Goddammit...now I want to play Escape Velocity again....
Even after all these years, that's my favorite open world space game (not quite a "sim" though)
Gotta destroy my backlog so I can play X3...
You may be able to call for help, but I didn't since I assumed it would tell me if I could (silly Snot, sims don't work that way!)
Yeah you can call for help. What you do is log onto a server, and then ask one of the other pilots for help. This is actually not a terribly uncommon experience and some pilots introduction to playing EvoMerc on-line.
I wish X3 had a flight model that didn't suck, and a storyline that wasn't pants on head retarded.
The universe and sim aspects are amazing...and at least the flight model would be easy to fix.
And a damage model.
Dammit, you should know without a shadow of a doubt when you are taking hits.
That's just a UI thing. Same with how the missiles explode without even a tiny puff so you have no idea you managed to connect when you're trying to shoot them down.
And it would be just as easy to fix.
I wish designers would look at how the three great space sims did it and see where they can improve on that, and if they can't, just copy it.
Like WC:P's explosions. Satisfying, and you know you've been nudged, or that the ship you've been shooting is toast.

See, I quit playing X3 only a few hours into it because I felt totally overwhelmed. I've downloaded a guide to help me this time but I was hoping to find out if things like a better external camera were available. Then I found this X3 Universe forum.
Well, digging over this X3 Universe forum, it looks like the game can be modded. but things like explosions and External cameras can't? That's a bit silly. This forum is huge.... So I'm not sure I've been looking in the right place just yet. I'm trying to find a sort of "Must have" mods thread. You know, most games end up having those mods that blow everything out of the water. Hopefully my time well spent here digging around will improve my X3 experience so that I can finally enjoy it for what it is.

How is Evochron's multiplayer? How many people per server? Servers easy to find?

There are more mods than I know what to do with. Some of them allow for some frankly incredible things, like turning the wars into proper wars, with moving battle fronts, stations getting wrecked and rebuilt, the whole nine yards. As a first order cull, anything by Gazz will make your life easier--beyond that, I haven't looked in a year or two, and no doubt folks are doing something interesting...
And yeah, the game is absolutely overwhelming at first. The UI doesn't help, but I'm not sure how much it could, given how much stuff you can do. I recommend finding yourself a newbie guide stat and more or less following it.
I don't want to dogfight. I've been doing that shit since X-Wing and Tie Fighter.
I want someone competent to make Derek Smart's game.
I need to crash into a system, launch those dogfighters and watch as my escort protects me from their junk. Then launch one big-ass torpedo into the sun and hard-lock the galaxy
Once you gain rank in Starshatter you can play as a carrier.

Well, yeah, but I *also* mean a better damage model. As in, currently, the only effect that I can routinely see when blowing up other ships is that they slow down. I'd much rather you be able to damage or destroy weapon implements, comms systems, shielding, etc., like you can in X-Wing and Freespace, by shooting the appropriate part of the target.

That's what ultimately killed any desire I had to play the X series. I just felt absolutely disconnected from anything that actually had to do with flying or fighting. EVE Online had more visceral flight and combat than the X games.

I'm leaning towards giving Starshatter a try now. I've been avoiding it for the admittedly petty reason that it has a really stupid name.
"Where do stars come from, Daddy?"
"Droppings."
"Huh?"
"They're the fecal remains of a god."
"Which god, Daddy?"
"The Starshatter, obviously."
@SammyF glad I could help The last mission in the training campaign teaches the carrier.
@Ash-Housewares Thanks:) I am gonna make a point to drop in next time I fire up evo.

@Lord_Snot : If you're willing to post your last-known coordinates, you can join a server and somebody can come to fill up your tank. I can't (on account of not owning the game) but I know it's possible.

Ah, thanks for the info man. No thanks, @Big Isy, you'd probably just crash me into a sun. :P
The thing that you need to understand about X3 is that it isnt really a space sim, its more of a 4X space economic game masquerading as a space sim. Once you understand that its not really about dogfights and conquest through violence, but more conquest through trade, it becomes a lot more fun.
That is not to say that combat can't be a thing, but you need a strong trade infrastructure to get you the money to do the really fun stuff. A collection of mods that I reccomend to everyone a million times is Lucikes Script Collection, espeically CODEA: http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=271491
X3 is just as much about mods as Skyrim is.

Oh, I would have offered to help if I knew this was recent. I recalled a similar story when you were giving the "after-action reports" in the steam thread after getting the game so thought this was a incident in the past.
I will take one for the team and run out of fuel if someone really wants to give it a shot? As a bonus I'll do it Max speed with afterburners on. NEWTONIAN PHYSICS!

ok.... I tried hopping on the PA EvoM server earlier this evening and was getting booted off every I don't know 10 minutes. Is this normal? Is it on my end and if so what should I be looking at? I just hope my progress got saved last time as I was picking some tougher fights and had a nice battle that I was pretty happy to fly (very quick jmp) away from without dying.:)
I am having fun flying around in X3 but I always play with Military Base Revamp on and am currently following a huge Argon carrier group into Paranid Prime. the combat's more fun when there's dozens of big huge angry ships shooting at everything around you.

I'll look into it. I haven't run into any issues, but I'll check the boards and see what's what.
EDIT: I changed the update rate, which may or may not help according to conflicting reports. Also enabled auto saving of the map.
I didn't know there was some actual chatter about Artemis on PA so I was pretty excited to run into this. I got to meet Thom at a game convection and play a 12 player sim with 2 ships (he had touch screens set which were awesome), but my friends and I now have a key for our crew if you need our ship. We're all pretty efficient at stations and working on our own 10 mission RPG-style campaign.
I just finished writing a guide to get X-Wing Series games running on Windows 7, so I figure this would fit in this thread: http://www.savingcontent.com/xwing

Wow, very nice. :^:
It's been a while since I played TIE Fighter. I think I'll dig out my disc and give this guide a try.
Edit: Dang, reading closer the guide is just for the DOS version, and I only have the Win95 disc. It might work, though. I haven't tried it under Windows 7 yet.

Read closer . The guide is for both the DOS and Windows versions of X-Wing and Tie Fighter plus XvT and XWA as well.

I wonder if I remembered to save a copy of my X-Wing disks on a hard drive somewhere.
I certainly don't have a floppy drive anymore, and I threw out my last floppies several years ago...
