No, see, that'd be true if it had gone on for five, maybe six years.

But 12 years? DNF being in development was a fact of life. It was one of the few constants in our ever-changing world. Hell, it was so stable a fact that you could have based philosophical schools of thought on the universal truth that Duke Nukem Forever would always be in development.

It's like if the sky suddenly turned rainbow colored, or entropy spontaneously reversing itself.

It's the end of an era of making jokes about these guys.

At least now some employees can maybe speak up and give us the dirt on what the fuck ganja weed they've been smoking over there all these years.

I have a theory that I think should be watched. We are now about 3 years away from the end of the world in 2012, right? So, DNF gets passed on to another developer, right? And it kills them too. But its closer to release. So it gets passed to another dev team, and destroys them. Each time it gets closer and closer to release and destroys all known companies, except for EA.

EA then picks up the title in 2012, shoves it on to shelves...and its so beautiful and wonderful that it kills the entire world like in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

After passing hands so many times, I'd be more inclined to say that the world would be destroyed on account of the pure shittiness.

nah, I think 2-3 years ago he said that gamestop didnt even exist anymore.

He could go to any Gamestop and have it honored, I'm sure. He has the receipt, and the original store is closed. It would also get a huge laugh from the staff.

They changed their system years ago and all old preorders were canceled.

Actually, no. The pre-orders were not canceled, they were transfered to the new system. All of the old pre-orders that were for titles no longer in the system were destroyed by district managers. However, something like this is a bit different. Once the DM is involved, it'll be taken care of. Also, it's five bucks.. they'll take care of it, particularly since he has the receipt.

    http://www.gamespot.com/features/btg-daikatana/index.html

As a software designer it strikes me that (most) of the gaming industry hasn't figured out what the majority of the programming world has. Granted there is more to making a game then programming, but there are books written on the process behind this shit. You don't just throw spaghetti against a wall and hope for the best. Whether it is setting reasonable deadlines or planning out the scope for a project, the gaming industry is filled with gross incompetence in the area of project management. Probably because it has historical not been thought of as a grown up industry so few people treat projects like they would in the rest of the software world.

At least a few companies get it right. Valve being one of them, no coincidence that they were started by two Microsoft veterans. Say what you want about Microsoft, but they at least have a process for planning/completing projects.

Valve releases games like every 3 years. Most companies can't do that.

I still love Romero's whole "Design unfettered by technology!" shtick from that time period. Quite simply, even today with the second decade of the 21st century around the corner, there are still very hard limits to the technology available to developers (nevermind what a developer can reasonably create in a set period of time). Console makers try to accommodate, but at the end of the day a processor is only capable of x functions over x period of time, and your design must take that into account. You have to be willing to restrict your design to what is possible, and maybe file away some of the crazier ideas for the future.

This of course says nothing about Romero's narcissism -
"At id we were making tons of money but working in a pretty small space," he says. "That didn't make sense to me. I'd be sitting at id and just couldn't understand why we were working in really low-key offices with white walls. You know, why not celebrate your success a little?"

    - but that's really a different subject.

Especially if the previously quoted 3DR employee is correct, it seems that 3DR had a similar problem. You had upper management guys who had a vision for what the game was supposed to be, and then when new technology rolled along, they had to go for it because it'd "unfetter their design" even better. At the end of the day, you simply have to place your cards on the table, though. You have to choose a technological avenue and finish a product. Vision is good, design is good - but you must be aware of what technology allows you to do.

It is funny that 3DRealms had to fold in order to get this game out. I wonder how much the license is worth? I can see a number of developers that would want to get a hold of it.

Games grew beyond heroes like Duke years ago. Coming out with a Duke game now just seems backwards, like Apple making another iMac or Bill Gates going back to building circuit boards in his oven.

Even Gears is more mature and layered than Duke Nukem. I think some of you fail to realize just how 90's the Duke is.

Who says I want every game to be matured and layered. An FPS with strippers and crude humor and jokes? YES PLEASE!

Rather have that than some damn game about some war trying to be more than it is.
