I apologize for jumping in and out of the channel and disrupting things.

I know there's at least one lively discussion going on, but I only get about 20 seconds' worth of data, and then it's like the channel goes silent. That's what it looks like from where I'm sitting, anyway.

It's probably the usual trouble I've been having with my carrier. I might switch if they can't fix this garbage.

This seems like a lot of work. I finally made it to PAX this year and mostly I lurk on the forums. I thought the IRC chat would be cool. It's not a big deal. I don't really feel like jumping through hoops and grovelling for internet chat.

It's just the idea of having to vet yourself as not a spammer. IRC used to be so much cooler back in the day before the rampart crappery. It really was like that too. You could just join a channel and chat. I just don't feel like going through the hassle. It just feels too much like begging for internet friends. Don't worry about it. Go on with your internet lives. I'll go back to lurking. You know what? You can ban me even. I'd rather not be tempted to come back. You don't like my attitude and I don't like yours. You presume everyone is a troll and I presume you have your internet big boy pants on.

This is it. Especially since we've had to deal with a fairly persistent, proxy-loving spammer for a while now. It's a mild pain, yes, but a lot more pain is saved.

and considering you only have to do it once, then once its setup you can forget about it all... i don't see what the problem is.
You had to register for the forums as well...

Those of you who have such a problem with registering, why not just make your own room? Plus, you don't have to register to just lurk, if that's what you were intending on doing anyway.

I don't see what the big freakin deal is; it's not like you have to pass an elitist test before you can reg or anything, not like you have to pay money, not like you have to sell your soul to the establishment, geez. Not saying that you're claims are illegitimate or anything, but seriously, doing something that takes an extra 2 minutes shouldn't be making people so upset or angry.

Missing the point. Yes I did have to register for the forums. But after that I was free to post. I didn't have to ask for permission to post after registering. The way the IRC channel is set up, even after you have registered it doesn't matter. You are still not worthy of chatting. You then have to ask permission from one of two people to be able to chat in the channel. What is the point of that? You already passed the spam test by registering. But hey, what do I know? Maybe if I was a moderator I would get off on having to be messaged by newbs asking to get voice in the channel. Shyeah. Ok.

You didn't pass the anti-spam, system, though. Registering is easy; our spammer registers lots of nicks. In quick succession. Hence needing a filtering system.

The way I understand it, you were voiced 10s after the Op was informed. What's the issue?

Sorry dude, but you're being a straight up ass. Accusing the mods of 'getting off' on having to be messaged is a pretty outrageous accusation and extremely rude. By the way, registering to nickserv is only 1/2 the spam test for a reason. I'll lay it out for you so maybe you'll understand.

NickServ is specifically only for reserving a nickname for your personal use. It means that noone else can go around pretending to be you. It doesn't stop YOU from being a spammer. The person that we're talking about above is obviously registered with NickServ. But of course before moderation was turned on in the channel he could still join whenever he wanted and spam the channel full of pings and other stupid crap. Being added to the list means that we know you are from PA and are probably ok. If a person added to the list ends up not being OK, they can be removed from the list and will not be able to speak in the channel because they wont have +v (voice).

So, the only reason for the list is from a purely technical standpoint, not from any sense of power. I suggest you stop being an uber dick. Maybe it's because you didn't understand the technical reasons behind it, but a better way to have gone about it would be to ask why the list is necessary instead of spouting off insane accusations.

Registering is a server service, adding people to the access list is a channel service. People can't be added to the access list unless they are registered with the server.

What Worm said. There is no way to effectively blacklist a determined spammer, when they can just hop to a new proxy and register a new nick in seconds. Whitelisting is the only solution.

The issue is that IRC is not as welcoming as it used to be. Coming back and seeing how restrictive everything is just really turned me off to it. I said all along it's just my issue with it. It's not that big of a deal. If a spammer can cause a community to close itself up and then it is on the chat channel moderators backs to filter out the noise then the network is broken. Plus, who wants to sit around for ten minutes waiting to talk? Feels kinda lame really. So like I said. Back to your regularly scheduled internet. IRC isn't cool anymore. What is though?
