Hi there,

I am thinking of studying Chinese in China. Hopefully by doing so, I can learn the language better and quicker. I think Chinese can ultimately make my career looks brighter.

If you guys know any good Chinese language programs, please do let me know.

Appreciate that.

Rosetta stone is good. A couple good free websites for studying are http://www.nciku.com/ and http://www.wordchamp.com.

Do you know which dialect you're planning on? One of the posters here, Loren Michael, is actually in Beijing doing just this.

There's little reason not to pick standard Mandarin. If he's dead set on making a career in Hong Kong then maybe Cantonese would work as well or better, and any other dialect would be crazy.

you don't need to go to china. ESPECIALLY if you don't know any. If you know none, and you go, you're just worse off unless you're planning on staying for at least 6 months.

You'll get way more out of a learning trip if u have SOME background to build on

Yeah, I'm assuming you're going there for a long period of time. However I have to disagree with Sam, we have people in our class that went there with nothing but some basics and a phrase books for a couple months and came back much more knowledgeable than us for the first few months of school. So it can certainly be helpful. Though if you want to be actually proficient you're going to need to be there for a year minimum like he said.

Chinese pod is also pretty decent. I believe it has a free section and a pay section for downloading lessons. An associate provost who has been dealing with expanding our school's Chinese program has learned most of her conversational Mandarin through this. I don't think it helps with characters too much.

Oh yeah, Chiense Pod is pretty great for speaking. We usually study a couple of those a week.
