Dim computer monitor

I have a ViewSonic vx2835wm monitor. It looks alright on the desktop, but when I run videos through MediaCenter on it they are very dark. Using VLC it looks good when I crank up the brightness, but as this is in the living room and being used as a TV/media center, I'd like to use MediaCenter. Is there a setting somewhere to crank up its brightness similar to VLC? Or is there another codec that I could install that would give me those controls?

you can mess with the desktop settings to adjust the permanent gamma. or at least in my version of mediacenter (vista) there was a place under settings to adjust the brightness just in that app.

if the monitor has suddenly gotten a lot dimmer, it's either the backlight bulbs are dying or the controller board for those lights is dying.

one is relatively easy to fix the other isn't.

    Monitors go dim over time.

I take it you've turned up the monitor's brightness already so try turning up the color temperature.

LCDs have a semi-notoriously bad habit of dimming much faster than CRT too. In my experience.
