Let's go through the list of reasons why this is bullshit.
1) The system pictured in the first image is different from the following images.
Spot the difference to win a fat bundle of rape dollars!
2) It looks like a fucking binder that I would have used in 4th grade or some shit.
Anybody care to add to the list?
There are no visible fans. The side panel is a solid plastic panel.
The PS3's hardware produces some heat, guys. We haven't had enough process shrinks in the past couple years for them to cut down on cooling this much.

Just to play devil's advocate Dae, what if this supposed slim model cuts back on most of the PS3 features - that is, a PS3 that is simply for playing games? Would it still need to be as bulky?
The overall design/plastic texture is a bit iffy. Plus, seems a bit weird that there would be a carton and a produced model even before the unveiling, or are the plastic gloves an indication that this is from inside the factory or something?
I dunno, really.

Looks plausible to me. Could be fake, sure, but if it's real it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

If I remember correctly the PS3's guts are pretty small as it is already.
If this is true and it came with a price reduction I would definitely consider getting it. It looks pretty similar to the Slim PS2.
My friend is going to be a bit P.O.d about this. Nintendo and MS can't be too happy either, especially not if it is accompanied with a drop in price...
This, and maybe the part where it came from the Chinese. If Command and Conquer: Generals taught me anything, it's the Chinese cannot be trusted with computers, tanks, or nuclear power.
Is Sony even making enough money with the PS3 to justify the manufacturing of a new slim version of the damn thing? Does it solve some purpose? Why would they bother?

Nor should they get their hands on napalm or loudspeakers.

I think they'll do fine. Even if it was real, no one would care. The PS2 slim was brilliant, the PS3 slim is a useless concept right now. It doesn't even look small enough to matter.

I think any editor that approves the "Rumor:" headline prefix should be hit over the head with a newspaper. Also, Twitter is the goddamned worst thing to happen to game journalism's already dwindling credibility in years.
I think it's possible. You don't know what stage those shells could be in in the design/ production process. Maybe they haven't cut the fan grills out yet. Maybe it's made of a cheaper plastic, since there is no need to use the better stuff on a test shell. Like someone else said, maybe it is a stripped down version of the console.
Who knows. That box looks pretty convincing to me, though.
I don't get why everyone discounts Sony doing something crazy like this as fake. It's par for the course.
Plus it looks like the box shot/production shot difference you guys are using to say it's fake is just the box shot has the bottom of the console attached and the production shots don't, hence the silver part in front of the disc tray in the box shot.
Being in china, and seeing SO many rip off systems here, I bet its just a PS2 kit for some people that wish they had a PS3 but have no realistic way of owning one (4000-6000RMB, 500RMB games, most young people lucky to have 1000-1500 a month jobs). I've seen two PS2s already that look like this (a case modeled after the PS3), but they atleast said PS2 on the top, not PS3.

What could they chop out that would save space? The hard drive is needed for existing games, as is the Blu-Ray drive, as are all of the current major ICs in there.

Admittedly, I haven't opened up my PS3 to look inside and see how it works. I'd say I'd fuck my warranty if I did so but I bought the thing used anyhow.

I'd be shocked if they chopped out anything from a hypothetical slim PS3, since pretty much every feature is a portal to making them money (in theory). Maybe WiFi, but if Nintendo can cram it into the Wii, Sony can cram it into a slim PS3.

From what I can see, I'm absolutely betting on it.
Why do I say this? First of all - mobile cameras. Sooner or later something's going to slip.

MainTek is the company making the PS3s in China. Seems kinda clear to me. Suffice to say, heads will roll.[/url]

That's a good point. Nintendo has shown that technology can be slimmed down a lot.
I can't believe people are gullible enough to give this credit.
As of now there is actually more reason for believing than against. It's not a case of gullible and skeptical, it's a matter of weighing different factors, of various degrees of skepticism.
From what I can see, I'm absolutely betting on it.

Having someone ask to have the pics removed was just what I was waiting for to confirm this as fact. Anyone thinking this is some elaborate fake is just dense at this point.

Also, LOL SONY.
Not just that they asked them to remove it, but that they pretty much identified themselves in the process.
It could still be fake, but it's gaining credibility.

Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
Microsoft used up the world's fan supply for the 360.
Maybe it's a P-P-P-PS3?

If they could sell it at $300 or $250, that'd help them out vs. the cheaper 360 SKUs and the Wii.
As far as timing, it wouldn't be that unusual. There were four years in between the PS2 and PS2Slim and two years between the PSP and PSPslim.
All that said, this is almost certainly fake.
Nor should they get their hands on napalm or loudspeakers.

It would be yet another way to provide an incremental upgrade to justify not lowering the price.

bottom-half, (flat and forms that ledge in front of the disc-slot)
Only because I'm hoping for a price drop along with the new model.
