In the past i've had my hair cut by people I know without really having to say anything more than "Just like it was last time" but now I find myself in need of a hair cut without this advantage and can't find anything on the web about how to go about it so H/A i ask you this.
What do you have to say to get a correct haircut? Is there a nomenclature that must be used?
When I want a particular style I try to avoid the hairdresser vernacular, because I think I'd just end up sounding like my grandmother at a computer shop asking for a "machine with extra anti-trojan terabits".
From what I can tell, the best way to communicate what you're hoping for is to find reference images off the internet, print them out, and bring them to your barber/barberette. Even if you have to say "I like this part of picture X and this part of picture Y", it is much easier than you trying to visualize something in your imagination and describe it to them in a way they can't evaluate as readily with their knowledge of techniques.
Theres kind of a lot of pictures out there. General advice for hair and clothing is to look at famous people whom you look like. They pay a lot of money for image consultations and professional dressers, so steal some of their ideas.

Yeah, do that. At first I felt like a bit of an ass bringing in celebrity photos (I didn't want to project an attitude of "I can look just like a star!") but it really is a wide library of very professional styles to choose from, and that you probably are already familiar with by watching TV or movies. Of course, make sure the styles you choose can be done with the length of hair you have.
If that doesn't give you anywhere to start, though, just do a google image search for "men's short styles" or "men's medium styles" and it should lead you to assorted galleries you can peruse.

To be fair to your grandmother, very few machines come standard with sufficient anti-trojan terabits.
OP: If you can find a picture ahead of time that's probably ideal, but unless I'm mistaken, most places will have books with nothing but pictures of haircuts for you to look through.

Granted, depending on what you want done, it may be really fucking simple.
