[solved] Computer help - mobo or vid card is fried

GeForce 7600 GS Video card
Asus A8N5X motherboard
Windows XP

A few days ago, after several hours of gaming, my monitor lost signal from the computer while I was logging out. It was time for lunch anyway, so I shut down the rest of the way, and things were normal when I rebooted later.

Yesterday, after <hr of gaming, same story, the monitor lost signal, but audio responses were still happening, so I shut down "blind" and restarted again - this time, after the mobo and OS startup screens, when Windows finished loading, the monitor declared it had lost signal and went into sleep mode.

To rule out a legion of dust bunnies lodged somewhere important and causing overheating, I unplugged, cracked the case and used a can of air and the vacuum to clean things out. It was dusty, but it wasn't awful.

Restarted again, went into settings first (turned on the alarms) and then Safe Mode. Video in Safe Mode was fine (for Safe Mode). There was nothing that I recognized in the logs to indicate a hardware failure, and the video card drivers were declared up to date when I checked them. AVG Virus scan was clean.

I uninstalled the video drivers to rule out corruption, restarted and the computer declared that it had new hardware (duh) but couldn't complete the installation process. I downloaded the video drivers manually, and started the video settings config process. The monitor would occasionally flicker, and when I turned up the resolution it froze with the background screen on top.

Restarting this morning gave me a CPU Fan Speed warning (too low), and after mobo and OS load screens, it loaded the desktop background, made all it's routine startup noises, and then quit - the desktop icons and start menu bar didn't load.

I would not be surprised if the video card is fried - it's a bit more than 3 years old, and while I have a decent surge protector, Alabama has some pretty impressive lightning storms. Im thinking it's more vid card than mobo or even monitor because Safe Mode isn't a problem.

Thoughts? I'm open to replacing components or even the whole thing, just wanted a second opinion.

It is probably a video card problem. Mobos dying will make weird noises on POST.

    What are the POST beeps?

and I wonder about my neighbors even though I don't have them
but they're listening to every word I say

Nothing unusual during POST, system noises are fine even with the side panel off.

Then I would rule out mobo. They tend to make an awful BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEE
    EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppppppppppp

    when they die.

Video card is most likely shot.

Replace your DVI/VGA cable though, as that may be heading to the wayside.

Happiness - replacing the video card fixed the problem. I am keeping an eye on the DVI/VGA cable, however.

    Thanks to all!
