Can someone explain why a bunch of people think this is ugly? The main difference seems to be that it has a duller black, the width is decreased, and the height is decreased the most. Other than that, it looks pretty much the same.
I don't really understand the hate on it either, considering how ugly the current PS3 is to begin with. I think it's a huge improvement.

I've always said that the PS3 looks like a PS2 that ate too many burritos.
In all honesty this console generation has been extremely dissapointing. The Wii hasn't been as good as the Gamecube, the 360 library is a lot less diverse than that of its predecessor and the PS3 is, well, the PS3.

Though I'm not really sure that the 360's library is less diverse than the XBOX's or that the PS3 has any bigger problems than the fact that it's losing money at $400 over two years after release and the fact that Japan is too small to really support HD games' budgets. Admittedly those are big problems.

Yeah this generation is kinda lame. There hasnt been anything that made me go out there and say 'OH MUH GUD I MUST GET THAT!', especially at PS3 price point. At least my 1st gen PS2 is going strong, and still getting lots of play time.
Even if that example came true, $299 for an 80 GB PS3 is still a hell of a deal, slim or not.
See, because there's no real benefit in a slim other than space constraints (and really, that's not something you have to deal with on a shelf). The PS2 slim was awesome because the fat PS2 was a piece of shit as far as hardware was concerned.
The point of a slimline PS3 (well 90% of the point) would be to lower manufacturing costs to Sony. I doubt both would be on the market at the same time but if they were the slim would have to be cheaper.
$299 on the original PS3 would have Sony losing over $130 per system sold. At this point in it's lifecycle that's just stupid.
This is a good point, but I think the important reductions are already happening inside:
Shamelessly stolen: the motherboards for original PS3 and newer ones:
As long as they're still using the same form factor for the internals, they can sell the version with the smaller case at a premium while saving even more money on the cooling system for the larger one.

Nah the 360 has been stellar so far. The hardware, not so much. The service - whatevs. But the game are thick and fast and really good. It is absolute lunacy to say the 360 library is less diverse, and plays right into the 'olol shootbox' stereotype that is untrue and baseless.
I wasn't particularly impressed by Little Big Planet.
Though this largely has to do with Sony's focus on the whole "build a game" tools the thing has.
I like to buy games to play, not pay money to build my own games to play.
That's why I knew that LBP would only be a fad. There really aren't a lot of people out there that truly have fun creating levels. Personally I can lose hours of my life in the Unreal Editor and not even realize it. However, even if I had a PS3, I still wouldn't buy LBP because there are better games to be played on my console.
As far as this generation sucking, it's nowhere near over so don't count it out yet. There's been plenty of great games for the 360 thus far. Let's face it, the PS2 brought us the best gaming years in video game history. Combine that with backwards compatibility and a robust library of RPGs on the PSX and it's a really tough act to follow.

This is a good topic for a thread of its own, but I would say I'm pretty satisfied with this generation so far. Maybe it's that I'm not in college this time and don't play quite as many games, but while I suppose quantity of quality has been less, the quality of the good ones hasn't disappointed me at all.
Of course, if you want to talk about PC gaming now versus 1999-2002, that's another thing entirely.

Perhaps but I doubt they could sell many slims at a $100 premium. If they could make a bulkier PS3 at that much of a discount then they would be stupid to spend time and money designing a PS3 slim when rushing to get a $300 PS3 out would be 1000x* as important.

Meh, if you're into any sort of niche gaming as has been traditionally accepted on the console side of things, then the 360 really has been a bit of a disappointment.
Strategy RPG's? JRPG's in general? Hack and slash action games? Stealth games? Zelda-style action RPG's? The 360 may have a game or two representing some of this stuff, but much of it is Western-developed, and lots of them, Western or Japanese, just aren't very good. The 360 really has nowhere near the depth of the PS2.
I mean, does the 360 have a God Hand? Okami? Front Mission? A good Tenchu? Odin Sphere? A roguelike / dungeon crawler? Yeah, sure, this may just be Japanophile crap to the majority of players, but it's important to some of us.

You know, for a couple of months I thought LBP was going to be proven a fad, but I think it's migrated into a third stage now.
Stage 1: Popular excitement, glut of user content, wild experimentation
Stage 2: Burning out, waning of user content, perception of limits of creative environment
Stage 3: Consistent level of interest, moderate frequency of user content, establishment of rules for what is actually fun
If you just sit down to play LBP with some friends every Friday night, there's almost always something worthwhile waiting for you.
My point is that certain genres are in fact underrepresented on the 360.
I can play Ninja Gaiden 2, DMC4, or whatever that recent Ninja game was if I want a hardcore action game on the 360.
On the PS2, we'd have 3 DMCs, God Hand, 2 Viewtiful Joes, 2 God of Wars, 2 Shinobis, Samurai Western, Samurai Champloo, 2 Gungraves, etc, etc, and so on, and so on...
Not all of the above games are amazing (including those listed for the 360), but you did at least have a lot to choose from with the PS2. Absolutely not the case for a good few genres on the 360 (and really, the PS3 and Wii too).
I mean, does the 360 have a God Hand? Okami? Front Mission? A good Tenchu? Odin Sphere? A roguelike / dungeon crawler? Yeah, sure, this may just be Japanophile crap to the majority of players, but it's important to some of us.
The 360 has a God Hand; it's called The Dishwasher: Undead Samurai. Incredibly difficult? Check. Bizarre sense of humor? Check.
Also, a new Front Mission was announced for the 360 a few weeks ago.

PS2 has been out quite a bit longer than the 360, remember. Judging purely on quantity and not proportions is ridiculous.
Fair enough, although I'm not sure why it's ridiculous. We have yet to get a great JRPG on the 360, and we're going on the system being 4 years old now. Even when we get FFXII, it doesn't mean the genre is well-represented, it just means we finally have a good game.
Really, I think the exact definition of a genre being well-represented would take quantity present into heavy consideration.

Hardly surprising for an American product. JRPGs are in decline anyway, a shade of the genre they used to be. Mainly because the Japanese games market is in decline also. Heck, the UK is a bigger games market than Japan now. If you said that ten years ago you would be labeled clinically insane.
Also, Lost Odyssey is good. I mean it's hardly Skies quality but it's far from mediocre. Very good game.
Of course on the flipside you could easily argue that the 360, or the PS3 aswell - have game content that sells the most. The best selling games are all in the same genres. Call of Duty 4 has sold much more than Final Fantasy 7 to an install base half the size.
Breadth of choice is nice when quality is varied. But when mediocre developers go out of business, and consumers spend more on higher quality titles - dropping the chaff is a good thing for all involved. And while it is true that certain genres are overlooked, they are overlooked for a reason. Fiscal reasons. The consumer speaks and they say they want something else.

Can't really argue there, and even if I wanted to it isn't the place. Like I said, the 360 may be awesome for the majority of gamers (I really did enjoy mine, at least when I wasn't thousands of miles away from it), but certain types of game see much less play on the system than others, and pointing out the cause as lack of Japanese support for it doesn't really change the fact. Some types of game may not make enough money to show up on the system, but that doesn't mean that there isn't any demand for them.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but have there been any decent JRPGs on the latest consoles recently? I mean, with Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Infinite Indiscovery, etc.,...isn't the Xbox 360 way more of a JRPG console than the PS3 is?
I'm being serious. It's possible that 40 JPRGs all came out for the Wii and the PS3, and I just never heard of them. But pretty much every recent major JRPG has come out on the Xbox 360 (though ToV is being ported over to the PS3, more than a year after it came out, I think...).
I just assumed that a lot fewer JRPGs were coming out. Or that they sucked.

That is true about the declining number of JRPGs. There are only, what, 7 or 8 JRPGs on the 360? I think that is still more than on the Wii or PS3, and the 360 isn't popular in Japan. The cost of development for the HD consoles is so high that a lot of the niche JRPG makers are still focusing on the PS2.
If you consider Valkyria Chronicles a JRPG, then yes, there has been at least 1 recently.
Wow. I could have sworn it was a strategy game set in wartorn not-Europe.
I mean, the complaint basically seems to be, "The Xbox 360 doesn't have the diversity and quantity of titles of the PS2."
Well, of course it doesn't! That's because you're counting the PS2 in its entire history, and because for a very long time, Sony was the licensing god (and to some extent, they still are). The PS2's range of titles was much smaller when it was 3 years old as well (though I can't say how it compared to the Xbox 360--I'll assume it was bigger, since games were cheaper/quicker to produce back then in many respects).

It's a LOT more. Seriously, I'm shocked that the PS3 has been out for +2 years and we're still waiting for Final Fantasy XIII. Especially given how early they announced the game. The only way I can explain it is that JRPGs just aren't being churned out like they used to, and that Sony dropped the freaking ball.
PS2 has been out quite a bit longer than the 360, remember. Judging purely on quantity and not proportions is ridiculous.

Almost all of the games you've mentioned came out near the end of the last generation and the start of this one. Okami, God Hand, FFXII were all the the "last generation" of games to come out for the PS2. I know that games are still coming out for it, but they were created at a point when the PS2 was tapped to it's "fullest potential".
Besides that, as much as I love Okami and God Hand, they both tanked hard. Why would companies want to make more games like them, considering they're financially proven failures. Okami is an especially sad tale. I like it more than any Zelda game.
Regardless, I think you would have more of an argument if we were in the transitioning stage between the 360/PS3 and their successors. Since we're not there yet, I don't think your argument holds a lot of weight.
As far as JRPGs go, play Tales of Vesperia. It's the best JRPG offering on the 360 and it's a good game for sure. JRPGs in general have just been played out. The problem with the genre is the lack of originality. You can only rehash the JRPG story template (and face it, most JRPGs follow one) before it gets old. I used to love JRPGs, but they just lost their magic so to speak. How many times can one save the world before they just don't care?

I guess it depends on what you consider making a game a JRPG. Its japanese developed game with an anime-based art-style in which you use gold and experience to level up classes and items. There is also a pig with wings.
Yeah, there aren't any story line decisions, but even if its an J Strategy or Tactical RPG, its still under the JRPG umbrella.

yeah well the copyright notice also said that XBOX 360 SUCKS DIX LOL
On a side note, I will be down for the slim model if they bundle it with FF13. I'll shift the Thick PS3 to the living room as a Blu Ray Player, and keep the slim in the gaming room.
Regardless of whether it is real or not, I hope the PS3 gets a substantial price drop soon. The Demon's Souls thread and Valkyria Chronicles anime tempt me so much.
I think part of the problem with the total lack of JRPGs on the newer consoles is the DS.
Seriously. with the exception of a slim few, ALL of the good JRPGs have been coming out on the DS for the last few years. I am guessing the development costs have alot to do with that, but I have no idea really.
All I know is that I have a backlog of RPGs on my DS that I dont even want to think about how long it will take to finish. Meanwhile, the only good ones Ive played on the newer systems have been Lost Odyssey, Vesperia, Valkyria Chronicles, and Eternal Sonata wasnt bad either.

I only brought up the 360 in particular because Scarab made a point to say that it has a diverse array of games and characterizations otherwise are unfounded. For the most part he's right, and I also agree that this generation in general is crap so far for certain genres, and the 360 isn't really any better or worse in that regard.
That said, I'm going to wait and see if the 360 gets 6 different RE games before I say it's in the same league as last generation.

I don't see that happening. Which is precisely why I bought a backwards compatible PS3 when PS2 #4 was on its last legs. Oh, and I've heard there are some games exclusively for it as well, but that's neither here nor there.
But, me personally--I don't need a bunch of RE titles to make me happy. Just one or two will do.

Why are you posting this shit in the "My console can beat up your console" thread. And at the bottom of the page no less.
For shame.
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)

Seriously. with the exception of a slim few, ALL of the good JRPGs have been coming out on the DS for the last few years.
