He showed up, elbowed Gibbs out of the way with a little friendly teasing, then delivered a public thank you to Souter for his years of service.

Eh, all the press yelling for him when he was on his way out annoyed me. Not even the "come back..." was funny. I mean, I get how it's funny, but I couldn't laugh.

Obama's HEY was great though. The look on the press' faces was like WHAT THE?

Edit - Gibbs did a nice job when getting back to the podium too with his "I have this from the highest levels of government" joke.

Sort of off topic and I mentioned it in [chat] but I can make a case that it relates to this: I met Bill Clinton today. I was kinda just expecting to maybe get a camera phone picture but he actually stopped and shook my hand. It was really weird. Like out of place weird and I don't really have a distinct memory of it happening other than it happened

I was showing the photos to a co-worker and he commented that I was actually physically shaking.

I've never met a president before let alone shaken their hand. It was kinda cool.

Yeah, I'm kicking myself for not knowing about Jimmy Carter's book signing thing that had a stop in Chicago last year. That would have been awesome. And if H.W. Bush ever comes to town again like he did in 2000 I need to be all over that shit. I managed to snag a free seat for a speech Clinton gave at GreenBuild when it was at McCormick Place thanks to being a volunteer at it. Sorta meh, but still cool to have been able to see it. These kinds of opportunities only come along so often given the exclusive nature of the X-Presidents club.

    Interesting.

I say that because I live in a different Springfield and also saw Obama. It was just a rally but still, I was very close and got some decent pictures.

Also a video of him making a joke about Wild Bill Hickock.

If I recall correctly he implied he was going to duel McCain on the issue of taxes. This is awesome because Bill Hickock shot and killed a guy in a duel in my city's town square.

The dude is many things, but a uniter is not one of them. Consider the fact that we had more bipartisanship in George Bush's first year than all of Obama's 100 days. I fear what crazy shit the Dems will pass now without the Republicans having an influence. Of all his shortcomings, this is the one that hurts the most.
Why do you put so much of a onus on the president of the Executive branch to be 'bipartisan' when, ultimately, how fucking bipartisan can someone in the position of supreme executive be? That's like ... not what the Executive branch is about. And I mean, even then, he was more bipartisan than most other presidents because he chose appointees from outside Democrat party lines, either newcomers or people that are moderates (and he tried to bring Republicans in, but they LOL'd at him).

What does Specter have to do with Obama? What does Congress have to do with Obama? What about the Republican minority stonewalling absolutely everything with reckless and impotent indignation?

How does this qualify as his shortcoming, if it is a shortcoming? How is it the one that hurts him the most? Also, can you cite the 'more bipartisanship' in George Bush's first year (did you mean George W. Bush, btw?), making sure to differentiate it from some kind of bipartisanship in the Legislative branch (though I don't know how you measure this, anyway)?

In a broader sense, could you give us some specific examples of what you think Obama has done wrong wrt policy, and what you think he should have done instead?

Being bipartisan is a two-way street. When someone extends their hand (Obama, Democrat) the other has to extend their own (Republicans) to make it work. Obs, please provide an example where Obama did not offer his hand before the Republicans, or the Republicans offering a hand to work bipartisanly with Obama and he didn't accept.

I think we've all agreed it went like this:

Obama offers to discuss matters of pertinence with republicans, and wants to reach a compromise that will make both sides somewhat happy. Republicans sniff his hand, growl menacingly, piss on his hand, bite it, then fart in his face.

Then people say he's not bipartisan, because he didn't try hard enough to make the republicans agree with his points of view. Like try with mass mind control.

Not to be flippant, but that's basically what the Dems did under Bush with the GOP majority.

However, not that that's a sound reason to be dickish. I might put it to Obama to suggest more line-item legislature to meet the GOP halfway on some things, but I still don't think they'd go for it. These days (and really, for as long as I can honestly remember), it seems more and more that the purpose of Congress is to back your party and keep your job above all other things, as the logic goes:

"Congressman A elected to Party X's seat" + "Bill proposed by completely unrelated Congressman B supporting platform issue for Party X" = "Vote for bill by Congressman A."

Which is honestly a bit of math I'm afraid might derail Obama. I've long thought that he was too moderate for Capital Hill, and wouldn't put it past his own party to fuck him over in the name of brand loyalty should he look to be making a percievedly unpopular hypothetical compromise with the GOP. Same thing happened to Bush and McCain over their softer stances on immigration.

But right now, I'm currently ashamed I ever identified with the GOP. Not that it was ever all this bad, but these days? I hardly recognize them as the party of Lincoln. Hell, I hardly recognize them as the party of Nixon.

Really? You don't think its accurate to link them to the President who (at least up to FDR) centralized governmental power most in the federal government, created the IRS, was the most socially liberal up to that time (effectively, maybe JQA was moreso), opposed foreign interventionism, was conciliatory towards even actual traitors after the war, and embraced the Living Document school of Constitutional analysis?

A President should be bipartisan whenever possible. And it's always possible. He is the voice of the people who voted for him and those who did not.
What does Specter have to do with Obama?

Specter was Obama's 100 day gift, whom will now grant the Dems a filibuster proof majority in Congress allowing them to bulldoze and steamroll through god knows what kind of fuck bills. Specter now makes Obama more powerful than you could ever imagine, assuming he lays down like a dog and votes Left more often than he votes Right.
What does Congress have to do with Obama?

    Work.
What about the Republican minority stonewalling absolutely everything with reckless and impotent indignation?

They're pissed off, probably because Obama has effectively soothed them. You don't think that if the Republicans had a majority right now with a Republican President in power the Democrats would not be doing the exact same shit? They'd be doing it even worse.
How does this qualify as his shortcoming, if it is a shortcoming?

When you are a leader, you take responsibility when things go well, but you also take responsibility when things fucked, whether you did anything or not.
How is it the one that hurts him the most?

Because this isn't the kind of Change we believed in. We really thought Washington was going to be a different more bipartisan place with Obama. It is not.
Also, can you cite the 'more bipartisanship' in George Bush's first year (did you mean George W. Bush, btw?), making sure to differentiate it from some kind of bipartisanship in the Legislative branch (though I don't know how you measure this, anyway)?

Bush Tax cuts for example. Lots of Democrats voted in favor, as opposed to...
