Bottlenecking.

I hear this term a lot.

However, I'm not entirely sure
a) How I can be aware of it when it is happening

and

b) to what degree it must be happening in my system.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 4094MB RAM
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 4870 x2 2gb vram

Apparently if my ram isn't fast I might be getting bottlenecking as well? Or slow hard drives?

I'm slightly at a loss. I know my system certainly doesn't perform as I feel it should, as I most recently have been trying mirror's edge with no AA or physx on and getting between 10-15 fps, which doesn't seem quite right.

It's probably a software/driver issue rather than a hardware bottleneck. Your system should be just fine for just about any current game.

Hm. How would the speed of the ram affect it?

And how does my current processor compare to, say, an i7 (that is a veiled "Would it be worth upgrading" question :P)

Games are rarely limited by CPU performance.

In addition i7's need new motherboards and memory, so it would be pretty expensive to upgrade.

Highly unlikely to be worth it IMO.

Hmm, then I shall have to have a look at what's going on with mirror's edge then :<

My graphics card should be able to swallow it whole :/

Try newer video drivers or adjust some settings. It may not like the whole X2 part.

An i7 build will run you around a grand if you're conservative on parts.

Now then, what OS are you running? Do you have the most up to date version of your drivers? Did you just install the drivers or are you running Catalyst?

The X2 Radeon could be it, but the solution for that, if any, is drivers and game patches. Beyond that, if the issue arises outside of Mirror's Edge, I'd look at the drives next. What sort of HDD(s) do you have?

Good start to the day. Pity it's going to be the worst one of your life. The light is now on.

Vista 64-bit, and I'm using Catalyst from about a month ago.

The hard drive is a... fairly generic 250 gig ATA affair, nothing particularly fast as far as I know.

Crysis and GTA4 are the main offenders for this, but his machine should be able to run them pretty decently

That's just odd. That system shouldn't be hanging at all unless you are playing at some ungodly high resolution.

    One choice obviously.

Blame vista m i rite guys? olololol

Playing at 1680x1050, as my screen looks horrible playing at anything other than default :P
