adding another recommendation for Shiren DS. there is no better roguelike for the system, IMO, and it's considered by many to be finest Eastern roguelike. it's an immensely rewarding game.

I just noticed on Ebay while looking at Front Mission there's another one on the DS with a completely different cover. Is that a new one or just different art on the front?

Edit: It was a import from Japan. Do they have two out there at the moment?

yeah, they have two out in japan. the second is a port of a mobile game.

FFTA2:GOTR (yikes) Was pretty but felt really limiting after playing Disgaea. The terrible "Learn skills by equipping items for a long time" system returns, and battle areas feel tiny.
It's also the easiest game ever made. And the easiest game that ever will be made. By anyone. Ever.
This is what bored me to tears in the first game. I think the only times I ever died in the first game was when I forgot to check the law for the day, and it was like "no magic" and I'd bring like one physical attacker to the battle.

I'm not looking for the difficulty of playing a grandmaster in chess, but at the very minimum, I should die a few times so that I can adjust my strategy.

Disgaea is great and should fill the need for both strategy and rpg.
Disgaea is a fun hundred hours (and more!) if you get off on building an unstoppable demigod capable of crushing all challengers beneath him. No shame in that. But, past the first few chapters, a strategy game it is not, unless you were to generously consider clearing geopanels strategy - it's more of a puzzle minigame.

Maybe this would have been a better critique of why Disgaea really doesn't fit the bill of what I was looking for in the OP. Its more like a single player grind for bigger and shinier things than a strategy game. And again, I played the heck out of both 1 and 2 (over 100 hours on each iirc).

@Akira: The customization would be a big thing for me if I got Front Mission. From what I heard from a few sources, I think I'm gonna put Front Mission on the backburner for buying currently.
