cave environment with enemies you have to shoot.

They had a naming contest
And the person that won this contest
Submitted "Shooter"?
Yeah. Only 8 other people voted for that name, which I'm guessing is because it most people figured it was too generic.
I guess Pixeljunk had the final say, instead of it being a vote. They said they wanted something to convey the fact that it's a shooter.
Well, mission accomplished!
or maybe this
I doubt when the name "Shooter" comes up that many people will think of this:

Delicious. I'll pick this up then.

I'll probably get it when I get home from work, but it'd be nice to hear some reassuring words from real people who've already played it.
