The Hunt for Gollum - Fanfic at its Best *SPOILERS*
So back in 2007 a fellow in England started adapting some appendices from the back of the LoTR novels to a screenplay. What followed snowballed into a full movie production consisting of 160 volunteers looking for some movie experience to pad their portfolio or simply just wanted to help make something about LoTR and a tiny budget of about $5,000. The result has been an entirely passable short film that they are offering for free at their website. It tells the story of Aragorn as he's sent on a quest to find and capture Gollum so that he doesn't reveal any information to Sauron and does a very good job of it overall. The movie, while not approved by Tolkien's estate, is able to exist and be legally distibuted because it is completely non profit.
Some production details that contain some very minor spoilers:
The Hunt for Gollum had a shooting budget of less than £3,000. Location filming took place in North Wales, Epping Forest and Hampstead Heath. 160 people volunteered as crew members for the production. The production design was based on Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. Director Chris Bouchard said, "Peter Jackson's individual look was a big inspiration, it's been an adventure for us to play in that world that he created."
The film's most difficult production aspect was the title character. "Bringing Gollum himself to life has been a major challenge," Bouchard said. "I really didn’t want to cop out and knew that seeing Gollum would be an important part of the film. We have used just about every trick in the book to portray Gollum on screen without the full power of Weta Digital behind us!"
The sound mix was completed at the Futureworks studio in Manchester.
So in this thread I'd like to go for appreciation of the movie and also talk about the merits of fanfic in general. For the sake of posting don't worry about spoilers after this post. The movie is only 45 minutes long and free so watch it already if you don't want anything spoiled.

Is it just "not approved," or is Tolkien's estate and/or New Line Cinema actively trying to stop it?
That comic is terrible and you should feel terrible for posting it.
Also, the people making this are either really ignorant of intellectual property laws or just pretty dumb in general.
No, they cleared it with the Tolkien estate first. It's simply not approved in the sense that it's not canon and not official story in any way. The estate doesn't care so long as they aren't profiting off of it or making any claims to anything in it. And it's a gray area at best because of the nonprofit anyway.
It's gorgeous looking, and the costumes were fantastic.
The editing and pacing were...awkward. And Aragorn's facial expressions were duuuuuuuuuuuuull. I get why they made it, a bunch of people really love LOTR, and wanted to make their own. But storywise, it really added nothing meaningful to warrant its creation.
Eh, nothing more than many deleted scenes in a movie. Which is generally why they're deleted. And I imagine the writer probably preferred pulling something directly from the universe rather than completely making something up. And the fact that it's an enjoyable story is good enough for its creation.
The only real issues I personally had were the occasional bad effects, like when Gollum tries to get out of the bag or the night fight of which the first several seconds consisted of black screen. Which likely couldn't be helped with the budget they had.
I did appreciate the camera tricks for Gollum. Before reading the wiki I was curious if they were even going to show him.
I watched this a few days ago and was amazed by the quality. The orcs look pretty much alike the movies and for as far as I can tell they had a different outfit for every individual orc too.
What made me go o_O is the Vigo Mortensen look-alike they found. Is it his younger brother or something? The similarities are uncanny.

But seriously, isn't the Tolkien estate still releasing new manuscripts that were never meant to be seen?

For a personal project, very impressive. Costumes and acting fantastic, music very good, editing a little rough in my opinion.
Seems like the writer/producers have a serious crush on Aragron, though.
