May 15, 2009 - Rumors circulated the internet yesterday regarding a supposedly leaked set of photos of Sony's "PS3 Slim." Previous hardware choices on Sony's part, including the slimmer PS2 and the PSP-2000, would suggest that Sony would eventually create a slimmer version of its powerhouse hardware, but would it be so soon after the system's launch?
Today, we received word that a trustworthy US GameStop employee discussed the matter with a Sony merchandizing representative. When the leaked photos were brought up in private conversation, the merchandizing representative was immediately surprised that the photos were "released already," but then hastily dismissed the subject when the rep realized that it was regarding a rumor. Could this reaction indicate that the PS3 Slim is more real than we originally thought?
We certainly take this information with a grain of salt, but it at least enhances the possibility that a PS3 Slim will arrive sometime in the future.

What's even better is that this is literally "This one guy at gamestop told me..."
It's like why bother to follow up on the information and do investigating? And even if the investigation fails, include that it was done in the article. Oh no, gotta get this fucking news out fast. Gotta let the goddamn world know that we know a guy who says things about an already ongoing rumor.

Guys, I have it on good authority that this industry insider has leaked even more info on the fabled PSP redesign!

I love the phrase "I have it on good authority," because it really preps up the mind-blower you're about to set loose on the world. Like:
I have it on good authority that the new PSP will have digital hookers jump out of the screen and shake their tits in your face every time you start up a game.

Perhaps I'm being a slowpoke - apparently MS went out and said that that gamefork guy didn't come close to what they are actually offering at E3 - while we are dealing with rumors. I can't imagine why they would lie about that, and I'm not being ironic.
Shame, MGS4+ for the Box would have been... Stimulating for the internet.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
I think the knee-jerk negative reactions to the design of this mysterious device are driven by two emotions:
A. The disappointment of having purchased a PS3 within the past 6-12 months only to see a replacement already
B. An irrational distaste for Sony products
I think the more rational negative reactions to the design are driven by a misreading of the halved shell. I was just talking with a friend who referred to the "gay-ass little feet" which are actually tabs to lock the top half of the shell into the bottom. So it's not that thin, either. The part in pic 2 snaps into the part in pic 3.
Guys, this completely follows the existing industrial design language of the PS3. That is, once it's snapped together. It's a clipped oval cylinder intersected by a rectangle. With a more subtle chrome accent. The only thing that really doesn't fit is the "PLAYSTATION 3" rebrand to "PS3." Which, wistful for the easy money days of "PS2," I wouldn't think completely impossible for Sony to do.
If anything, the original PS1 and PS3 are the oddballs when it comes to naming. The lettering in the pictures in the OP are reminiscent of the PS2 while still being different. Some examples include the lettering of "PS3" basically being a more curved version of "PS2" lettering used back in the day and the emphasis on the abbreviation over the full spelling. Compare this to the current PS3 boxes, which don't use the abbreviation. http://www.videogamesblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/ps3-80gb-model-box.jpg

If it has BC, I'm going to be pissed off. Also my PS3 is going to be traded in immediately to get a slim cheaper.
The creative force behind the design of PS3, Teiyu Goto, has revealed how the Spider-Man font came to be used on PS3 in an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine.
Goto explained, "Take the PS2 logo - we created it to blend in with the rectangular shape of the console. Personally, I feel very strongly that the logo would not have looked right on PS3.
"If you really look at the PS3 contour carefully, it is rounded when viewing the console in profile. Rather than creating a typography with all the risks that entails, it was wiser to use the one from Spider-Man, for which Sony has the rights.
"It was also the wish of President Kutaragi, who insisted that I use this typography. In fact, the logo was one of the first elements he decided on and the logo may have been the motivating force behind the shape of PS3."
Can someone explain why a bunch of people think this is ugly? The main difference seems to be that it has a duller black, the width is decreased, and the height is decreased the most. Other than that, it looks pretty much the same.
Shit, it is actually like officially the Spider-Man font? I just thought it bore an uncanny resemblance.
Both are just based on the 1979 font, with the addition of a slant. Not fully italicized, but enough to differentiate between the 1979 font. Surprisingly, it was used on the Smashing Pumpkins song of the same name.

meh. it kind of just looks like a hunk of plastic. the final product might look better, but it just looks too simplistic as it is right now.

Proving yet again you can't spell ignorant without IGN.
1) I work retail and I don't know if this is different outside Canada, but as far as I know, merch reps aren't given information that hasn't been officially announced yet. They tend to have a pretty good sense of whether or not rumours are plausible, but they've never told me anything I hadn't already read on Kotaku. They also work for Sony, so you know their info is at least a tad biased.
2) I would be shocked if they weren't working on a slim PS3. Why not? The only real questions have to do with timing and pricing. My best guess about their strategy is that they're using the redesign as an attempt to cut costs as much as possible so they can debut at $299 or $249 and maybe appear competitive for once.
3) In lime is one of my favourite phrases ever. Thank you for using it; screw you for using it before I got to.

Yeah, and if Sony mailed me a free HDTV, I would totally use it.
Given how quick Sony was to drop all forms of PS2-BC, I can't imagine any future models having it. Which is why I hope my 80GB PS3 doesn't crap out on me (I own 1 PS3 game and more than five PS2 games that I still play).
But yeah, seriously. A PS3 of that design wouldn't just overheat, it would spontaneously combust and incinerate anything within a half-meter radius, like a small incendiary bomb. Hilarious, but not a design even Sony would put out.

Back when I worked for GameSpy we'd even use that phrase in the office joking around from time to time.

They dropped it because they wanted people to buy PS3 games, not PS2 games. Though they probably didn't realise people weren't buying PS3 games because there were hardly any on the shelves. Now people are buying PS3 games - since there are actually good PS3 games on shelves. Adding PS2 BC wouldn't hurt as much as it did back then. I can't see it happening, but if they did, my current PS3 would be traded back so fast.

I agree with you and am hoping so much that they release it at a 299 or 249 price point. That would seriously be a day 1 purchase for me, BC or not. On the other hand, sony's slim models are always more expensive then the regular, so I'm not holding my breath.
While I don't think the design is something to write home about (can it even stand vertically this one?), I do like the new PS3 logotype. It make a huge amount of sense when compared to the PS2 logo and the body design of the PS2/PS3. I retrospect though, I do have to say that the Spiderman logo served its purpose... but I'm hoping this new logo isn't fake.

Heard the proposition that RIAA and MPAA should join forces and form "Music And Film Industry Association"?
Even if that example came true, $299 for an 80 GB PS3 is still a hell of a deal, slim or not.
See, because there's no real benefit in a slim other than space constraints (and really, that's not something you have to deal with on a shelf). The PS2 slim was awesome because the fat PS2 was a piece of shit as far as hardware was concerned.

The point of a slimline PS3 (well 90% of the point) would be to lower manufacturing costs to Sony. I doubt both would be on the market at the same time but if they were the slim would have to be cheaper.
$299 on the original PS3 would have Sony losing over $130 per system sold. At this point in it's lifecycle that's just stupid.

As much as I love BC, think about this... why not just remove BC, then re-release PS2 titles "with upgraded HD resolutions" (or extra features, MP that wasn't there, aka MvC2, etc) then sell them on the PSN store.
Wait, they are doing this already. They just aren't flooding the PSN store with PS2 games, rather, do it slowly over time, so no one gets what their master plan is. To late, I already figured it out. They want to make more money off games they have already sold you on to help with their losses.
Oh yea, and "because people should just focus on buying PS3 games"... or something like that.
