[Game On] Red Orchestra (Steam)

Captain KCaptain K Registered User regular
edited April 2008 in Games and Technology

What is Red Orchestra?

Red Orchestra is a "realistic WW2 first-person shooter". It was originally a UT2K3 mod created for the Make Something Unreal contest. The guys behind the mod won the contest, and they used their winnings and licensed game engine to recreate the mod as a standalone release, which is available now on Steam as Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45.

Yet another WW2 FPS, you say? Not so! RO is about the oft-neglected Eastern Front. Germans or Russians, no Americans to be seen.

It's also quite unlike Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and other WW2 FPS games in that it tends far more toward realism. There's no health packs, one bullet is usually enough to kill, and falling from any significant distance will usually result in death (or at least "my legs is broke" syndrome). One more thing: no crosshairs. Use iron sights, or spray and pray from the hip.

Here's some media to get your attention:

a trailer

some weird french video

some dude telling you how to play the game with a weird accent

good servers we know of

63.211.111.43:7757 -- 32 players, 24/7 Danzig (a great map). no bots, and tons of good and very polite players here
63.211.105.109:7757 -- 20 players, Infantry and Combined Arms map rotation. has bots but still a decent server.

I bet if you explain exactly what Red Orchestra is in the OP, you'll get way more people interested. Because I'm betting most people that know what it is already have it. And those of use that don't know really can't get excited unless someone tells us what it is.

You are too late Captain K. I am already so hyped I preloaded two days ago.

I never got to play Red Orchestra. Many other games demanded my attention. But this weekend I guarantee I will give it a thorough analysis.

It seems like Red Orchestra always comes up during finals for me.

That said, I look forward to looking down the sights and seeing K's and everyone else's dirty Russian/German faces right in the middle of my crosshairs.

    It's the RO way!

Edit: And yeah, everyone should try to preload it too, if you have the time and bandwidth. It's totally worth it, and you'll want to jump in as soon as you can. One thing I hate the most about steam (which is really my fault) is that I'll get ready to play a game only to realize I uninstalled it for some inane reason.

I wasn't going to take advantage, but since there's going to be a PA Game on, fuck it. I'm going to be upset after the trial though, I don't like it when games are taken away from me. :)

    Buy it

It's a really fun game that I load up every now and again even when the PA guys aren't playing. Plus, when you get all of us together, it becomes super-fantastic fun.

Hey, I almost failed chemistry when it was first released last year! I'm walking a thin line again this year.

Sack up, soldier! You might as well preload it to give it a chance. Can't beat trying it while it's free, even if it's only for an hour or two.

My computer just shut itself off while trying to preload. I think I'll hold off on opening Steam until I'm done with my CS final (which is only present on my computer.)

I really enjoy the game but I always hate how I'll die and then find myself miles away from my friendlies, or at least from the people I want to play with. And trekking across the map to fight alongside them again is near impossible given the mortality rate and lack of mini map. (Not that I'm saying the game should have a mini map or radar, that's counter to the spirit of the game). But I often feel really very isolated and cut off. Which, I suppose could happen and does happen in the middle of a large scale altercation between forces where a soldier gets cut off from his squad. Anyway, It's late and I guess what I'm saying is I enjoy the spirit and team oriented gameplay of CS:S and the squad cohesion BF2 games more than this, while I still believe this game has quite a bit of merit.

That was the joke! Way to ruin it, loser!

I just tested the game, and it runs well, but I don't remember anything about it. All the keys and everything, and map objectives. I do remember I like the smaller close combat maps as opposed to the wide open maps, though.

This game was always one of those 'meh, it would be nice to have it. But it's just another WW2 FPS.' Then I watched that trailer.

    I WANT THIS GAME! :x

But it won't work on my computer :( .

I have yet to play with anyone in any online game from G&T ever, so I'll try to get in on this but not sure how likely it'll be. My exams are over tomorrow, but things'll still be busy. Going to try hard though, maybe I can even get Ventrilo to work properly on this computer back home.

Updated the OP with a couple of good servers I've found since picking the game up again. The 24/7 Danzig server is by far the best one we've found (hi5 bombardier), the players there are very polite and team-oriented.

I've been playing RO and its previous mod version for nearly 3 years now, so I'm terribly biased, but I would encourage everyone to give RO a try for at least four or five good rounds before coming to any firm decision about its quality. The learning curve can be very steep, there will probably be a large portion of maps you won't like(there is a lot of diversity between them), the server your on makes a huge difference, and your weapon selection changes the game a great deal.

If your tastes demand more arcade-ish-ness, you're welcome to join the CiA/CoR server on weeknights EST time, where we frequently enjoy organized bayonet wars and our resident computer science major treats us to such abominations of game-code as this:

Danzig was a blast last night. Those close-quarter maps are what make the game fun for me. The large, wide-open tank maps aren't my cup of tea as I constantly get sniped out in the open.
