okay, i've decided to jump back on the pokewagon and play diamond/pearl. but now that i'm back into this whole thing, i've remembered how aggrivated i was by that ruins of alph 'quest' in gold/silver and it's always annoyed me that i could never figure out what the hell was going on with it.
so help me put my pokewoes to rest, what was with those unknown? and the writing on the walls and what was the point of those puzzles? where you supposed to catch them all and spell out words? where did it lead, what was the motherfucking pokepoint!?
what a work of art is man, and the most boring choice you can make
I don't remember it all that well, but this is the basic gist. You have to gain access to various parts of the cave somehow (don't remember how... think it's pretty trivial though), you solve some puzzle where you place the tiles in the correct places so it makes a picture of one of the prehistoric pokemon, and then I think this releases all the unknown for you to catch. Once you get em all, you can print them with the gameboy printer.
thats it? it was just to have the ability to print out pokemon words on the printer mod nobody owned?
jeeze, i thought there was the biggest storyline twist ever waiting for me underneath those ruins.
i was nicholas cage and alph was my national treasure

Unless I missed something very important (and I really hope I didn't), yep, that's it. I'm as disappointed as you are. There's probably an online walkthrough somewhere that could tell you a little more... personally, I never imagined I'd even have to think about it again... the disappointment is overwhelming...
There was something else in Crystal, I seem to remember. You could go through another hole in the floor and find a secret cave behind it. I remember it being the only place you could catch Smeargle.
I do remember there being some sort of crazy mythology that they never tied up, too. Maybe it was some veiled reference to Suicune? I can't remember.
