If someone teaches me how to get this running, I'm there... so long as no one eviscerates me for being bad. And by bad I mean not knowing anything.
simply install the BYOND client, register a name and run the server in the OP after going to File and then Locations, and then Bookmark for easy use
But the interface is like whoa.
Just of curiosity, but do you guys run vent or anything while playing so people can ask questions or something? Or do you guys stay "in character" the whole time?
Actually that second part sounds really cool.

There is an ooc chat option ingame. Though it sometimes gets turned off if the admins get tired of too many people going "shit, [guy] killed me" and the like.
:edit:
General SS13 Dos and Don'ts
DO:
Keep your IC and OOC identities seperate. While many of us have gotten into the habit of sticking with one name, making us easily identifiable, the ability to hit the random name button and be an unknown quantity is handy. It also theoretically gives you a bit more freedom in asking about stuff OOC without revealing who the traitor is IC and such. Act reasonably rational IC. While everyone being perfectly behaved leads to boring as shit rounds, people running around with no clothes and a flamethrower doesn't improve the situation much. Leading security on a 10-minute chase because they stopped you for littering or something is also a bad idea, Jukka. If security is being dickish for no valid reason (you trying to escape them tends to be valid, incidently), use AdminHelp to let an admin know they're being dicks. Try and keep things interesting if you are the traitor. If you manage to pull off a flawless theft that nobody notices, good for you! Now find a way to get the crew to call the shuttle, so we don't get a boring 3-hour round. Ask for help if you have no clue what to do. For general stuff like how to first-aid, OOC is fine. If your needs require you to be discrete (you naughty traitor you), use AdminHelp so only the people that should know better than to use the knowledge of what you're up to against you will know.
DON'T:
Complain about IC events in OOC. Yes, someone just killed/tased/raped/cuffed you for no apparent reason. However, if that person was the traitor, your complaining in OOC just ruined the round, because now EVERYONE knows what he did. Nice job, Slick. If you suspect your problem is from someone being a dick rather than a traitor, complain using AdminHelp, and it will be looked into. Leave the server because you died. Unless you're watching the thread like a hawk for when the next round starts and/or have other methods of being informed as to such, leaving once you're dead means that we have less and less people as rounds go on, meaning less awesome. Also, it IS possible to be revived, so just because you're dead doesn't mean you're out for good. Use metagame knowledge for evil. Back in the old versions, the traitor's syndicate uplink was a seperate object that appeared in your pocket, and you also didn't start in your proper uniform color. This had the effect of having your radio pop out for all to see while you were changing into your proper jumpsuit. As you can imagine, acting on seeing this radio led to short, shitty rounds. Pocket-checking everyone at round start had similar results. Which is why the PA server had assorted rules to the effect of "don't do this shit." These days, the uplink is hidden inside a radio on the traitor's person, and it is unlocked by tuning to a specific frequency. DO NOT TAKE SUSPECTED TRAITORS' RADIOS AND FLIP THROUGH ALL THE FREQUENCIES. If you catch them with an unlocked uplink, fine and dandy, but don't go hunting for something you technically shouldn't know exists. Be a dick AI. This sorta ties in with the previous don't. There are several people that dislike the AI because it is omniscient and will always be able to report the slightest wrongdoing instantly. While untrue, I am apparently slightly lucky when it comes to wrongdoing under the nose of the AI. So, to AI players: kindly cut people some slack. If you see the traitor spawn a revolver or something from his uplink, and the round's just started, just ignore it and go about your business. This game thrives on good rounds, which depends on you to allow them to happen.

Playing on your own can be pretty interesting.
I forgot that closets could be blown apart by meteors and thought I'd hide in one until the meteor shower was over. A meteor obliterated the wall right next to me which followed up with several more one of which smashed the closet. I tried to make a run for it but they were like homing in on me destroying every wall I ran past. I hid in the engine generator room until I thought it was over and all of a sudden the engine is blown open from a goddamn plasma storm and I'm instantly incinerated.
Starting to remember the awesome randomness of everything in this.
NO BEING A JERK! A bit of insanity is to be expected, but don't be outright mean and cruel unless it's appropriate for the role and situation. This goes especially for the captains.
Its still captain's orders.
How bout a rule for not being a shit captain

So do most games last less than one minute? I barely figured out how to put water in the mop bucket before someone took the mop, killed someone with it, and then was killed by the cops, game over. This was after a game where I was still trying to figure out how to pick up the mop when the game ended with the message "the wizard has been killed."
What gives?

So, not sure if he got killinated, logged out, then monkeyed, or logged out then got monkeyed, but on the off chance it was the latter, Traitors, if you're logging out and still alive, say so on AdminHelp so we can pass off your duties to someone else. I just noticed however long into this current round that we're without a logged-in traitor, which makes it HELL to try and figure out what your objective is, thanks to SS13's wonderful admin panel being remarkably dumb in several cases.

I enjoyed making puns about Dick Mcdickerson's immeninent assassaination, and eventual cold stiff body.
Even more funny was that he was a blithering idiot so when I scheduled a staff meeting to excommunicate myself, he ended up blowing the charges off by saying random things.
