The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
You might have seen the screens earlier here at IGN. Yes, Contra is being reborn on WiiWare through Contra ReBirth. Today, Konami Japan opened a Japanese official site for the game sharing a 1,000 WiiPoint price and a May 12 Japanese release date.
While providing all those details and the screens that you can see in our media section, the page wasn't so clear on what exactly is going into ReBirth. The last "ReBirth" game, Gradius ReBirth, offered a mix of remade Gradius stages. The Contra ReBirth page refers to the game as a completely new title. Players will take control of Bill Rizer, one of the two soldiers from the original Contra, and make use of skillful jumping and shooting to face off against enemies. Two player simultaneous play is, expectedly, included.

I never did check out Gradius Rebirth because I didn't have the space for it. That's no longer an issue with the SD card support, though, so maybe I'll look into it.
Really? I don't remember this stuff from any Contra.
You can't tell me you haven't stood on two platforms while shooting at a wall-mounted grenade launcher and a dude on top before unless you've never played Contra.

The other stuff does look new though.
Well yes that is similar but you have to have one in every Contra. Like you said the rest is new.
I'm still playing Contra IV for DS. Partly because it's so fucking hard I still haven't completed it all the way through, and partly because it's fun as hell. If this is half as good, I'll definitely blast through this shit with the Classic Controller.
The 1up article brings up an interesting point. First, Gradius rebirth, now Contra rebirth. There are rumblings of Life Force rebirth. What's next, Castlevania rebirth? Yes please!

I'd buy a Castlevania Rebirth in a heart beat. I want my awkward jumps and whiping ways back.
Since all this information is being put up under Konami Japan, it's probably not very likely that Wayforward is making this one. That's a shame, since they did a fantastic job on Contra 4.
EDIT: Shyguy, I agree. I can't imagine this being any better than Contra IV. Maybe that's why it's a rebirth. Then they can get away with reusing old stuff. Hope not.
As long it isn't shit-tacular like the XBLA one then I will fucking buy this twice.
There's a new Contra game on the 360?
Nah it's the "arcade port" of the Contra game and it's fucking terrible. And this is coming from a die hard Contra fan.
Holy crap that is awful. Everything is both blown up in size and shortened (no fire gauntlet). The bosses are all incredibly easy and they pussed out on the waterfall alien big time. No level breaks at the end? And what was with the branching paths in the first person segments?
People that think that there's "nothing new" probably thought the same about Gradius Rebirth. Gradius Rebirth was kinda like Gradius, but with tons of new shit and everything refined from the original. It felt like a whole new game. It's awesome.

I could do without the awkward jumps, honestly.
I could do with a Metal Gear ReBirth, too. I always favored the top-down games.
Maybe Stinger ReBirth.
And Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ReBirth.
Pity Sonic the Hedgehog isn't a Konami thing, isn't it?
Anyway, new is great, but even a good remix I can deal with. I don't think it will be as good as Contra 4 overall, but I hope it's at least a little easier, at least in respect to the Konami Code doing something useful until you have a better feel for the game.
That, and getting a 2-player game of Contra 4 going proved to be no easy task for me, either; that might have helped.

Hopefully this will be just as good.
Soooooooooooooooo bought'd its not even funny.
I swear that Gradius Rebirth is the result of Konami cleaning out some old warehouses or offices and finding an old computer from around 1995 that has some old unreleased Gradius game on it.
Pity Sonic the Hedgehog isn't a Konami thing, isn't it?
Is this a joke?
Anyway. Just watched a tool assisted speed run for Goonies II. The mysterious music I was referring to was the first person rooms music. I had not remembered that there was a Lauper tune in there, that is funny. I guess I didn't know there was a Goonies on NES. Never came across it and always just assumed that Goonies II was meant to be a game sequel to the movie. It's funny thinking back to pre-internet days where we could only try games that were physically in front of us and didn't really have any other means of knowing about them except for the occasional print mag or hour-and-a-half-advertisement-in-the-form-of-The-Wizard.

we want probotectors

Shattered Soldier proved that we can have really good Contra action while also looking fantastic and modern.
Fucking love me some Contra
First game I bought (Probotector) when I got my Wii

Contra 4 proved that you can step back and be retro and still be the manliest game ever made.

Actually three of those screens look to be from new areas.
I can't wait. :^:

Goonies would be awesome.
Yeah. I'm just surprised that Konami still holds rights for the game.
This will be probably based on first one. Konami really loves that game for some reason. It was even featured on Pop'n Music 10:

No way, Bill Rizer is like the manliest man's man who ever was a man.
When Dracula asks, "What is a man?", the correct answer is "Bill Rizer."

If this includes co-op play on one system (and unlikely, but here's hoping) online co-op as well, this game is bought so fast.
On a somewhat related note, Konami tried to release Pop'n Music on XBLA as a US version at one point.
Wow, what a train wreck.
I liked Contra 4's difficulty. Extremely difficult, but fair, and meant to be played several times over the varying difficulty levels.
From the sound of things, I should pick up Gradius: Rebirth. I had ignored it, despite being a fan of the series.

Instead of another shitty 3D Sonic game, I assume.
Except for the fact that Sonic Pocket Adventure, Sonic Advance 1-3, & both Sonic Rushes are more or less Sonic: Rebirth.
