I'm surprised. Seriously, I never expected development on this game to end be it cancellation or retail release. They've been working on DNF for over half my life. It's a damn fixture now!
Don't take it away from meeeee.
This is exactly how I feel.
It's like hearing that an old friend died. An old friend who loved beer, titty jokes, and guns.

And always said he'd come 'round to play Mario Kart or that he'd meet you on X-Box Live, but never did.
This is the most awesome ending to the most infamous vaporware story ever. Now all they gotta do is admit they were bullshitting the entire time and the best practical joke in gaming history will be complete.

I just realized.
BC3KAD was less vapor than DN3D. Of course, the way it was released it was nigh-unplayable, but it still made it, and it got heavily patched afterwards.

Man...Since I was like, seven years old, it's always just been that Duke Nukem Forever is being made and will one day be finished. This is like if I believed in God and someone proved beyond all doubt that no God ever existed.

Man, I don't even have the heart to post the giant list of "stuff that has been released in the time that DNF has been in development.
Especially since that list was like four years out of date.
Because it's obligatory, here's the list. That was last updated in December of '07 though.
Some gems:
In April of 1997, Google, eBay, and the term "weblog" didn't exist.
Every GeForce and Radeon graphics card.
The DVD format was finalzed and the DVD forum agreed on the HD-DVD format.
The entire Harry Potter series as well as five movies.
The two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity were proposed, authorized, announced, designed, launched and successfully landed upon Mars where they have been exploring the surface for over 2.5 years.
There have been five Olympic Games (three winter, two summer). The International Space Station was assembled and has been orbiting Earth for over 8 years.
Remember how we were supposed to get the HL2 episodes at least once a year? Yeah.

This is particularly sad for me. The 3drealms forum was the first forum I ever registered on for the internet and I've been there over 10 years now. It's really disappointing to see that game is never going to make the light of day, but there is only so many times you can keep redoing something over and over before someone says that enough is enough.
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

Man, I just figured they would keep working on it for forever, ya know? Sorta like how you never really think about dieing, you just sorta assume you'll always have time for doing things and next thing ya know your brother or best friend dies and you start thinking about how everyone (even Duke Nukem, apparently) is mortal.
Now we'll never find out if Duke Nukem Forever was worth 13 years of blood, sweat, and toil. I'm a sad panda now. It's like a part of my childhood has died.
Just as Star Trek gets released too. With the resurrection of one dead franchise, another passes into the ashes of history. What are the odds that some other dev team like Raven or Epic just buys up the property and spits out a Duke game in a year's time? I'd find that quite amusing. Kind of a "That's how shit gets done, folks!" statement. There's always been a strong pro-stripper demographic out there that hasn't been properly catered to in about 13 years.
Ya know something? This news is probably as shocking as it seems because... they've been at it for so long. I think if they had given up the ghost after 4 or 5 years and just canceled the game, nobody would have batted an eye. But to keep at the damn thing for over a dozen years was uh, a sort of ridiculous perseverance in the face of... laziness, engine changes, and procrastination that everybody just thought they had to finish sometime, they'd gone too far to go back. And they sorta kinda seemed to be close to finishing the game. There were some vague promos going around in 08 so it seemed more likely then before. Not quite a demo or a playtime vid, but... there *was* something there. It was enough to keep hope alive, darn it.
Rest in peace dear friend. No gaming joke will ever surpass the glory that was Duke Nukem Forever.

Speak for yourself. I sulk all the time about how I'll literally never be able to play all the games, watch all the movies, read all the books, etc. that I want to.
I guess now that DNF is literally never going to come out we as a community can continue to assume it would have been the best thing ever for the rest of all time. Maybe that was their fucking plan all along.

I'd like to know what the devs were doing for the last twelve years. More, though, I'd love to know who was giving them money for the last twelve years, and what kind of meetings they were having past the decade mark or thereabouts. Whoever was able to get investors to keep pumping regular infusions of cash into an obviously stillborn game over ten years after work began on it (and remember, game studios are not cheap to run) should be able to write his or her ticket as a sales rep for just about any company on this planet.

BWAHAHA.
To spend several more years of development, then starcraft:ghost it? Come on Blizzard, keep the joke alive!
Not surprised at all to be honest, but I'll be darned if it didn't creep out of the shadowy left field. Ah well, them's the breaks so they say.
Man, you are making me tear up.
Nintendo could give it to intelligent systems.
Will be released, according to Valve, 'soon'.

I know they went from the Quake 2 Engine, to Unreal, to Unreal 2 to something like Doom 3 engine and then to Unreal 3 (or something like this).
They apparently scrapped and remade the entire game multiple times on different engines. I think that is where the problem may have started.
