As someone living in Japan, with access to game stores that sell used Dreamcast games, could anyone offer some recommendations as to what's available for the DC and which of it is awesome? The first two games were for Saturn, but were ported to Dreamcast, right? I found one selling Sakura Taisen Online, which seemed to be a mahjong game? I'm sure the mahjong action is great and everything, but I'm pretty sure I'll be avoiding that one.

Offhand, there's Ikaruga and Rez. The US DC was pretty fortunate. We got a lot of awesome niche games released here.
I saw this as an anime on Philippine television like way back when I was in fourth grade I think. I don't know why but I loved the character design and the concept. I thought it was pretty cool that they were actors (I think? Maybe my memory is flawed) and then mech pilots as well. And the theme song was pretty cool. Actually, just Youtubed it and it still IS pretty cool.
I had no idea it was based on a game series. But apparently we are not getting the Japanese group that I saw in the anime but some American group. Poop.
The TV series is not canon as far as I'm aware. I think the OVAs and the movie are, though.
And yes, only 3 and 4 were specifically for the DC. 1 and 2 on DC are pretty much straight ports from the Saturn originals. I don't know if the PSP versions are ports or cut-down versions of the remakes on PS2.

Victor Ireland sez, in response to why it took so long to get the series here:
MASSIVE politics between internal divisions of SoA and SoJ. Plus incompetence at SoA, plus Sony's (former) hardball tactics with weirdo PS2 stuff for America. Believe me, it was (and is) a MESS.
Hats off to NIS for breaking through, even if it is the wrong installment on the wrong platforms. It was no small feat, I guarantee you.
Dunno what he means exactly by wrong. What, it's got to have started from the Saturn or the whole deal's essentially a failure? Or alternatively, it's too late? Seeing as there isn't actually any current generation instalment of the franchise (unless you count current handhelds and the DS dungeon crawler) I'm not sure where he's going with that either.
(I mean, I wish there were a current-gen title. Preferably PS3, but if Sakura Taisen goes Wii or 360 in Japan, I'm buying a Japanese machine the moment I can afford one.)

A screenshot of Sakura Taisen with English text? Excellent. Not quite holding out hopes that it'll become such a bestseller that the prequels will be automatically localized, but if they can get any closer to localizing anything out of 1-4 (preferably 3), that'd be fun too. Because of excellent music:

I think the LE is for both consoles, but if not, PS2 version for me.
I might do that anyway, because Idea Hacktory are making the Wii version, and I trust them about as much as I trust XS Games to do a good localization.

Well you just sold me on the PS2 version right there.
Nice, RosenQueen has the preorder collectors editions up.
Wii or PS2?

Really wanted to get it on Wii, but I'll have go to PS2 for that extra voice over disc. Way to sabotage the Wii version, guys.
Both versions are going to be epic tanks, on the level of Growlanser: Heritage of War, but the Wii version of ST5 is going to make that look like a success.

3 and 4, I think.

And this is awesome news indeed. I've been wanting to take a proper whack at one of these games for years.
Sort of.

It's about time, y'all. (Laying it on thick, isn't she?)
Until then, English site is finally live.

Also the hilariously bad name changes are really starting to kill whatever small hopes I had that NIS wouldn't fuck this up.
If the name changes really bug you, the CE's going to include a Japanese version with them unchanged, but who knows how that's going to work out.
The second is the cover for the dual-language LE.

At the very least Wii's can be easily hacked to be made region free... if you guys get screwed over with no release.

Umm... We've kind of known we're getting it for a while now.

Well, now, that wasn't reported on nearly well enough.
