From wikipedia:
"Runic Games is a computer game company formed by Travis Baldree (creator of Fate), Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer (co-founders of Blizzard North), and the Flagship Studios Seattle team responsible for Mythos. Following the dissolution of Flagship Studios in 2008, all 14 members of the Seattle team signed onto Runic Games, and the company is currently developing an action role-playing game similar to their previous project Mythos."

"The Seattle-based Runic counts developers of titles including Diablo, Diablo II, Fate and Hellgate: London as part of its team, and while few details have been announced, Torchlight is described as being in the same vein.
It's an action-MMORPG where players take the role of adventurers from the town of Torchlight, exploring a nearby mountain range to find a "magic ore" that "imbues their equipment with power, yet imperils their very existence.""
Yeah, as much as I liked mythos and am looking forward to this game, the first thing I thought of when looking at that those screens was the first area we saw of Diablo 3.
There were some problems with Mythos, but hell, it wasn't even that close to complete. It was fun while it lasted. Hopefully the skill trees are a bit better this time around. The graphics look a good bit better already. Unless I'm blind and it's actually the same engine. It is like 3am.

I think it is a new engine. I saw the game on the Ogre 3d boards, which is a 3d graphics API that they used to build the engine.
It's been said before, but Flagship really would have been better off sinking their money into Mythos instead of Hellgate. How so many supposedly brilliant people could make so many bad decisions is beyond me, and I don't mean the crazy tiered business model. The game could have survived that if the gameplay was there.
Mythos was fun, but it was missing something I couldn't put my finger on. I played D2 right after Mythos died and realized D2 was still better. I think overall the talent trees just werent as interesting as D2 for some reason.

Hellgate failed because 80% of the levels looked the same. Random 3d world generation is awesome, but shit... make more than 8 houses. I don't know how many times I looked at that stupid 3 story house with basement, upper and lower... 2 crates in the top. It was just tiring. Not only that but the acts didnt change scenery, you had 3 or so acts of looking at that damn house, and those sewers. You never really hit a new tileset, except when they added stonehenge (which was awesome, but felt totally out of place being the first new tileset), so you never really felt like you progressed.
It's also not an MMO, at least not at first. They're putting most of their effort into a moddable single-player game, probably to get some money coming in, and then they'll be working on an MMO.
And like I said in my thread that everyone ignored, the game doesn't look like Diablo 3, it looks like Mythos.

I stopped playing Mythos after they decided to cater more to PVP, it was partitioning the player base. I loved the fact that they were using different races/classes than most games even though they fell in similar archtypes (satyr, cyclops, gremlin, cool!). Hopefully they are aiming at a different audience than the Diablo crowd 'cause they'll be hard pressed convincing people their game is better.

I like the style, but those environments came straight out of Diablo 3.
Yes they use the same dark gothic environments to create claustrophobic terror.
Yeah.. I guess we are being really big petty complaining babies about it for attempting to make any parallels...
You missed the dripping sarcasm in my comment. I am actually one of those Diablo 3 looks way to much like Wow haters. Don't get me wrong, Wow is a beautiful game, I am constantly impressed with the clarity and consistency of the visual design. But, Diablo should have a distinct art style in my opinion.
Yeah Torchlight totally looks like Diablo 3, which further reinforces my opinion that Diablo 3, with its exaggerated shapes and bright primary colors, looks too cartoony.

Sorry didn't mean to dupe your thread. I did a quick check on the pages for Torchlight and didn't see anything.

Yes.. yes that will rile them. ;-)

Actually it kind of reminds me of Karazhan.

But seriously I enjoyed Mythos but I agree there was something missing from it.

I can't tell if that is sarcasm or not.
