360 resets when I change video modes

My 360 is hooked into HDMI 2. If I change to TV or HDMI 1 the 360 remains on. However, upon returning to HDMI 2 to play it, the 360 restarts.

I've got the video hooked up with HDMI and the audio hooked to the receiver via optical.

TV is a Panasonic Viera 50" Plasma

Any ideas? I'm hoping I'm just missing a setting somewhere.

Are you using both an HDMI cable and an Xbox AV cable, with the plastic housing on the AV cable cracked open to make room for the HDMI plug? If so, this is a known problem with that hack. Basically, when you switch inputs you're confusing your 360 such that it ends up thinking you're using component video, because a full AV block is connected and the little toggle switch is set to HD. It's probably related to HDMI handshaking, but I have no idea why it comes up with input switching but not when you start up the console cold.

What happens if you flip the toggle switch from HD to SD? I'm speculating that that might cause your 360 not to "see" a phantom component connection, and thus hopefully it won't spontaneously reboot when you switch inputs on your TV. I'm assuming here that you can still get optical audio in SD mode.

If that doesn't work, you have three choices. You can avoid the problem by not switching inputs when using the 360. You can buy the official optical out adapter. Or you can try further hacking your AV cable to ensure only the optical pins are connected, or perhaps just ensure there is no connection on pins 20 and 24 ("use VGA" and "use component"):

That last option is entirely at your own risk, by the way, I'm only speculating that it would be possible to hack the original AV cable to provide just optical out without any of these HDMI handshake related reboot issues.

I am using a cracked cable but it is a VGA cable that I've cracked so it doesn't have the HD/SD switch. I will probably have to get an official adapter.

It's not a major issue, just a nuisance.
