[BLITZ ON] MEN OF WAR - Assault Squad is Out (NSF56k or Shermans)
Posts
Seems like it might work fine.
Also this game is hard...really hard. And the campaign isnt that fun imo. I really want to play on multi with some PAers though cuz i can see this game being awesome fun on multi.
Coop is the real way to play the campaign. 10 times as fun.
Maybe we need a steam group to organize games. Seems to work for other games.
And yes, this game is helluva hard. How do you do the campaign coop? I'd definitely appreciate some help. The graphics, destructible terrain, interactions, etc are all fabulous, but I feel as if I am missing something when it comes to the interface and controlling my units. The campaign seems to be some what of a tutorial, but the learning curve appears steep.
The voice acting, wow, just wow. I wonder how long it will be before a mod comes out to replace it all.
Doing campaign coop is as simple as hosting a multiplayer match and chosing the "coop" game mode.
1. 90% is pushing it. If you play at peak Russian times it's mostly Russian, but if you don't, it isn't. Russian people are cool. They're much better at video games than your average non-Russian, it seems. That's probably why most of the hardcore games come from Europe.
2. Automatch is coming in a patch. As for autopatch...
3. You should probably have bought it off of Steam. This is, like, advice for life, man.
4. It's almost as if the developers are trying to mimic the shell and armor characteristics of real life tanks. Gasp! If you want to destroy a heavy tank, knock out its tread with your own tank or AT gun and hit it from the side or behind (especially in the engine) with a bazooka/PIAT round, an AT grenade, dynamite, a concentrated burst from a flamethrower, or a large caliber gun. Expecting your AT guns to take on every single tank from the front is just ridiculous and no soldier in World War II would ever have thought about even trying it.
5. Direct control if you're worried about that. It's never really happened to me more than once or twice.
3. I did buy it off Steam. In order to install the 1.6.4 or whatever multiplayer patch you have to download the patch, install to a random directory because it won't find the Steam directory, then copy paste the files into Steam, then use a NEW .exe to play multiplayer and pray it all works because if it doesn't the old .exe will be updated to some random broken patch number that doesn't work.
4. That's all well and good except it's crap for game design. What you wind up seeing is people using super heavy tanks and hugging a game-wall, and spreading out some infantry around them. Your infantry aren't going to get close. Your AT guns and tanks only have one direction they can use to flank the super heavy - straight into the middle of the map. Can you guess how well it works to rush a slugger into the middle of a map? Meanwhile the massive range on the super heavies means they can hit most of the map.
The ONLY counter is to get your own super heavy and going toe to toe. Is that realisitic? Hell yes. Is it fun? Hell no.
Thankfully the majority of people in the game, even the Russians, understand it's an ass-hole move and they don't do it. Still, I usually find 1 out of every 3 games a teammate or an enemy who uses a wall-hugging super heavy. If it's a teammate, I'll TK him the moment someone on the other team tries a good attack which fails due to the game-wall. If it's an opponent I either quit or move to the other side of the map.
What do I love?
I love direct control. I love direct controlling pretty much everything. I spent half a game yesterday just direct controlling an officer's binoculars so my sniper could land head shots and my partner's artillery and long range guns could find targets.
I love the penetration and modular damage system for tanks. Even if there's some balance issues with super heavies being able to exploit the map to prevent flanking, making dedicated AT guns worthless - the system works great for every other tank class and it even works well with super heavies when the operater isn't being a douche bag.
I love the inventory system. Even if it's got a steep learning curve, it's still nice. I like being able to resupply troops. That also means I love the ammo system - you can't just spam artillery everywhere. Every shot needs to count.
I love the potential of the infantry AI. It's not perfect, but it's got a lot of room to grow into something amazing. The fact that units know what's in their inventory (medic kits and AT grenades) and will voluntarily use them when a situation calls for it is amazing. I'd like to see the infantry AI handle going around building corners better (that is, not get entire squads slaughtered by a single guy with an SMG) and I'd like to see grenades not bounce off the cover the guy is using so much - but it's still a solid system.
The campaign is terrible, but it's about what you'd expect from a RTT simulator set in real world WW2. There's no Kane and his Nod army of blimps here.
Warcraft 3 online client is great, so it's not really a good comparison I think, a bit simple, maybe, but very reliable and has some features that modern game lobby still lacks (such as automatically download custom content)
I couldn't get it to work. Got some kind of an error. I'll try again tonight with my buddy. If we can't get it to work I may ask you for a step-by-step. It's possibly user error on our part, or some kind of NAT negotiation error (thank you, Relic, for teaching me about NAT).
They didn't know each other but refused to even the teams and 2 of them even talked smack at the end.
One good thing is that the MoW community, comprised mostly of Russians with penis envy, is making CoH's community look great.
In other news my YouTube videos continue...

Yeah, I know, don't judge a book by it's cover. But I've learned!
And really the person doing the box art is not the dozens of people who worked on the game. Heck even judging a game by its manual is dodgy because those are often done by outsiders too. Basically a game is the only way to judge a game.
The community is terrible, worse than Xbox Live imo, and the game play is riddled by some ridiculously stupid shit like map-edge hugging super tanks.
And hurray for RTSs with a pause button!
How long does it take to find a competitive multiplayer match? and how long is the average match?
All the videos on my YouTube channel are competitive matches. During prime time there are plenty of games, and during some of hours you can find games hosted by Russians which are fun because the Russians are good at the game.
Zenitram, the developers are good with patches but the US publisher not so much, you can download the beta patches from their forums though. There are pretty much no outstanding bugs as far as I know. The modding community is alive and well; there are tons of missions and new units and stuff and some people are working on crazy things like a Mechwarrior mod.

How is Red Tide as a game add on anyhow?
Edit: I just got the game and my god i am in so far over my head it's not even funny.
And then the next mission? Micro-controlling one guy and doing things in a very specific order so you don't get mowed down in a split-second by a random German with a machine gun. Huge pain in the ass.
And yet in coop it becomes amazing.
Gamereplays has some pretty good reads.

or watch TychoCelchuuu's videos indeed gives you a good idea how to play, too.
Lastly, joining the MoW vent channel, you can find lots of games and helpful players there.

Though i suck really bad. I'm in the process of re-installing.
I tried the demo a long while ago, found it enjoyable but didn't want to shell out 30$ for it.
But 5? Hey, why the hell not. Totally up for multiplayer.
