Hmm, is it possible to build a trade depot out of wood? And if so, does it offend the elves? Do they not bother to come? Maybe I should do that from now on.
if the elves had anything decent I'd just kill their caravans and seize their goods.
Only reason I even trade with them is to stock up on stuff like cloth and leather, because I never have those industries and want the goods on hand in case a dwarf gets moody.
Oh no, I hear elf sieges are piddly. Currently, their soldiers are armed with wooden equipment, and apart from mounting unicorns and starting out stealthed, they aren't very tough.

Holy shit it takes a long time to up armor/shield user, huh?
I've got wrestlers approaching legendary in wrestling from sparring who are just now starting to hit novice in the armor skills.
Is there a drawback I'm not seeing to training all military dwarves to legendary+ status in wrestling before having them start sparring with weapons?
When you up wrestling, you up their ability to dodge incoming hits. That's the huge benefit in upping wrestling. I don't know what upping armor does, maybe make it more effective?
Armor Training reduces the the encumbrance penalty your dwarves receive from armor. Plate Armor can get pretty heavy, so this a nice skill. This and Wrestling are the main reasons to cross-train your marksdwarves, and the reason why many make their braindamaged dwarves marksmen. For some reason, it trains really slowly. I'm assuming this is because Wrestling trains very quickly, while a dwarf only gets Armor Using experience from being hit.
Shield User increases your dwarves ability to block attacks. According to the wiki, a Legendary Shield User may even deflect Dragonfire.

Unleash the dogs.

and watch the elves sob as they are mauled
I hear in future versions they'll use magic. Y'know, the kind of magic where your fortress is destroyed by walking trees...
I've added the ability to specify in the world gen params the number of sky z-levels, the number of z-levels minimum between each layer (it'll often be more because of elevation changes), and the number of extra z-levels down at the bottom. It doesn't yet allow dynamic resizing but this should be enough for the requests I've heard about.
Do you guys tend to build mostly on one level, or equally across multiple Z-levels? Do you build towers (usually)?
Do you group workshops together with other workshops, or with stockpiles? Do you dump your refuse, or use the bones to make things (crafts, bolts)? How big are your dwarf apartments?
I tend to always do things in a very set pattern and I imagine others do the same. I build across multiple Z-levels to spread out my fortress downward - first level is food storage and gathering areas, -1 is workshops and stockpiles, -2 is apartments, -3 is noble housing, -4 is barracks, etc. I also build towers to house trade goods because I can position the tower directly over the depot and it makes transport fast.
Just wondering how other people do it.

I usually build my housing and barracks on the first z-level. Then my workshops along a hallway on a z-level lower, with all the stockpiles on that level as well - right next to the workshops.
It all depends on what the environment looks like for me though.
Elves came to trade.
Elves unloaded trade goods at trade depot.
I decided on a better location for trade depot.
I ordered the trade depot deconstructed.
Elf trade goods fall on ground.
Dwarfs stampede in effort to claim "unwanted" items just lying about on ground.
Everyone is happy.

Oh, except maybe the elves. Think they'll be pissed?
I think this has got to be the lamest artifact I've ever created.
Udeshtishis, "Skinspiraled", a Chert mug worth $2400. On the item is an image of a fly in Chert.
Yeah. Good. Wow. Nifty.
I think that's even less exciting than the shirts our tailor is making that say, "I went to Sákrithubas Fokáshshedimziril ùk and all I got was this lousy shirt."

Okay I want to know why you can't deconstruct your wagon and dump those items when you start a fort

On October 11, 2009 another player experienced a similar artifact named Broiledprinces. It is currently believed that such an artifact is triggered by having a dwarf claim an above-ground workshop while the dwarves are all ordered inside via the orders menu. The feat has since been repeated.
I always get caught out by how fast the monsters move.
Usually with a siege I got time to get everyone inside.
But with a monster I'll be half way through securing the fortress and jesus christ fire everywhere
EDIT: Blurbl that would be great. I wouldnt mind it if it had an option where instead of going through world gen, it just created a map full of metal ores, waterfalls and magma

No. Bad elf. You get a Dungeon Master/trapper to tame those cave crocodiles and gift a few to your filthy tree hugging kin in the hopes that they sell you a breeding pair of giant eagles next year.
Actually, I nearly had a planepacked. Because the bug is caused by ordering dwarves inside when one is gathering stone for an artifact, a stonecrafter had gathered about ten stones by the time I allowed the dwarves back outside.

Oh I get it, so they are stuck inside and the guy who is in the strange mood for some reason "stacks" more materials he wants every few minutes?

my mind ... it is blown
although it kind of makes me sad that apparently, 9 days ago a similar item was created.
That is super epic. All it needs is magma.
But at least it has trees, so you can get some metalworks in.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck
do any of the visualizers let you play the game in 3D yet?
... you can? You just deconstruct the wagon just like you would any other workshop. You get three logs out of it, too.
Unless I'm not understanding the question ...

cage traps.
with wooden cages
I cant beleive I lost my fortress with a captured dragon. I was in the middle of creating a dragon fire pill box as well
I have traps all over the entrance area to my fortress and managed to lure him through a trapped tunnel.
He destroyed a diorite floodgate to get in that tunnel, too. I nearly shit myself.

dumping the items afterward is what my dwarves avoid doing
You mean you want to get rid of your starting supplies? Designate the stack of items as dumpable and make a garbage disposal zone for them to use.
Then messages that the hatchlings have become adults.
Then more giving birth spam.
Going back through my history I estimate there are over 30 breeding Cave Crocodiles somewhere.
I have no idea where they are.
This is either going to result in my dwarves all pimped out in crocodile leather clothing or a bunch of overweight crocodiles
Oh I get it, so they are stuck inside and the guy who is in the strange mood for some reason "stacks" more materials he wants every few minutes?
