Hello fellow Penny Arcadians! May is the month in which all six Star Wars films were released in theaters. What began in 1977 has become a major pop cultural phenomenon and is still popular today. Many of us grew up watching the original trilogy, and it is our lifeblood as gamers and nerds. To celebrate this great series, let us dedicate the month of May to playing many of the Star Wars classics. Break out your old floppy discs, game cartridges, CDs and DVDs and lets get our Star Wars on.
Lets use this thread to discuss and reminisce about old games. We should also use it to get some multiplayer games going and play some of the old classics together. I also encourage everyone to watch through the films during the month of May as well. For those who are into tabletop gaming, get together a Star Wars pen and paper campaign, or for anyone who has the old Decipher CCG cards, put together a deck and play with your friends.
May is Star Wars month!
To give some structure to this thread, below I will list a few of my own personal top picks. For these games I will give a brief description as well as any other pertinent information I decide to put in there. At the bottom of this thread I will include a spoiler tag with a fairly complete list of all Star Wars games to come out for all the major consoles including hand-helds.
Top PicksTIE Fighter
Platform: PC | Genre: Space Sim | Single-player | Metacritic Score: N/A | Joystick Recommended
You begin as a generic pilot in the Galactic Empire, but after a series of successful missions you begin to gain rank and recognition from your superiors. Eventually you are brought into a secret cabal of elite pilots who serve directly under the Emperor himself. As you progress you get mysterious tatoos burned onto your forearm with the force as a symbol of rank and status in the Empire. This game is the sequel to X-Wing, and it marks the first game in which the player takes the side of the Empire and gets to kill some Rebel scum. As a personal anecdote, this is the first game I ever owned on CD-Rom.
Note: This game marks the first appearance of the TIE Defender, which is the greatest personal starfighter ever.
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Platform: PC, XBox, Gamecube | Genre: First/Third Person Shooter | Singleplayer, Multiplayer Competitive | Metacritic Score: 81
This is the 3rd installment in the Dark Forces series. Once again, you fill the role of Kyle Katarn as you take on the Remnant of the Empire. This game boasts the best Lightsaber combat of any Star Wars game, and it has a pretty good story in the singleplayer. The multiplayer is a lot of fun as well. If you've ever wanted to deathmatch or CTF as a Jedi, this game is for you. With tons of great weapons, force powers, and lightsabers, this is a classic First/Third person game.
Knights of the Old Republic
Platform: PC, XBox | Genre: RPG | Singleplayer | Metacritic Score: 94
One of the masterpiece games of Bioware, this is a must-play for any Star Wars fan. It has a fantastic story, fun combat, and a whole host of great characters. Set thousands of years before the events of the movies, this game focuses on a time of war and conflict between the Republic and the Sith. You take the role of a Republic soldier/scout/scoundrel in a war against the evil Darth Malak. This game is largely built upon a D20 system and shares a lot of similarities with D&D.
Note: If you are playing this game on the XBox 360, the software emulation is a bit choppy at times. It is wise to save often and if things get too laggy, you should quit to the dashboard and restart the game.
Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
Platform: PC, XBox | Genre: RPG | Singleplayer | Metacritic Score: 86
This game improves many aspects of the interface and makes a lot of improvements to the various game mechanics. Among the best changes include an enhanced workbench system, in which you can break down items into components and rebuild them as other items. It also allows your character to reach a much higher level and includes several Jedi "prestige classes." This game has a much different feel as far as story goes. The first game has a very rigid story architecture. You have a very clear sense of purpose. KotOR 2 is much more organic. The story grows out of itself, and the path is not always clear. However, I think this game features a much stronger cast of characters, and it has much better roleplay aspects as you navigate your way through the Light or Dark side of the force.
Note: As noted in the first game, the software emulation on the 360 is not perfect and the game can get very choppy at times. Save often and reload if it becomes unbearable.
LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga
Platform: PS3, XBox 360, Wii, DS | Genre: Action/Adventure | Singleplayer, Local Co-Op (2) | Metacritic Score: 80
In terms of pure, childish fun, the LEGO games deliver in spades. Grab a friend and play through this on local co-op. It will be some of the most fun you ever have. This game also boasts a huge amount of value for a single game. It covers all 6 movies and has over 50 hours of gameplay if you go for 100%. The Complete Saga has a huge amount of unlockable characters, ships, and power-ups.
Shadows of the Empire
Platform: N64, PC | Genre: 3rd Person Shooter | Singleplayer | Metacritic Score: N/A
This is a classic extended universe story, set in the time between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The game has a lot of fun levels and battles, a pretty good story, and most importantly, it features an awesome playable Hoth Battle. If you ever wanted to fly a Snow Speeder and attach a tow cable to an AT-AT, this is your game. In fact, the Hoth level of this game was so popular that it inspired an entire game based on flying missions, Rogue Squadron.
Galactic Battlegrounds
Platform: PC | Genre: RTS | Singleplayer, Multiplayer | Metacritic Score: 75
This game is built on the Age of Empires 2 engine. Its basically a profesionally made AOE2 mod, but its still fun. The original game features 6 playable factions -- Empire, Rebel, Wookie, Trade Federation, Gungan, and Royal Naboo. The expansion pack, titled "The Clone Campaigns" adds two more factions, the Confederacy (Count Dooku) and the Republic Clone Army.
Perk: You get to kill Gungans.
Battlefront II
Platform: PC, XBox, PS2 | Genre: Shooter/Space Sim | Singleplayer, Multiplayer | Metacritic Score: 84
Battlefront II is a game which recreates a series of famous battles from the movies. It has both ground based battles as well as space battles. Both the ground and space are a lot of fun. This game supports local co-op, and I definitely recommend grabbing a buddy and playing some battles. This game also has a galactic conquest mode which is a planetary conquest game where you must conquer all of the planets and defend them against computer assaults. The game also has persistent stats and as you play, your character improves with the various weapons and skills. This game features 4 factions: Rebel, Empire, Republic, Trade Federation.
Big Fun: Flying a ship into the hangar of the opponent, stealing one of their starfighters and then killing dudes with their own ships.
Empire at War
Platform: PC | Genre: RTS | Singleplayer, Multiplayer | Metacritic Score: 79
Where Battlefront is the FPS of land and space combat, Empire at War fills the same capacity as an RTS. Touting both a space RTS as well as a ground based RTS, this is a big game. If you want to control massive fleets of Star Destroyers and maraud around the galaxy conquering planets and subjugating them to your will, this is a great game for you. The basic game features missions as both the Rebels and the Empire. The expansion, "Forces of Corruption" allows you to control a Super Star Destroyer, which is pretty awesome. It also adds a new faction that's sort of a neutral smuggler/scoundrel faction.
Republic Commando
Platform: PC, XBox | Genre: FPS | Singleplayer | Metacritic Score: 78
There was a lot of shovelware that came out with the release of the new trilogy, but Republic Commando stands out as one of the few good games based on the new movies. You take the role of a squad leader of Republic Clones as you battle through a series of missions against the Trade Federation. This is a squad tactics game has a large number of context-specific areas where you do cool stuff with your squadmates.
Note: If you play this game on the PC, I highly recommend grabbing a patch, as the game has a number of small bugs which can detract from the gameplay.
The Force Unleashed
Platform: PS3, XBox 360, Wii, DS, PSP | Genre: Action | Singleplayer | Metacritic Score: 73
The controversial game of 2008 -- many loved it, many hated it. This game was the last game to ever be developed in-house by Lucas Arts. Set in between the new trilogy and the original trilogy, you take the role of a secret apprentice of Darth Vader. The story of this game is very good. I highly recommend that anyone who considers themselves to be a Star Wars fan play this at least once, simply to absorb the awesome story. This game has a number of interesting levels and awesome physics. You have a lightsaber, but your character is so strong with the force, that the saber is rather superfluous.
Big Fun: Shocking Jawas with Force Lightning
Note: If you want the "canon" ending, take the light side option when given the choice.
Super Empire Strikes Back
Platform: SNES | Genre: Side-scroll Action | Singleplayer | Metacritic Score: N/A
All three of the "Super" Star Wars games are great, but my favorite is Empire Strikes Back. However, during Star Wars month I definitely recommend playing all three of them. These are side-scrolling action games where you mostly play as Luke Skywalker, although you occasionally play as other characters such as Han, Leia, and Chewie. Super Empire features a number of force powers as you advance the game, and for its time, the lightsaber boss fights against Darth Vader were pretty bitchin'.
Rogue Squadron
Platform: N64 | Genre: Starfighter | Singleplayer | Metacritic Score: N/A
As mentioned above, this game was directly inspired by the success of the Hoth level of Shadows of the Empire. This game expands on that one mission and is a full game of starfighter action as you pilot various vehicles in a series of missions against the Empire. It spawned two sequels, both of which are also pretty fun, but none are as magical as this first game.

Jedi Academy
Platform: PC, XBox | Genre: First/Third Person Shooter | Singleplayer, Multiplayer | Metacritic Score: 81
This is not a sequel to Jedi Knight, but rather a side story. Kyle Katarn is in this game, but you do not play as him. You play as a student at Luke's Jedi Academy (from the EU). This game has a semi-nonlinear story in which you choose from a list of tiered missions. The story of this game is not as interesting as the other Jedi Knight games, but it also has some of the most fun saber combat in any Star Wars game to date. Notable additions to the game include the Double-bladed lightsaber and Dual Wield saber options.
Dark Forces
Platform: PC | Genre: FPS | Singleplayer | Metacritic Score: N/A
You play as Kyle Katarn, the greatest action hero of the Rebels. This dude is the guy who stole the original Death Star plans from an Imperial outpost. Dark Forces is the first Star Wars FPS game and it is quite good. The story is largely focused on stopping a secret project the Empire is working on, the Dark Trooper. This game is a pure shooter and does not have any of that fancy lightsaber business that the sequels have. This is Kyle Katarn pre-force. Back when he was just a lean, mean dude that could single-handedly bring down the Empire solely with a blaster pistol. Yeah, Kyle is a badass.
Rebellion
Platform: PC | Genre: Turn based strategy | Singleplayer, Multiplayer | Metacritic Score: N/A
Rebellion was among the first of the strategy games bearing the Star Wars logo. It is a turn based game and features a bit of diplomacy and a whole lot of planetary conquest. Mon Mothma plays a large role in this game and the player acts as fleet commander of the Rebel forces. Honestly, its been forever since I've played this game and it is near the top of my list for replays this month simply because I don't remember a whole lot about it.
It is amazing how many of these I have played.
Blasphemy. I love Shadows of the Empire. It has the best train level ever, and the best jetpack ever.
Haha same here.
Also, Pod racer was one of my favorite racing games of the N64 era.
I loved KOTOR 1 and 2, as well as Force Unleashed. I'd have to agree with the list, other then the fact it's missing pod racer.
The Pipe Vault|Twitter|Steam|Backloggery|3DS:1332-7703-1083
You could say that about any of the older games on this list. Shadows of the Empire is a total classic. Trying to get those challenge points was the hardest thing ever.
Although that speedbike race totally sucked.
I love the SNES Star Wars games to death. Mine, usually. I think I beat them many years ago. Damn the cantina boss in the first.
agree that SotE hasn't aged well, but it is still great fun - enough so, that I picked up a used copy last year.
I used to play the shit out of that with my dad
Great, now you just rolled back 10 years of intensive therapy. I hope you're happy.
I loved Empire at War a lot, but as I am patently bad at FPS', I quickly got to a point in the campaign where all of my planets were totally surrounded and being constantly bombarded and I ended up quitting.
And I refused to put it on easy.
Anyway, KOTOR is fucking fantastic and anyone who hasn't played Jedi Power Battles should give it a shot, it's not nearly as bad as people say. Dreamcast version preferably, if not PS1.
Kotor is pretty much the game that made me take a second look at wrpgs. Such an amazing game. It also made me fall in love with bioware
The Pipe Vault|Twitter|Steam|Backloggery|3DS:1332-7703-1083
You do realize that it isn't May for two days?
It's pretty much the best FPS.
Also I agree that Dark Forces is rockin'.
I was like 8, but I still don't blame you if you hate me.
Wait people didn't like jedi power battles? You got to play co-op as Plo Koon and Mace Windu!
What's not to like.
I loved the game so much for that reason alone
The Pipe Vault|Twitter|Steam|Backloggery|3DS:1332-7703-1083
I loved it too
I think it was the sort of "open world" feel it had. Also the multiple solutions to various quests the game presented to you
Platforming sucked though
PSN ID : DetectiveOlivaw | TWITTER | STEAM ID | NEVER FORGET
I loved that game too. I really just liked leveling up and getting new combos and force powers.
That's all I want in a brawler game. The ability to get new and awesome combos as I progress through the game, and give each character their own combos so that I have a reason to go through it all again.
White FC: 0819 3350 1787
Me and a friend played it in co-op so much, at about the same time I liked The Phantom Menace, so we though it was the shit.
I played as that 'alien guy with the yellow lightsaber' (Plo Koon) and my friend played as Yoda.
Probably one of my favourite co-op expierences ever, in fact.
KotOR2 sucks.
You suck.
White FC: 0819 3350 1787
I used the blaster all the time, just for how badass I felt back then:
I'm a Jedi. I've got kickass force powers, and sword made out of fucking light.
But Ima shoot you in the face, anyway.
Oh please for the love of God can we leave this argument out of this thread?
As awesome as Jedi Outcast was, it's really about the multiplayer. The SP doesn't really hold up all that well, at least the first few levels.
Jedi Knight, with the high resolution texture pack, is seriously one of the best games I've played. It looks pretty great for what it is, and the level design and gameplay is just fantastic.
One of the best games ever.
I can still remember the IG-88 fight being a pain in the ass.
Fuck that train.
Resident 8bitdo expert.
Resident hybrid/flap cover expert.
I will add a few more additional picks to my second post. The first post was starting to get pretty big so I decided to put it up. I'll add a few other games soon.
I've been looked at funny for it, but RC is so damn good. I would kill for RC2, but it's never going to happen. Just to think what could be done with the whole squad idea, plus some coop (inexcusable that RC didn't have it), and it could really be a solid entry into the market.
Lucasarts, I don't like you.
There's something you're missing and it's staring you right in the face.
