Getting started with freelancing on the side:

Inspired by the 'How Much Do I Charge' thread...

So I've been working in Network Security for about 2.5 years as a student programmer, and have an internship lined up over the summer. Since Security is kind of a niche thing and not as popular as development, I'd like to get some experience with development on my resume.

I've become pretty proficient with Ruby on Rails working on internal tools for our team, and I'm more than confident in my ability to deliver. Now, how do I get started?

Sites like odesk.com seem to cater to outsourced people, craigslist is full of 'I WANT X WEBSITE COPIED,' and the local classifieds are basically just postings for full time jobs.

Is the idea of taking on some development work on the side totally insane? If not, how do I get started getting leads?

Keep business cards handy. You never know when you'll find someone at the line at the supermarket that is in need of your services. Also, get them designed by a profesional.

You're as good as the media you use to promote yourself.
