If you thought Underground 2 was halfway decent, then by all means enjoy American Wasteland, Project 8 and Proving Ground. They're all dirt-cheap now.

Project 8 didn't really have any of the Jackass garbage in there - it's the best of the post THUG entries (though that's not a tough list to top) and easily stands among the best in the series.
If this were a universe in which Skate. did not exist, then I would recommend it as the best of the genre.
Project 8 was admittedly better than AW but there was still too much clutter in the game and the level design wasn't the best. I felt claustrophobic while playing it, which is a weird feeling for a game to create.
How exactly are the later games set up, challengewise? The first three THPSs had the goals all open at once, but a time limit on the stages. THUG1 had the challenges broken out into discrete sections that you had to talk to someone to access, and you could only do one thing at once. THUG2 was sort of a hybrid, you could do anything freely but there was no time limit (actually, now that I think about it it had a pretty much complete THPS-style mode as well, which worked exactly like the older games). I never played THPS4.

They weren't THPS4, essentially...

Alas...
Which model did the later games take after?
Whoa
First, go back and play THPS4. It is God-king of the series.
Secondly, they pretty much follow the setup of THUG2.
