Oh please for the love of God can we leave this argument out of this thread?
There's something you're missing and it's staring you right in the face.
Poor Pancake.
While yes, I did miss this initially, I'm not going to edit it, because inevitably someone is going to come in here and start it up. Granted, I doubt anything will be able to deter whoever does it, so I guess it's pointless.
Any other geezers out there remember Rebel Assault and Rebel Assault 2? Those games were so silly with their faux-live action gameplay on rails, but man I played them a lot.
Man, this thread is like Nostalgia Season for me.
I owned Rogue Assault 2, and it was pretty hella fun for what looking bad was probably a very cheesy and terrible game.
Live acting in cutscenes is all well and good, but at the time when it was the done thing the filming itself looked absolutely terrible, and it didn't exactly help that a lot of the time they tried to shoehorn them into CG environments.

I also played the crap out of this shitty game. I remember there being a canyon level that I couldn't beat without cheat codes.
I knew someone would mention that, but I mean a GOOD game. And by a GOOD game, I mean a GOOD game.
EDIT: You're not a loser, I meant first loser in my little game. As in not the winner. The first winner is whoever agrees with me and says that Yoda Stories doesn't count.

I sucked so bad at it, and I have no clue why.
I seem to remember getting stuck on the second or third level, yet I kept on playing it, over and over and over.
The TIE Fighter remake is about as necessary and likely as the Final Fantasy VII remake: absolutely and not bloody.
TIE Fighter is to this day one of the best PC games ever created.
And yeah, I know we'll never get a Lucas/Sierra style P&C Star Wars game, but it's nice to dream!
Of course, I can always just make my own...
And risk being banned from the Ranch...
Hmmmmmmmmm...

Man, TIE Fighter is so godly. I remember when I first got inducted into that secret order of pilots. I think my jaw dropped at that reveal. I just wasn't expecting it at all. That game really nailed the coffin on the Imperials being a bunch of super-secret badasses.

TIE Advanced for life, dawgs.
I was really young when I played TIE Fighter, and I think my youngness played a big role in my amazement and awe at the secret order. Like you, I was really absorbed by this part of the story, and sadly back in the day I was never good enough to get very far so I never saw how it plays out. All I knew is that the Emperor approved of my actions and gave me force tattoos to prove it.
Side Note: I updated the second post with a few additional picks.

According to wikipedia, TIE Fighter was released in 94, so I was about 11 when I played this game. Sounds right. I was of course abysmal, being both young and not having a joystick, but I managed to beat the damn thing anyway. If I could remember the secret of my success, I would tell you. I'm pretty sure I did not use the invulnerability option built into the game. If I recall correctly, you couldn't progress in the missions if you turned on any of the cheats.
Yeah, that was how it was in both X-Wing and TIE Fighter. They built invulnerability and infinite weapons right into the game, but if you enabled them, you could not progress the story. I don't remember exactly when I got TIE Fighter, but I was between the age of 11 and 13.
I own X-Wing and its two expansions on 3.5" floppies, which is unfortunate, because my current PC does not even have a floppy drive.
Somebody mentioned Jedi Power Battles! My friend and I played the shit out of that game when we were kids. I remember we hated the Coruscant level. You had to make sooooo many completely bullshit jumps, you couldn't even see where you were supposed to land on a lot of them. That game had some of the worst platforming ever actually. I remember parts of Tatooine being a bitch for just that reason as well.
I loved Jedi Academy. It will get added to my additional picks list. While it had a fairly weak story, it also made some improvements to lightsaber combat and added double bladed and dual wield options.
I really hated the demo. It felt like a cheap knockoff of Jedi Knight II.
It was so stupid, also. For starters, you make a custom character. Then he promptly starts talking in a cutscene, saying the most annoying and obvious things possible.
There's some area you clear fairly early on with a lot of enemies. As soon as you kill them all, your character is suddenly pinned down by the enemy fire from three of the wimpy guys you just killed. Bwa?
So you go running to get inside a nearby base. As soon as you enter, normal fire from a blaster (the same stuff you've been getting hit with since the game started. The same stuff that's been hitting the wall behind you for eons) hits the top of the doorway AND THE WHOLE THING CAVES IN! Trapping you inside with like six feet of rubble. WHAT?
This is the demo, mind you. The segment they distribute for free because it's really cool and shows off the rest of the game.
I may have to plug in a Wii to break out Rogue Squadron 2 and 3. What I wouldn't give for an HD Rogue Squadron. And a sequel to Republic Commando. And a new Jedi Knight. Dammit Lucasarts.

It's actually a really good game. It's far more consistently good than Jedi Knight 2 with much better level design and enemy placement.

People... People want to go back and play Rogue Squadron 3?
I would go so far as to say that RC is the third best Star Wars game after Tie-Fighter and Jedi Knight. Very few squad based shooters have presented squad mates in any capacity beyond cannon fodder and the squad mates in RC being likable and well characterized make them stand out. Basically RC is on the god tier of squad based shooters such as the original R6 and SWAT4, despite being a very much action oriented shooter.
Frem: The six feet of rubble is caused by a rocket launcher :P
RC2 was always the best for me, with RC3 really bringing the series down.
In RC2 they pretty much covered all the bits from the movies I actually wanted to play, and the terrible location choices + on-foot sections really ruined RC3 for me.
Also, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga is still up there. I gotta assume erroneously.
I really enjoyed The Complete Saga. Granted I played it entirely co-op with a friend which makes a huge difference. Why don't you like it? I really enjoy all the LEGO games.
Yeeaaaah Star Wars games. Republic Commando? Fantastic squad based shooter. Great soundtrack too. TIE Fighter? Best flight sim ever. Rebellion? Wonderful RTS that lots of people hated but whatever, it was fantastic. Dark Forces II? Some of the best level design ever. Dark Forces was Star Wars + DooM, and awesome. KOTOR II is one of the best RPGs ever made. And that's just the best ones; there are plenty of very good and moderately good Star Wars games.
Really, it all owes a lot to George Lucas, who was super big on computer games and was just as responsible for Lucasfilm Games/Lucasarts as he was for Pixar. If Lucasfilm Games hadn't been going strong with crazy shit like Ballblazer or something or Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, we might never have made it to all the amazing Star Wars (and Indiana Jones) games. Imagine if Star Wars games were just like every other movie license! We'd miss so much...
Anyways if I had to strangle a puppy for a TIE Fighter remake, I'd probably say "I'll do two puppies if you throw in a Republic Commando sequel" or something.

I'd have to agree with Lucascraft here. They're not OMGAmazing, but they're definitely fun platformers, and thats a genre we don't see enough from any more as is.
I've always admired you for your RC avatar, Tycho.
That game. I like how the only real mention of jedi is the easter egg on the Cruiser.
Also, fuck everyone else, the Clone Wars game was some good shit. The tank parts, anyway. Not so much the on foot...though, they weren't as bad as Rebel Strike.

So true
I have played through TIE Fighter multiple times, beginning from when I was 7 years old, and the sense of awe I first had stays with me throughout all my replays.
My game consistently crashed after battle 6 mission 2, so I was never able to experience the end of the game.
How much did I miss?
The "emperor's stool pigeon" line still stick with me.

it had its moments. granted, most of the moments were just prettier versions of similar moments from 2... but I enjoyed it for the most part. Walker levels were fun. On foot levels were downright abysmal.

I miss the whole live acting thing during cutscenes in general. There's no uncanny valley when you're staring at the real thing.
Rebel Assault 2 was one of my favorite games as a kid. I still remember having a really tough time flying through that, what was it, a mine or something, as the Falcon. I was using an old Logitech game pad and didn't know better back then. I played it solely on my Grandpa's computer, too, when he got a really nice new shiny Gateway.
I bought a bunch of late mid-90s thru early-00s Star Wars games off ebay a while back. Be slowly going back through and playing.
Finished DF (for the first time),
Finished JK (for the 3rd),
half way through MotS,
tried playing RA2, but it's terrible to play with a track pad.
Finished KOTOR twice, sadly my laptop (macbook) won't play KOTOR2.
Think I'll throw on SotE next.
I need a joystick so I can finally get around to playing all the way through XWA.

In fact, I think I'm gonna add this link to my OP for people who want to get a lot of quality for a pretty good price.
My only beef with the product is the name. If they are gonna call something "The Best of" and not include TIE Fighter, then they are lying.
