I mean, I personally think crypto is the stupidest solution to the stupidest problem. It’s a waste of resources that exists purely because we can’t trust each other or our governments. In an ideal world there would be none of this massive, wasteful overhead because we could simply have trustworthy ledgers and no fear that our ledgers would be abused or our use of them be unjustly limited.

I think the solution to this is not to circumvent government fiat or find some way to remove the need for trust in our institutions or each other, the solution is to repair our trust in our government and one another. The value of currency should be derived from the social contract, not from the fact that some math problems are hard.

Of course, I’m not going to pretend like that’s something I have anything close to a real solution for.

    You're correct, tho.

If Cryptocurrency was some kind of neutral thing it'd be one thing. But it's driving up prices for things like GPU's and RAM which, in turn, is driving up pricing for large supercomputers that do the kind of work I think I remember you talking about that would benefit all of mankind like medical simulations and experimentation. It allows international criminals to operate far more freely (very, very bad fucking people). And it's using a fuckload of energy that we need for other things.

There is not one single benefit to its existence. You don't need an alternate solution when removing the problem is a solution within itself.

Multiple times now I’ve been using a guest bath only to figure out a door I thought was a closet takes me into the master bedroom

Fun fact: the earliest reference to Bitcoin on these forums was in 2011. Over seven years ago. It is hard to believe that it would contribute so much to global warming from such small beginnings.

Bitcoin's massive contributions to global warming are largely because of Chinese Bitcoin mining on coal-powered grids. You could look at literally any heavy computing task in China and say "this is driving global warming."

Those other heavy computing tasks might have value outside of money laundering.

Some significant but unknown/incalculable portion of Chinese Bitcoin use is to pseudonymously subscribe to VPN services to circumvent the great firewall.

That said, I do think that cryptocurrency speculation is stupid, and carbon emissions for speculation is extra stupid. So I'm not saying "Bitcoin is all good." I just don't think that cryptocurrency as a method for circumventing drug laws in the US or censorship in China is morally bad. But that's a deeper philosophical issue: I just can't summon much personal outrage over people breaking laws that I see as unjust.

I'm a bit out of date now, but from last time I read about it bitcoin was also fueled by rich Chinese who were trying to get their Yuan out of China. China has limitations on overseas wealth transfers, exactly because when someone gets rich in China the thing they tend to do is immediately leave China, and take their money with them. So China's like, well, you can move if you want, but your money's staying in our economy, which stymies ultra-rich potential emigrants. Bitcoin was a useful way for folks to move their cash out of yuan, into bitcoin, and then from there into dollars.

So as China started to catch up on various cryptocurrencies the currencies tended to collapse in price shortly afterwards.

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.
