Cool, thanks, not sure I'm ready for hard yet but I'll give it a whirl. I saw someone mention using mods, like bloat-ed but it doesn't look like you can select perks using mutilators in the games I've tried, so I think that may have been changed (?).
Remember that the shotgun pellets can go through specimens when you're using support specialist, so aiming into a crowd helps a lot
Doom2 and Arcade Gas Station are the 2 best maps to level up Support on. If you play your cards right, you can get in a million shotty damage in a map. Remember to unload on long lines of zeds as you shotgun pellets penetrate pretty deep.

But don't you also need to get welding points to level up? And there are no doors on Doom2.
Welding is a dumb req so you can skip wasting hours of your time looking at a door in game by creating your own listen server, and go support, kill all of the clots on the first level except one or two and get them to follow you to a door you can weld them behind. Then just tape/prop sometime on/etc your mouse button and go to bed. I assume this still works but I may be wrong.

While I think welding doors can be fun in games, I do agree it's a dumb requirement to level up. Most games I play through we never even bother to weld a single door.

I'm always welding myself some sort of choke point and trapping the door with a pipe bomb for when a huge crowd of shit eventually busts through.
There are a few really good maps for this.
Santa's Evil Lair has a hallway underground with a door at the end of a long corridor, Wyre has the top of the bunker with only a door and the stairs as entrances, and another hallway underground with a door next to some barred windows at the end of a hallway so a Pyro or Support can easily clear out behind the door, Biotic has a room where if you weld one door shut and man the other door the only entrances are that door and a hole in the ceiling behind you that can be watched by a single person, etc.
EDIT: oh, Offices too. Both the ground level and the roof have excellent choke points if you can keep a door welded shut.

You can just open the steam overlay while welding a door and it'll auto fire for you if you don't happen to have tape.
may as well use steam achievement manager if you're gonna do that, especially on Earth Day.
Yeah just use the manager and set your welding points to max and then just let your normal shotgun use level you up. Would be way more fun then grinding stuff.
Honestly if you are just gonna make a single player server and then solo grind it up you might as well just plug the numbers into the manager and go have fun playing.
MountainPass-Day is a horrid boring map. The waves are trivial due to the enemy stringing out over the huge distances and just get headshoted 500 feet away. Then the patriarch comes out and decimates because there is no cover.

DOOMed is my map of choice for solo grinding Demolitions.
There's a set spawn Chainsaw in one of the trucks in the little open center area you start off next to, so you can sell that and afford an M79 after the second wave at the absolute latest.

Start the first few rounds with a perk that makes money rapidly and doesn't use much, like berserker or field medic. Also, don't play on a difficulty higher than normal.

Looks like Doom2 is on list for maps where you can't improve perks. Went a couple rounds as a sharpshooters headshotting everything, didn't gain a single point. Went to another map, picked up headshots easily. Edit: unless there's a mutator or something that lets you gain points while playing on it, that is. I used to enjoy farming up a little damage there myself, and condensed as it is, it's definitely no cake walk on higher levels. Easy to get overrun.
A shame, sort of. I know some argue that if you're going to cheese the perks that you should just use whatever it is that people use to give themselves achievements and go full tilt, but I feel that 'farming' up some of the absurd numbers needed for this game isn't entirely unwarranted. I need like 1.7 million shotgun damage just to get to level 5, let alone the 2 million more needed to get 6, and all of my other perks are only level 2 and 3. While I doubt I'll max out all of them anytime this decade, being stuck working on some of them for literally days worth of time played is bullshit I abandoned along with my World of Warcraft subscription.
I guess as a midpoint I kind of wish they had more levels of the perks with perhaps a smaller upgrade at each of them, so rewards were granted more frequently, if at a reduced bump in effectiveness for each.

I don't think so, it's not in the map pack I downloaded for your server. Just went and got it on its own a bit ago to test it out.
It definitely used to work, but I suspect the people in charge felt it was a little too easy for official perk farming, or something.

Oh, ok, misunderstood what you were saying.
Honestly, I have no idea how they come up with the whitelist, a lot of the whitelisted maps are godawful and some of them are probably even easier for perk leveling than Doom2.
In DOOMed, to level Demo, usually I just sit in a truck and fire a grenade out the back whenever I see enemies milling about.
I was able to go from Demolitions 0 to 3 in no time flat doing that on Solo Hard.
Though I actually liked DOOMed as a map too, even if it is a little small. Surprised when I found that one wasn't on the server.

When I first started playing this game, way back on Dec 2009, I wanted to be a support specialist (Shotguns, whee!) But leveling was such a pain, even back then when you could use mutators to level. After getting a level 6 sharpshooter and commando, I'm still trying to get support on level 6.
The easiest perk, even after all the "tweaking" patches, is still Sharpshooter, being able to level up with the 9mm on clots, gorefasts, bloats, stalkers, crawlers and even sirens and husks beats any of the other perk requirements.
I used to play Commando, which was my first level 6 perk, until they lowered the SCAR's damage bonus; keeping that in mind and that a level 6 sharpshooter starts with a crossbow which can be sold for 600 (Used to go for 800, but on a tweaking patch they reduced the starting ammo) my commando has been gathering dust (Starts with an Ak which IIRC sells for 300-400).
But yeah, support is slow as hell, I would recommend sticking with the regular shotgun until you are able to carry both that shotgun and the double barrel one, as strong as the double barrel one is, the ammo is expensive and it is too slow to handle crowds.
On the other side, a level 5 Support Specialist can carry a shotgun an AA12, an m79 grenade launcher and 10 grenades, a walking tank.
I've gotten up to Support 4, which is high enough for a regular shotgun, an AA-12 and 1 block left over (for pipe bombs near end rounds, usually). My main problem with the AA-12 is that I struggle with balancing overwhelming firepower versus ammo supply. 100 rounds just doesn't feel like enough with the tight pattern it produces while facing larger crowds, but the regular shotgun also lacks the spread to help wipe 'em out en mass unless it's a fairly tight corridor.
Having both the regular and hunting shotgun to choose between gives a nice balance between longer range support and abrupt killing power for the tougher foes.
PS: even as someone who had 10 level 80's in WoW, I still flinched at the words "my first level 6 perk", emphasis on the word "first". :-P

Heh, yeah, I save the AA12 for Scrakes and Fleshpounds, unless that for some reason I need to run away and my shotgun is empty, I use the AA12 for regular specimens.
And I just have two level 6 perks.. For now. And hell, I managed to level Commando to level 6 before leveling Sharpshooter, with no cheats. I think I have medic and support on level 5, demolitions on level 4, berzerker and firebug on level 2. (I do have 196 hours logged on Steam, so go figure).

Just did a solo run on the server. Raccoon Airport map, and I was a measly lvl 4 Commando, but oh man, what a difference between level 3 and 4. Made it to wave 7, took out a fleshpound after an entire clip from the SCAR and a couple katana slices. What finally got me was a rush of 2 sirens, 2 husks, what seemed like a dozen clots and gorefasts. Good times.

Maddoc has commented in the past that the server is open to friends of ours freely (preferably not utter asshats of course), and that the password is present just to keep absolutely random people from swamping it constantly.
