In coop, at least, you can play any mission whenever you want. I honestly never tried single player so I dunno about that.

You just have to complete the first Russian mission, which is a tankfest, then you can play any campaign :D

Thank you, kind sir, for this wonderful news!

    I can has Panzerkampfwagen

Hmmm, I wonder if this game models the dreaded Nahverteidigungswaffe.
Little known fact: The original version of this was called the "Nahverteidigungswaffel", but carrying 60L of maple syrup in every tank turned out to be logistically unfeasible, not to mention a giant sticky mess if an AT round went in the wrong place. Guderian had a lot of explaining to do on that one...

The Crossing and Crossover bonus missions were an absolute blast. You with a single squad of 8 people vs. entire German companies?

Sounds like the final Russian mission. 10 men vs. an entire German base. I wish I'd screenshotted the finishing tally.

Losses: 9 men, 4 vehicles (1 flak tank and a few gun emplacements)
Kills: 171 men, 8 vehicles (2 halftracks, 2 flak tanks, 2 heavy panzers, 2 medium)

The last guy literally died pulling the lever at the final objective. It was a two hour slaughter conducted entirely in bullet time.

The final German mission was a blast too. The massive piles of smoking burnt out tank wreckage created by my 2 Tigers and 3 Pak40's during the last 10 minutes of that mission were making it hard to find the actual enemy tanks.

This is weird. When I loaded my game, enemies no longer appear on the minimap. I'd hoped it would fix itself with the next mission, but no such luck. :(

I've even tried starting new campaigns and restarting the game. Did I accidentally turn something off in the options, or am I screwed?

Edit Nevermind, it was a mod.

So this came in the other day. Whoever said that multiplayer > co-op > singleplayer was right. Not that any of it is bad, it's just degrees of awesomeness. I've been laughing so hard just seeing things blow up, and terrain deform, it's great.

Ok... so this game is butt-clenchingly hard.

It's a rare game that hands me my ass on the second level.

I mean come on, how many Panzer IV's do you expect me to take out with a rabble and some light arty???? I need more mines!

The difficulty is much better tuned than Soldiers: Heroes of World War II in my opinion, and either way it makes you feel like a champ when you finish a mission :D

Gamersgate currently have this for £10 vs £25 on Steam and £18 at play.com. I already own both Soldiers and Faces and would not be against reinstalling them, but if they've upgrades stuff like the interface and whatnot then I'm sorely tempted. New missions don't hurt either.

What are peoples experiences with Gamersgate? On a rarely fast day I might get 150kb/s with my connection so I'd be looking at the best part of two days on and off to get it. Do they let you backup the download files so I can install from a burned dvd next time?

Just beat the Russian Campaign, loved the dancing at the end.

Awesome game, very laid back on some missions so you can either rush in with tanks or just hold them back and slowly take our their base with a sniper or a squad.

Sneaking in with a sniper while tanks duke it out, killing their flank patrol, grenading a couple gun emplacements then stealing a howitzer or multirocket launcher and turning it on their line of tanks is an awesome feeling. Then ditching the howitzer and running away as fast as you can as they blindly bombard your last position haha.

Thank god someone bumped this, now I can post this video:

    Don't Stop Me Now

Astute viewers will notice it's a video of Faces of War; but it's the same graphics engine/models and you wouldn't know it's not Men of War unless someone told you. It's a long story. In any case, it's a nice video.

What the hell are you talking about? That is a fucking AWESOME video!

It was hilarious in the part where the truck crossed the train tracks and wasn't run over. I was like "finally, something that doesn't explode in this video." But then it got hit by another train. Whoops.

I've just finished a fourty minute defense of a train yard. Initially I thought I was being rushed into making poor descisions. Then after a few skirmishes I sorted out a few 'crack' teams and positioned them around the various buildings to the south.

While I was busy doing this I failed to note the man screaming about Germans to the north. Next time I looked at the map I'd lost half of the station and all of my tanks were worthless. What followed was the mass evacuation of my troops back through the loading yard to fight alongside the loading crane.

    Then their tanks arrived...

This game takes the series to a new level of amazing.

Apparently my brain can't handle the scale of this. I gave up on the first American mission and got through about half of the second Soviet mission before being destroyed. The first German mission was going well until I had hundreds of guys to command and it overwhelmed me.

But, like a beaten spouse, I keep going back. D:

Edit: Is there a way I can Ctrl+1 or whatever to keep track of specific guys? The squad system is a wee bit confusing. I guess I could read the manual, but pfft.

    Shift+1 assigns selections.

The key with MoW, I have found, is to micromanage the key points of a battle, not the entire battle, which i usually play like a normal RTS - select squad, send to destination, see what happens.

Yeah, that's my problem, all the little dudes have inventories and stuff so my Jagged Alliance brain turns on and I micromanage myself to death.

Did much better on the first German mission now, basically walked around with a sniper and machine gunner using everyone else as fodder. Stole a tank and a halftrack and mopped up. Now trying to figure out the best placement for Flak88s on the second mission.

When you select multiple units and it makes them into a squad, the Squad Leader for that unit will collect ammo/guns and disperse them to the soldiers with the according skills and needs. When I found that out I started to pay attention and it seems to work fairly well. I rarely have to really micromanage the inventories anymore.

This game is fucking awesome. I'm in the second Russian mission, which is turning out epic. Traditional RTS logic is definitely foiling me: "Ok, these are the only two entrances to this are.... HOLY FUCK TANK THROUGH WALL".

The firefights feel so epic. I'm currently on easy because I tend to suck at/get frustrated with RTS's easily, and I want to enjoy this.

How does it work out, exactly? How would a typical game progress? I have yet to play an actual game of multi because none of my friends are willing to buy the fucking game.

I find the MP to be so-so, actually. The game browser, for starters, is not that great (doesn't show ping, filters can't be changed) but gets the job done. I play random, so that means that teamplay is almost non-existant.

I'm not entirely sure about the differences in the resource system, but basicly you can choose between a selection of infantry squads, single infantry specialists (snipers, sappers, commandos etc.), artillery, armored cars, light, medium and heavy tanks and self propelled guns. As the game progresses, you gain more resources, meaning you can get more or heavier tanks. This makes unit preservation extremely important.

The only gripe I have with it is that sometimes it seems like they went with the naziscum-penetration model, meaning that russian and allied tanks are stronger that they were, while german tanks are weaker. Tigers and kingtigers get taken out a little bit to easily for my tastes, but that is the the problem with "realistic" simulations that leave out some aspects that were present in reality (such as crew training, reliability, fuel efficiency, production values etc.)

This is one hardcore game. My poor infantry have a life expectancy of one firefight or so. The lucky ones get to be tank crews, which I baby like mother fuckers. Direct controlling tanks is a blast. Sniping troops behind buildings with AP rounds, shelling the shit out of AT guns with HE, its all great fun.

Damned Jagged Alliance mindset kicking in with all the 'loot' on the ground though. Usually my troops have a rifle, smg, and a mg if they can find them. 0-1 extra clips due to their low life though, I have a carrier that stays back and hands out more ammo to the survivors.
