PC gamers to love Capcom in July (RE5, Bionic Commando, SFIV coming)
CAPCOM® PREPS A TRIPLE THREAT OF GAMING EXCELLENCE FOR WINDOWS®-BASED PERSONAL COMPUTERS
Resident Evil® 5, Street Fighter® IV and Bionic Commando® Coming to PC Starting This July
SAN MATEO, CA — May 1, 2009 -- Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that three of its blockbuster hit console games of 2009 will be coming to the PC beginning this summer. Bionic Commando®, Street Fighter® IV and Resident Evil® 5 will all be coming to the PC, beginning in July with Street Fighter IV and Bionic Commando, while Resident Evil 5 comes later in the year. All three games will be optimized for the PC platform and will have new PC-specific features added to the already great games. Street Fighter IV has been rated T for Teen by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), while Bionic Commando and Resident Evil 5 are both rated M for Mature. All three games will be available both at retail and via various digital distribution methods, including Capcom’s own e-store.
Street Fighter IV features a mix of returning favorites such as Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Guile along with new characters created for this game, such as Crimson Viper, Abel, El Fuerte, and Rufus. Characters and environments are rendered in stylized 3D, while the game is played in the classic Street Fighter® 2D perspective with additional 3D camera flourishes. Instantly familiar six-button controls are the hallmark of the game, with a host of new special moves and features. Mixing classic genre-defining game mechanics the franchise is known and loved for with all-new, never-before-seen gameplay systems, Street Fighter IV brings a brand new fighting experience to fans the world over. The PC version of Street Fighter IV will feature online play, higher screen resolutions and three new shaders based on three of the “artistic†trailers released in 2008 that will change the visual appearance of the game: “watercolor,†“posterization†and “sumi-e ink†styles.
The first true sequel to the classic 1988 Nintendo Entertainment System® original, Bionic Commando sees the return of the bionically-enhanced Nathan "Rad" Spencer. Time has not been kind to Spencer: 10 years after his heroic defeat of the Imperials, he has been betrayed by the government he swore to serve, imprisoned for crimes he didn't commit, and sentenced to death. Bionic Commando transposes the swing-and-shoot gameplay of the 8-bit original onto a stunning 3D environment of towering buildings, suspended roadways and monorails, deep canyons and sheer rock faces, where every environment is scalable using swinging, scaling, climbing and wall-walking techniques. The PC version of Bionic Commando will support higher resolutions than the console version, remappable controls including mouse and keyboard support, support for both DirectX®9 and DirectX® 10 and online connectivity for multiplayer sessions.
In Resident Evil 5, returning hero Chris Redfield is sent to Africa to investigate a biological weapon that is transforming the populace into aggressive and disturbing creatures. Joined by another local BSAA agent, Sheva Alomar, the two must work together to solve the truth behind the frightening turn of events. Featuring a revolutionary new co-op mode of gameplay, Resident Evil 5 will let players experience fear together as terror moves out of the shadows and into the light of day. The PC version of Resident Evil 5 will feature online play for co-operative play sessions over the internet and will also take advantage of NVIDIA®’s new GeForce® 3D Vision technology (wireless 3D Vision glasses sold separately).
Pretty cool shit in there especially if you can forkout the dough for the 3d glasses.
Very nice quicker then expected turnaround on Bionic Commando and RE5. I'll likely double dip on all 3 games to play with long distance friends who are PC gamers only.
Dont think so, the MT Framework engine does good by PC's and the Lost Planet port was very good and Devil May Cry 4's was fucking awesome with the extra stuff they added for PC's
And Bionic Commando is on Grins own engine and rearmed was excellent on PC so no worries there.
I have a feeling this will turn out good.
Capcom has been increasing its PC pressence a lot and getting better ports of their games over into my hands.
Looking forward to playing RE5 on my uber PC workstation with the 30" cinema display and 3D glasses.

I think the main question here is, mouse support? Because aside from that, the PC version was the best version of RE4 despite the basic awfulness of the port. Proof: There's a mod to let you keep Leon's leather jacket through the game, QED.

Well there's a whole bunch of groovy mods where you can do stuff like THE. TOUCH. OF. DEATH!
Anyway, with regards to RE4, Capcom farmed that out to an inexperienced 3rd party as their first major project. The group was disbanded soon afterwards.
In a recent interview they pretty much acknowledged that they royally screwed up with that port, and stated that their strategy is to do a good job of PC ports because that's the only way they're going to get sales. Capcom stated they're looking to make in-roads in the PC market now, it's also the reason they want to start moving stuff on to Steam
The best example that shows they're following up on these statements is the port of DMC4. It runs pretty much flawlessly (some people complain of no mouse control, but really, how would mouse control work in this game?), they made a specific timedemo for the PC version to help you calibrate your settings too. It even alt-tabs properly, something a lot of games fail on. Most importantly they added in two new modes that drastically take advantage of the additional processing power available on the PC.
In the console version they had to carefully manage the number of monsters on screen at any one time to prevent the game dipping below the 60 FPS they needed to maintain. For the PC version they made a new difficulty level called Legendary Dark Knight, which is a new mode that literally floods the screen with dozens and dozens of monsters simultaneously, allowing you to really wreck shop. It's awesome.
The other mode they added was Turbo mode, which speeds up the game by 20%. For the really hardcore players.
It's easily the definitive version now, no doubt about it.
With Street Fighter IV, they're actually introducing new optional shader styles. It's not a massive change, but it's pretty groovy that they're making the effort. Posted in the spoiler in case you want to have a look:
Two sets of pictures. Pictures in order are: Standard, Watercolour, Poster, and Sumi-e ink.
I've posted them as links so that you can put them in tabs to compare. Easier to see any differences that way.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to Bionic Commando the most, although I haven't heard any word on platform specific features. Even if it doesn't have any, it still looks like being an awesome game.
Anyway, I'm really pleased with this. I do own a 360, but I like to use it as little as possibly and primarily for local co-op and the arcade in the future.

Worried about Red ringing or something?
Yeah, a little. I'm also kind of bummed about backwards compatibillity in the future, because I think consoles beyond this generation won't even bother anymore.
If I'm going to buy a game and end up really enjoying it, unless your high tech, super-explodey consoles are still in pristine shape, it's much easier to play 10 years down the line on a PC, even if you have to emulate or run an old OS to do so.
Also, I'm in front of my PC much more often than my 360 already, so it's a little more convenient for me (especially at the moment, when I'm having some storage troubles and there are stacks of boxes preventing access to my 360).

I largely feel the same way when it comes to backwards compatibility. The ironic thing is that PC gaming is also steering in that direction for other reasons, mainly online verification. I mean, I've got so many games in my collection that simply wouldn't work today if I had to verify them online, just because the company no longer exists.
I thought that there wasn't going to be a PC version of RE5 at all, but it looks like I'm wrong.
Have they announced anything about online multiplayer in Bionic Commando on PC? I know they recently announced that Street Fighter IV uses Games for Windows Live, so I guess it might be the same with BC.

I'm guessing that as well. The fact that it'll be on XBL to begin with makes this more likely as well.
GFWL isn't bad, but it just doesn't have the community functionality of Steam yet. There isn't even an external client. And it has forced all-talk, which is freaking ridiculous. I do not want, nor need to hear an army of mouth breathers, masticators, and phone talkers during my playtime.

Xbox integration
Windows Live Messenger support was included in the Xbox 360 spring 2007 dashboard update released on May 9, 2007. Unofficially, it is known as "Windows Live Messenger 360."
Those using Windows Live Messenger are able to see the Gamertags of friends logged into Xbox Live, including the game they are playing. Xbox 360 users can chat in-game (or while watching a movie). Although only text chat is supported, Microsoft has suggested that voice and video chatting may come in a future update. Support for child accounts was added in December 2007.
I'd assume it works with GFW Live in the same way as it does with Xbox Live. I believe that you have in the past said that you wouldn't know as you don't use Windows Live Messenger.
I'd test it myself, but that's a bit hard without any GFW Live games.
Capcom already has another game with PC/360 cros-platform online play (Lost Planet: Colonies Edition), so maybe there was something about that that made them decide to not have any more.

I'm downloading now to test, but to be honest, their implementation is still wholly bizarre. Because a few months ago they released an external client for marketplace, which allows you to view DLC downloads, but nothing else. The sole account management option appears to be the ability to delete all Live profiles, so that's something. Why split the features across two separate clients?
EDIT: Just tried Live Messenger. It happily knows I've got e-mails on my hotmail account. It does NOT however know who my friends are on GFWL, or XBL for that matter, nor can I access my messages on GFWL. Ditto with the contacts list. Or if it does, I can't find them. If they ARE on there somewhere, can anyone tell me what I need to do?
I'm sorry, but I stick by my assessment. GFW Live is nowhere near what it should be in terms of functionality. Given that this is MS's own platform and they've had GFWL up and running for years now, I don't know what kind of excuse I'm supposed to swallow for the crappy support they've shown towards it. It would have much better chances if it did have it's own external, and all encompassing client, they have to know this by now. Maybe I'll change my tune if there is a way to access friends off of windows Live Messenger, but even then, the functionality needs to be so much more than just that.
XBL is a really awesome piece of work. I don't honestly believe they're really interested in GFW Live. They haven't implemented the most basic requested features, so far they've been trying to offer a clone of XBL but with less functionality. Ultimately, I can understand why as well. The money goes to the service that people are paying for, that's just natural. MS can't make money off of GFW Live subscriptions like it does with XBL, and it's telling that the first real functionality update was adding in Marketplace access. It's not their primary games business, that's the 360, so trying to expand the GFW Live userbase (and I'm talking beyond mandatory additions just to be able to play multiplayer because the games make use of the Live architecture) doesn't really matter much either. It's not like Valve are richer than Microsoft or have a better understanding of how to embed clients into Windows, it's just that Steam is their primary business, and they invest to get as many people using it as possible.

Somehow it not using the same contacts list doesn't surprise me. In the past I've experience having to enter the same information multiple times for different Microsoft services, even though I'm using the same Windows Live ID. I guess it's neccesary to add your Xbox/GFW Live friends again in Live Messenger.
Because Capcom is now building on a PC architecture when they make their games on the 360/PS3, so porting to the PC is easy.
It would be nice however, if I didn't keep having the coloured face buttons from the 360 controller flashing on the screen on my PC port. RE5's QTEs would be a bitch if it's not actually showing what you have the button hotkeyed to.
Edit: I should make it clear this is related to 360>PC ports in general. Even current stuff like Last Remnant is asking for right bumper entries in QTEs. I've not had any experience with a Capcom port outside of what I read about the RE4 one.
All of the recent Capcom ports have been really good, almost model ports to be honest. And RE4 wasn't even Capcom it was Ubisoft.
I have both RE5 and SFIV preordered so I'm pretty happy about this. Really hoping that Lost Planet 2 makes its way across too.
Was Lost Planet 1 any good?
Also, I'm interested in seeing more of Dark Void. Because being a Rocketeer is something we should all aspire to.
The game, or the port? If I recall from the time it was the first DX10 game, and also pretty wide ranged on options but did run a bit slowly (1680x1050 on an 8800). They definitely patched it a lot and then ended up bringing out Lost Planet: Colonies which had a bunch of extra modes, cross-platform play etc, but was incompatible with LP1.
Personally I thought the game was merely mediocre and worth skipping, but the promise of 4 player co-op has definitely convinced me that a sequel is a good idea.
Is the version of Lost Planet on Steam the complete version? I saw the same game in a B&M and it mentioned multi, didn't want to get burned with some sort of multiplayer only version.
Wow, and just as I'm looking to build myself a new PC. Awesome.
What are my arcade stick options? I'm not building one of those.
This is the burning question. Im using a Playstation 2 controller for Gametap fighters now, and it leaves much to be desired. Is there a pc controller with a nice d-pad on it? Maybe the Dreamcast d-pad is hoping for too much.
Also SFIV on PC reduces my urge to buy a PS3 even more...

Kind of.
The colonies version has extra content, but runs on seperate servers than the steam version.
The entire standard SP game and normal multiplayer modes are on the steam version, but no one plays the multi anymore. However, I'd imagine the same is true of the Colonies version, which I think even required servers hosted by capcom that may not even be around anymore.
Wow, and just as I'm looking to build myself a new PC. Awesome.

edit:the sumi-e ink shaders make everyone look like they are on acid or something very stimulating. Knowledge?
Its not that hard if you measure twice and cut once.
I never liked arcade sticks, unless i was standing in front of a cabinet. On top of that i have absolutely no wish to build my own. I dont even have a circular saw....i can pull the engine out of your car in my garage, but i cant do much at all with wood.

So is it true that SFIV PC is using GGPO code, or no chance?
Either way, me and my friend are ready and waiting.

I wonder if there will be a mod to get rid of all the borderline racism?
I wonder if there will be a mod to make the racism worse...nah, no one geek enough to do so would waste their time and bandwidth, would they?

edit:the sumi-e ink shaders make everyone look like they are on acid or something very stimulating.
Either way, me and my friend are ready and waiting.
I would guess it looks different in motion. Until we see it moving it's hard to tell how it looks.
I love a good arcade stick, but no way in hell am I building my own, and the Saturn pad is sublime anyway.
