Acutally I don't think it does. I'm pretty sure it edit's a local file and/or edits some data in memory so that when the steam service checks your stats it sees that you have the acheivements.

If this program actually 'hacked' anything server side I'm pretty sure steam would have started handing out the bans quick like.

    EDIT: Also, butts.

Well, they changed that now. It's all server side. I think that's what he was trying to get at. If you manage to somehow use an unlocker, then you would be hacking their servers.

Also, stop posting in this god damn thread.

Fuck, I'm posting in this god damn thread.

Fuck, I'm posting in this god damn thread.

When did they change that? I'm pretty sure the unlocker still works, It's just because all your achievements are kept in the cloud they can take them away and give them back at will. Like they did with the scout update.

Taking away people's weapons for a few days for using the unlocker is something I'm okay with. Anything more permanent or severe and I'm done with TF2.

If they really have altered the game so that you can't use the unlocker, I'm done with TF2. There is absolutely no way in hell you can convince me that forcing people to jump through tedious hoops to unlock items is in any way superior to just giving them the damn items. I have better things to do with my time than get on an achievement server and grind away or take even longer by doing things the "right" way.

They're going to be changing the unlock method anyway.

But what you're saying is still really stupid. Why would you quit TF2 because getting the new weapons is too hard? Does the game somehow become worse than it was yesterday when a patch comes out adding items that you don't have yet?

No, I'd quit because I'm not going to put up with arbitrary developer bullshit. I would actually rather pay a few bucks for the new items than spend hours banging my head against a wall to get them. I have nothing against the achievements themselves, but I have no interest in grinding to gain items in a game like TF2.

Why is it stupid for me to object to an arbitrary unlock system but not stupid to uphold it? Doesn't it make more sense to just give people the new weapons, put the achievements out there for people who want to bother with them, and just let everybody have fun? How about they give people who don't want to waste time with this unlocking items stupidity an option to just buy the unlocks for a dollar? It would make a helluva lot more sense than forcing people to use the current unlock system for no other reason than "just because".

Its not stupid to dislike the current unlock system, but threatening to quit over a free update is dumb.

What? I'm not threatening to quit over the update at all. As long as Valve doesn't screw with my ability to skip to actually enjoying the update, I'm fully appreciative of getting nice, new, free content. Letting people just unlock the items with a program lets players decide which way is more entertaining, so why bother changing it? Without the unlocker program, I would never have bought TF2. If I'll be locked out of future unlocks short of wasting hours of time, than my interest in TF2 would wane considerably.

Honestly, I just want to enjoy the game. If I'm distracted by wanting to get the new items, then I'm having less fun for no other reason than Valve has decided to make things that way. It just seems like a pointless waste of time.

I just want to have fun. Is that too much to ask, Valve?

They're taking out the unlock system anyway when they implement weapon drops.

See, I'm totally ok with that. Unlocks are dumb; getting a new, zany weapon because you killed a guy? Awesome. Much better system.

TF2 will have to go the way of Everquest and introduce classic servers, in which there isn't any of the content from the 30+ expansion packs.
