Aw cripes was that
prison escape
annoying. Took me about 20 minutes of sneaking and failing, finally managed to get through by CQCing everyone and escaping with a sliver of health left.
Now I'm right before the big Metal Gear fight. Hot damn, these robots just get more and more intimidating with every pre-fight cutscene.
More later, time for bed.
First, some background story is in order. Rising takes place between Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4. Famitsu pointed out that at this point in the series' chronology, Raiden has begun a change to cyborg form, which is how he's decpited in MGS4. However, Matsyama noted, the Raiden we see in Rising looks markedly different from the Raiden we see in MGS4. Rising will clue us in on the events that made Raiden change from is Rising self to his MGS4 self.

-FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFuuuuu, I want this game now.
I don't see why people are assuming that the 3DS version is going to be a 1:1 port, and as such be the exact same size.
Assuming they scale back the textures, trim the fat from some of the cutscenes and codec bits, fiddle with some areas... you know, remake the game, I can see them fitting onto whatever space is available.

Cool. A bit bothered by the conflicting tech with the mechanical humanoid soldiers.
Since when has Metal Gear Solid ever had any sort of logical continuity of story, let alone of it's fake technology
The jumbo-FROG in the beginning really bothered me, not because the technology seems much more advanced than anything in 4, but because it so blatantly looks like it was designed as an enemy archetype for a hack and slash game. It just screams 'I am an enemy in a videogame' to me. I mean, yes, that's exactly what it is, but at least with the GEKKO those looked like something the military might actually develop.

I can't find my Subsistence disc, but on the Snake Eater disc, there are two FMV video files (the background video for the "Snaaaaake eater" movie and the "Basic Actions" movies, I believe) that take up around 2GB combined. The Snake Eater disc is 4.2GB. Simplify the opening or compress it a great deal more, and remove the Basic Actions movies, and you're likely almost down to 2GB already. Snake Vs. Monkey would obviously be removed too. There won't be a problem fitting the whole thing on the 3DS cart if they want to.

To be fair, since it's set between MGS2 and 4, there's likely going to be the Area 51 angle that was mentioned in the database. The writer of that is the main writer for Rising.

Oh gawd, I just flipped through the Art of Metal Gear Solid 4 book by Shinkawa.
I came.
MGS4 has bar none, the best concept art of the series. It's insanely detailed, its beyond insane. You can see every pore on every person, and the mechanical designs? Sweet Jesus. It's got great stuff like a full view of Outer Haven, detailed art on all the military support machines, even stuff you only see for a second like the power armor in Act II. Snake has never looked more badass, neither have Raiden or Meryl. We get full art on all of the Beauty and the Beast Corp, including them as Kojima originally intended, nekkid. Don't get too excited though, there's an incredibly disturbing shot of the B&Bs nude... surrounding their also nude pimp daddy Vamp. Yeahhh... not too disapointed they cut that. :P
The alternative designs we never got are just as awesome. Sunny had a cute combat harness where all her cooking gear went, Raiden had parts of his original skull suit in his Ninja design, Snake had some weird stuff like dorky head gear, and Crying Wolf was originally just a girl in a power suit with Fortune's rail gun.

Wait wait wait, when did they make an Art of MGS4? I thought all there was was that crappy Gamestop preorder artbook that was mostly CG renders. I've only seen a handful of actual art around the internet.
On that note, I think MGS2 has some of my favorite work from Shinkawa.

I just realized Rising will be the first MGS game I'll actually own, not having a PS3 and all. Had to borrow my friend's PS2 and PS3 a few summers ago after MGS4 came out cuz I wanted to see what the big deal with the whole series was. Yeah, that was an excellent few weeks.

Much thanks. This helps stop me from going over to Play Asia and ordering the book right away. I've already spent enough money on a PSP/PW/PW merch as it is.
I always did love the designs of the hi-tech soldiers (different from Tengus). Took me five playthroughs though to realize they were 'secret service' guys Johnny was talking about on the can.

Unfortunatley not, as, according to the Database, that was before Raiden was fitted with his exoskeleton. The game has been unofficially dated as being set between 2012 (which is the year Raiden is captured by The Patriots and turned into a cyborg) and 2014 (the year of MGS4). Raiden infiltrating Area 51 to rescue Sunny happened in 2011.
Also I would like to point that The Naked Sample is NOT a flat-out port of MGS3. Just look at Big Boss. That's his Peace Walker model.

Isn't it possible that they have a sort of 'tanker chapter' set in Area 51, before the main game?
Also, poor metal gear acid, with its young snake set in 2016. That just doesn't make sense anymore!

And Ac!d has never been part of the main storyline. Also clones coming out the wazoo.

I know it's not canon, but I'd like it to be sort of possible to pretend it's canon. I guess I can just pretend it's set around about MGS1 time.

I've been playing Peace Walker at last, and really getting into it. The controls sure took some getting used to, but it's been a lot easier than Portable Ops, that's for sure. The environments and mechanics are a hell of a lot nicer than Portable Ops, as well.
One thing that I've not been able to figure out, though: Are all the missions solo if you're playing single player? I'm used to the 'four man unit' deal with PO, but in Peace Walker so far I've only been able to use one unit at a time. If that's the case, why even have a combat unit? Snake's more qualified than anyone else, so I'm guessing I'm missing a pretty big game mechanic here. I also see various markers for people along side each op on the mission selection ( 0/1, 0/2, etc). Am I missing something here?
Later on in the game, and in the post game, there are lots of missions that would be much easier with a proper combat team. Every try to solo capture a tank that can machine gun its 152mm cannon? It's hard (or tedious and boring, depending on how you do it) to do it solo, but much, much easier with a team. Not to mention, later on there just isn't enough futon to capture everybody on the map!

Since MGS1, yes. That would be Yoji Shinkawa. His art is incredible. There's also Ashley Wood(nsfw), who's responsible for the artwork in the comic adaptations, Portable Ops, and most of Peace Walker. I can't say I always enjoy his take on the MGS-verse (honestly I thought Digital Graphic Novel was mostly pretty awful), but his own work shines.
Okay, here's one scan of the MGS4 artbook. Apparently there was going to be some kind of fifth Beauty and the Beast boss that was supposed to be their commander. A kind of 'anti-Snake' cyborg, Snake-Man:

I wonder how much of that is voice files that could be converted to text, which would probably be better in a handheld anyway.

maybe they could take out the holdup voice files like they did for Peace Walker

Also, Fulton recovery is way too much fun.
But yes, you are solo unless you're doing multiplayer. You can't bring other guys with you like you could in PO.
And It's not a bad idea to use guys in the Combat unit because I've got some soldiers who are better at Combat than even Snake.
