Oh, that's something I forgot to mention. You can also use a HDMI -> DVI adapter cable if you plan to use your PS3 with a monitor instead. I do that for my PS3, you can change the audio output to be separate from the HDMI output.

So I'm trying to backup my data before I send it off and it's saying that I need like 25 GB more to store my backup stuff. I don't have anything to store that much memory on! I was figuring I could fit everything on my 4 gig usb drive. I don't have anything on my system anymore, no games no pictures, music or nothin. I only have like 10 saves. Is it backing up my downloaded games or something casue I do have like 4 of those...
Does anybody have any idea why it takes up that much space, or better yet any ideas of what I can do?
Oh alright thanks. I just realized I havta drop this at a UPS store as opposed to any old post office. Looks like tomorrow is the day.
Yeah that did the trick. I had no idea those installs ate up that much disk space.
Also, make sure you logon, go into the account management and deactivate your PS3. You know how you're allowed to download your games to 5 different PS3's? That'll get rid of the one you're currently using, putting it back to 5 (or whichever, depending on if you've shared stuff).

You do need a HDMI cable, but that's like $.01 at Amazon.
Make sure it supports your TV's resolutions. That's something they try and pull quite often.
For current displays the max data throughput needed is 10.2Gbps. Even the cheapies will usually do this - but if it doesn't cite that spec you may want to be wary. If you're looking for 4k compatibility because you want to buy a cable now and use it for the next decade you'll want to get a faster cable...
So yeah, get a 10.2Gbps cable. The cheap stuff should be fine, but a more solidly built cable shouldn't run you more than $30.

Doe that matter for a HDD swap? I never did that.
Nope, only when you're going/likely to swap your PS3 for another.
I have been thinking about getting a PS3 recently. I have just got a crapload of store credit for Gamestation. I would wait til after christmas at least since I have a load of stuff on the 360 to play right now anyway, and not a huge deal of free time, but I could see myself getting one.
Oh man. The Netflix streaming disc? Simply unbelievable.
Maybe I had lower expectations since this is kind of being pitched as a stopgap until the Microsoft contract lets them build it into the XMB, maybe the thing about it using BD-Live had me thinking the interface would be laggy and annoying, but wow...
So far, this thing appears very nearly flawless. Which happens to also be the name of a film available in HD of which I tested the first few minutes, and it streamed beautifully in 720p. Menus are crisp and responsive, and neatly laid out in I think the same way as the Roku box has them.
I recall some of the critiques of the XBL Netflix app saying that HD barely broke even with a normal DVD, but this, upon casual inspection, looked essentially like Blu-Ray. It appeared to be nearly saturating my internet connection, as the PS3's nice little select-button playback status reported VBRs sometimes in excess of 5Mb/s, never stuttering or pausing.
I'm probably asking for something to go completely wrong here, but so far I am just amazed at how well they pulled this off. At this point, they could announce they were canceling the XMB-based player tomorrow and I wouldn't bat an eye.
and my SIXAXIS goes out completely. Won't reconnect. Won't turn on. Nothing. I pressed reset. Nothing. It's on the USB cable right now but still nothing is happening. Any ideas?

Damn it. I didn't find out about this PS3 netflix disc until just recently and now I gotta wait for god knows how long to get a disc.

I couldn't agree more about the Netflix disk. My wife and I just watched Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels in HD and it looked and sounded as good as that film really can. The best part is not having the annoying pauses that I'd always have when streaming to the 360 with the bandwidth changing crap. I never made it through a whole episode of 30 Rock without the damn thing pausing and changing into or out of HD because of "bandwidth changes" on the 360, but I didn't have a single issue like that with the PS3.

I got my disk today. It is a good interface. It is slower to browse than using the website on a PC. I uploaded a demo on Youtube for the curious. I have been watching South Park season 9. I haven't had any problems.
Everyone should get the RealTriggers. They're great.
RealTriggers are great for trigger heavy games like wipeout or other racing games. But they aren't so hot when you have to use both the L1 and L2 at the same time like for Uncharted 2. The nice thing is they snap on and off easy so I'm glad I have them around for Motorstorm and Wipeout.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
This maybe a stupid question, but I've been very ignorant of obvious features before. If a PSP game is on the PSN (Dissidia) can I DL it onto the PS3 and play that via the PS3?

No.
This would eliminate the need for a PSP, which is not something Sony wants to do.

When you were cycling through movies, were you moving that slow for the demonstration? Or does the system only go movie to movie that quickly? I have over 300 movies in my queue, and that's going to be fucking cumbersome if it switches that slowly.
PS3 question:
Has anyone heard of anyone being able to get a PS3 to play nice with a 1024x1080 monitor? Via either VGA or DVI?
I would like to get a new monitor, and I would like to get a PS3, but the answer to this question determines which comes first.
I think your only option is DVI, using a HDMI > DVI cable. I have no idea how the PS3 will handle a fullscreen monitor...my guess is you'll have to deal with some pretty insane black bars, since the PS3 will only output widescreen through HDMI (AFAIK). My 1680 * 1050 one worked fine- the only catch being that it's 16:10, so you either get tiny black bars or the left and right edges slightly cropped. So if you can, get a 16:9 monitor.

That said, the quality of netflix via ps3 is way, way better than netflix via web or via plex.
I'm wondering if the quality will take a dive as more and more people start using the service...
