The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
basically, I liked the slowness of parts of these songs (though speed is just as great) and use of "Eastern" elements like in the Gojira one. I liked the guy in Neurosis' vocals the best, but it's more important that the music be great than the vocals.
I'm liking all of these; I'll check all of them out. I realize now though, that the major appeal of those first three there was how dark the music is without being sentimental at all.
These still hit really close to what I want though, so thanks.
Woo! I love discovering that other people like the same type of music as me.
I'm sure you're aware, but Mastodon's new album Crack the Skye is probably also up your alley. It's a bit less sludge than stuff like Neurosis, but it's pretty clear they were influenced by them. It's a bit more mainstream than anything mentioned here, but it might be something you dig.
You would like Fear Before (formally known as Fear Before the March of Flames), based soley on your singer preferences. Has the same "feel" to it I think.
Here's is some funeral doom metal by a Danish guy called Nortt:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF_7QQFjwyQ
It's slow, very ambient, hard and pretentious as only a solo project by a small town morbid misanthrope can be, but give it a listen through or two to see it's something for you. Here's a link to some downloadable mp3s if you want: http://nortt.dk/index.php/715051
Now, here's Cromlech, because every man alive should listen to Cromlech at least once:
I frequent a lot of threads like this on other forums and I never see anyone bring up the funeral doom band called "Funeral." Does anyone else like them? I've got two of their albums, and one in particular, "From These Wounds," is excellent. Anyone ever hear it?
The sound quality on that second clip is pretty bad but it's the best I can find.
PS: I read somewhere that Funeral was named the "most depressing band ever" by some European magazine.

If you like them, I would highly recommend Cult of Luna as well.

Mastodon seems more melodic than what I'm looking for here, but they also seem cool in other ways, so I will check them out as well.

This band called Darkane might be too heavy, but I enjoy them:

I also second the Mastodon suggestion. I've been listening to their new album non stop since its release, it's top-notch.
