I wish you could pin a random folder to the taskbar and have it work with the jump lists and everything. Similar to a stack docket with Rocket/Object Dock.
How do I get my permissions to work on both my Windows 7 partition and my XP partition? I've already semi-borked my XP partition to get access to my data.
I am attempting to install Windows 7 RC on a very old Thinkpad (P3 1.13 Ghz, 384 MB of RAM, 30 GB hard drive). I'll tell you how it goes - it's just for fun.

I'm sure this gets asked a lot, but this is a large thread and tough to get through in one sitting. I'm in the middle of building a new PC and I'm waffling back and forth over going with XP or W7. I guess I'm most concerned about driver maturity and performance for games.
Can anyone offer some thoughts? Does it really depend on the state of drivers of my specific devices? If so, is there a good resource for finding out how well things may run before I do the install?
Right now, I'm leaning towards just going with XP, but I'd like to at least consider W7. I'm not interested in setting up a dual boot, since I want to get this going and just use it. Thanks for any help.
Try the RC first, and if it doesn't work, go with XP. Not like the RC costs money or anything.
That being said, if the drivers will work on Vista (same architecture), they'll work on W7.
MS has also been pretty good about adding new drivers to the... update... database? Whatever you wanna call it. I had two things that didn't work "out of the box," but inside a week their drivers had both been added to update and W7 was able to either automatically fix them for me or point me to a third-party link that had the exact driver I needed.

W7 uses the same driver model as Vista, so anything with a decent(ly supported) Vista driver will be fine. But yeah it really does depend on the driver support for your individual hardware chunks, which is one of the better reasons to go with known brands. OTOH, unless you have either truly ancient or truly dodgy kit, the only reason not to go with W7 would be lack of official MS support (for the free versions) - if something screws up, MS' response is likely to be along the lines of "oh, that's interesting, thank you for supplying your test data, we'll make sure that's fixed for retail, buhbye."

Well, this is all brand new kit, and nothing's from an esoteric brand. Motherboard is Gigabyte, video card is a Raedon 4850. I assume everything will have good Vista drivers.
The only other concern is the timed-nature of the RC, since I go into this knowing full well I'll have to do another system rebuild sometime before March.
Anyone experience audio issues, particularly relating the audio levels? I thought it might be the drivers (and it might still be), but I even went back to the same version drivers I was using in Vista when the issue was not present.
For example, TF2 or L4D will start out at a proper level, but if I go into their audio settings, the volume drops significantly until I restart the program.
WMP will start out at a proper level, but after about 3 minutes, the level will drop significantly until I tab back to the program. This continues to happen even after it resets to the proper level.

control panel -> sound -> communication tab -> choose "do nothing".

You know, I saw that option, figured it would probably interfere with something, but decided to leave it alone and then totally forgot about it.

So about a year ago I got rid of my headset and instead opted for a pair of really nice headphones and a monitor mounted microphone array. The microphone came with a USB sound card which gave me the ability to do some pretty neat things with the microphone which included noise cancellation and directional recording. I also think that the USB sound card is a better quality than what came integrated with my motherboard.
Anyway, today I tried installing the drivers in Windows 7. I installed the drivers and utilities off the CD and then plugged the sound card in. It was really buggy to say the least. After trying different versions of the drivers I uninstalled everything, took the sound card out, and then plugged it back in.
Windows 7 immediately recognized the device (right down to the brand name) and downloaded drivers for it that work perfectly. Now instead of using a third-party utility to control the sound enhancements (like noise cancellation) everything is integrated into the recording devices control panel in Windows.
It's fantastic. I love the driver support in 7.

The lack of a decent screen saver is starting to shit me off though.
I mean fuck they have had screen savers since windows 3.1 how hard is it to make one work?
I'm more annoyed that no one's bothered bringing back the Windows 9x Solitaire card decks. I miss the red robot deck!
But yeah, some of the Vista/7 screensavers are a bit eh - Bubbles is the one I see people (and stores) use the most, and it's the one I like the least. Aurora's nice, though. It's a pity (and a questionable decision) that the settings can only be accessed through the registry.

What do you mean? You don't like any of the screensavers that come with the OS?
No, the problem is that 70% of the time they fuckup my computer.
If the computer goes into deep sleep mode it often wont come out of sleep most.
And when you turn off sleep mode and just have it power off the monitor it will turn it on with your background up and everything but it wont let you right click or access the task bar!
I do love this OS. Its running so smooth, using bugger all memory. And glad to see Windows putting sensible things in, like native DivX support, PNG exporting in snipper, the Snipper, gadgets and damned good driver support.
I mean, i plugged in my edimax usb wireless adapter, Vista had a bit of a session getting it working. 7 loved it, it hugged it, it invited the device inside for a party.
I honestly don't think I've even used a screen saver since like, 1997. First thing I do is turn it off, and set my monitor to turn off after 20 min. screensavers might be pretty to look at, but there's no point when my monitor could just be off and not using power.
I can't install some drivers because it says I need SP1 even though other people can get them to work with win7, whats wrong? Also how do I get the transparent bars again?
First of all, which drivers are you trying to install? Second, I assume "transparent bars" is Aero. You'll get that back when graphics drivers are installed properly.

I got it, I don't want to explain why it didn't work before...it is embarassing.
Windows 7 was taking around three minutes to boot on a machine that was booting XP in under one minute. (That's not counting the BIOS POST stuff of course.)
Disabling the Windows Search service improved my boot times by about 60 seconds.
I did notice that Services reported it as a Delayed Start... so maybe it wasn't actually taking 60s to boot, but it was just sitting around waiting for the timer.
Anyway, I just wanted to throw that out there.

Eh, it was only $40. I got it from the company store. So I can't sell it either. Perhaps skeet shooting when 7 comes out???
