Rising looks incredible, but also incredibly god damn violent. I'm...not really sure how I feel about the ability to literally cut people into pieces. That kind of stuff always makes me a little queasy in movies and stuff.

And yet I love watching people's brains explode in Fallout 3. I don't know.

Rising has rekindled my interest in the MGS series. It had been waning for a while. Rising might end up being a day-one purchase. Need to see more, though.

Trailers for Metal Gear Solid games often don't show you everything. Sometimes, they show the complete opposite of what the game will be like. MGS2, for example.

So it's possible, I think very likely, that this trailer was only meant to show off cutting. The text is only about cutting. No story was revealed. No other characters.

As impressive as the cutting tech is, expect more from the game, is all I'm saying.

I'm mad that you think you know everything about a game based on a few seconds of footage.

They have a new cutting system, they are going to want to show it off.

Who says you won't be sneaking around, trying to sneak up behind someone to cut them down the middle.

I think decapitating someone really fast would work as a stealthy kill.

    First impressions are important.

Always has been the case, gaming is no exception nor exempt from this.

Hey I'm a huge Metal Gear fan, been playing since the NES but this, eh it's not my cup of tea so far. It doesn't even look any different to me then Itagaki game Devil's Third that was revealed a few days ago.

If they can show something new, something amazing, then maybe I'll change my mind, until then I rather focus on some other games that actually do excite me but chopping up people? I've already did that in Ninja Gaiden.

On a more "games currently playable" note:

Peace Walker is pretty fucking badass, guys. I am surprised at how much I like the mission-based structure. Fulton-ing soldiers all up ins. Researching weapons and gear erryday.

Listening to audio logs at work. I think the audio log thing is pretty smart, actually. Instead of codec calls that last 5 minutes and stop gameplay, all that audio is instead placed in audio logs that you can listen to outside of normal gameplay. And there's a list with marks that lets you know what you have and haven't listened to. It's fairly standard as far as a list of stuff goes, but it takes care of the problem of pacing that the codec introduced in MGS. And it lets you take in all the history and context that the codec normally conveyed, just without freezing gameplay.

You might want to try out Afro Samurai, it's not a great game...but what you see there, the main character in that game does as well. You can lop off arms, hands, legs, heads by focusing on where you want to cut.

    A little deja vu really.

You know what I found really handy? All the cutscenes are skippable, and you have the option to replay them again in case you want. This has been tremendously good since I was playing with a friend who already beat the game. This way, we can skip the cutscene and get right to the fighting, and I can go back and watch it at my leisure. If I was doing it all myself I'd watch it all at once, but this way I can at least be considerate to the other guy and we can have time to actually fight and not sit around waiting for the (cool) cutscenes to finish.

And yeah, I'm loving the research and the wealth of equipment/upgrades you can get. From what I've seen, there are some fantastic toys to play with; shotguns that shoot rubber bullets, fulton land mines, Carl Gustov w/ fulton shots, the ambulance box (with flashing light and siren), etc etc.

So forgive me if this is a dumb question, but does the adhoc party utility for ps3 actually support hooking up with random individuals, or provide any kind of a server browser type setup?

I really want to pick this up, but having heard how co-op heavy it is i'm wondering if my total lack of access to other metal gear fans (or even PSP owners) is gonna hurt the experience..

I think that's what it basically is - you connect to 'rooms' where you can find people to play. So, it's nearly like a server browser, but you need to ask people to play instead of just clicking on a server.

Ah, sounds good, thanks. I was worried it was some kind of horrible friend code type setup where you essentially need to know and have had a deep and meaningful lasting relationship with the individual in real life before you can play your online shooting mans game with them.

I'm into a more casual, seedy fly-by-night type metal gear experience. We get what we need out of each other and move on, that sort of thing.

There are several different "worlds", different servers listed from A-J. In each world, there are 50 lobbies. And you can squeeze x amount of people in each.

Once in a lobby, you set up a house, which can accomodate 4 people. And presto, there you go, Ad Hoc connection established.

So you can generally just look for a fairly populated server, then go by room descriptions to find one with people playing a particular game. Or make your own, and list what game you're playing, and hope for others to come in.

One thing to take note of; when you're actually starting a hosted game, you pick the channel you want to use. Most people will just go with Channel 1, since that's the first option. Which is fine normally, but if you have maybe 2 or 3 people doing a mission, then someone else joins the room and just starts to scan on the same channel you guys are on, it will fuck things up. So either use a different channel at first, or lock your room. It can get really annoying when people pop in, scan and cause you to disconnect, then just leave. :x

Conversely, don't join an occupied room and immediately start scanning either. Don't be that guy!
