I bought my brother a zune for christmas a few years ago. He loves it. He couldn't read the text on the ipod so it was hard for him to navigate and stuff, but the zune text can get really big and you see large album pictures which helps out a lot.

    it seems pretty nice, actually

I have a really hard time seeing how anyone can talk shit about zunes at this point.

They're awfully good looking, the software is attractive, concise, while still boasting some nice features.

The Zune Pass really is a perfect concept for me, and though I pay in total about thirty bucks a month for the total of my microsoft subscriptions, that includes playing games online, which I do every day, the party system on my xbox which I use everyday, and eighteen gigs of music that I use everyday

And yes I technically do use that much because I have it shuffle through the whole thing and there are maybe a hundred or less songs I don't know every word to.

    It's a rockin' thing.

Didn't iTunes do away with its drm?

If so, yes you can totally take music you bought from the itunes store and put it on your zune.

yeah, but they ended up taking down some of their stuff, so there is the very slight chance that if you bought something that wasn't itunes plus, you couldn't get the itunes plus version of it and thus be unable to transfer it over

of course that's a pretty unlikely scenario but whatever

Won't the whole burning to a CD and then importing thing still work? And always work forever?

I mean it's an inconvenience sure, but CDs are cheaper than rebuying the music?

    Yes this will always work

Just make sure you edit your burn settings so it doesn't automatically add 2 seconds to each song

Pisses me off when it does it to an album that's got a lot of transitions

I really don't dislike the Zune

There seems to be some visceral reaction to not owning the music you're listening to as well as subscription models in general. For me, I like the Zune Pass a lot, but I also still buy CDs and consider those my collection. I use the subscription to be able to listen to a lot of music without paying ~$15 per album. Some of it I'm not sure I'd actually buy; often I make a playlist that incorporates my own collection as well as some downloaded stuff, and will enjoy it for about a month. After that, I'll change it up. I'll also get inspired to actually purchase the few albums I liked, but I often had to sort through a lot of mediocre stuff to find them.

So I think it works out well, but it doesn't replace having a collection, and you have to be okay with a long-term payment/value instead of thinking about it as a monthly charge.

As a last note, I find that I'm never out of new things to listen to, because new music is always coming out, or I hear about a new genre I've never checked out before. Tastes evolve over time, music comes and goes, but it's good to have a limited collections of music on hard copy you will never get tired of.

I think Microsoft in general hasn't understood all these issues, at least in promoting the service. I think if Apple offered it people would go nuts, for some reason.

It's not that Zune isn't a good product, it's just Ipod rules like 89.7% of the marketplace, and when people around you are talking about how much they love their Ipods and how great they are, you have to say that you own a.... a Zune....

Suddenly you're the guy who goes to the Star Wars convention dressed as Mr. Spock.
