New Mass Effect 2 website.
Age verification required.

FAQ list stolen directly from the website:
1.0 Is Commander Shepard Alive?

Commander Shepard is the main playable character in Mass Effect 2, but Shepard’s death is a central theme in the story, especially since the Commander is preparing for what can only be described as a suicide mission.

1.1: How will our saved games from Mass Effect 1 work for Mass Effect 2?

If you finished Mass Effect 1 and continue from your savegame, you will see the consequences of your decisions from the first moments of Mass Effect 2. And throughout the game you will see the results of choices you made in Mass Effect 1, both large and small.

1.2: What if I didn’t play Mass Effect 1, or didn’t keep my savegame?

Mass Effect 2 starts with an introduction sequence which, in combination with interactive decisions made by the player, introduces new players to the storyline and establishes a “canon” backstory.

1.3: What DRM will you use for Mass Effect 2?

We will make an announcement about DRM at a later date.

1.4: What if I have multiple saved games?

You will be asked to pick a specific save game to import each time you start a new game of ME2.

1.5: If a character died in Mass Effect 1 will they come back in Mass Effect 2?

No – they are dead!

1.6: What characters from Mass Effect 1 will come back for Mass Effect 2?

If you watch the various trailers and videos we have and will be releasing, you will start to see some familiar faces that are returning for the second game.

1.7: What improvements or advancements have been made for Mass Effect 2?

Mass Effect 2 incorporates improvements to nearly every aspect of the game, in areas such as combat and AI, space exploration, and technical systems such as area transitions, frame rates, and texture loading. All of these are incorporated into the overall game design, including a new planetary exploration vehicle.

1.8: Will the romances from Mass Effect 1 continue in Mass Effect 2?

Part of telling a great action / adventure story is having a love interest to give deeper meaning and character development to the relationships. So much like in the original Mass Effect, you will be able to develop relationships into love interests over the course of the game.

1.9: Will there be new romances to pursue?

Yes. You may see an appearance of your love interest from Mass Effect 1, and there will be completely new characters that can be developed into the love interest for Mass Effect 2.

1.10: Is combat going to be changed at all?

The overall concept of combat is very much the same, but every aspect has been polished and improved. You still command a squad of 3 characters with incredible special abilities. But many improvements have been made to give you better real-time tactical control of your squad as well as making the shooting controls much more fluid and precise. Location-based damage (head shots and blasting pieces off enemies), new physics-based powers, and a new cover system make combat much more spectacular and intense.

1.11: Will there be any new weapons in Mass Effect 2?

Yes! Players will have a large variety of new weapons to use including a new system of Heavy Weapons.

1.12: Will there be hand to hand combat in Mass Effect 2?

Commander Shepard will have melee attacks he can use against enemies that get too close.

1.13: Is Mass Effect 2 still coming for the 360 first or will it come out for the PC at the same time?

We will release details about release timing at a later date.

1.14: Will there be a PS3 version of Mass Effect 1 and 2?

Mass Effect 2 is planned for the PC and Xbox 360.

1.15: Will there be any new biotic, tech, or soldier abilities in Mass Effect 2?

Absolutely – stay tuned for more videos, screens and features that will reveal some of those.

1.16: Will the Normandy return in Mass Effect 2?

The Normandy plays a major role in Mass Effect 2.

Here's the old OP.
Going to reserve this space for ME2 info. Relevant ME1 info added as needed.

Problems with Therum? Solution in the spoiler.
Hey! Therum is missing textures!

A PC game with bugs? That's unpossible!

Sadly, many have had issues with the PC version of the game. Obviously, make sure you have the latest drivers available. And while we're happy to help in this thread, contacting 'official' support personnel may have better results.

Here is a link to a list of issues the Steam version may have in general.

But this seems to work best for the Therum issue:
The solution is usually quite simple - without doing anything else after landing on Therum - save your game, exit, go to the Steam\steamapps\common\mass effect\Binaries folder, and run the MassEffectConfig.exe

(if you are running Vista you will first have to right click on this file, and have it run in XP compatibility mode)

Once you run the config file, click on the Repair option, and then click on "Delete Local Shader Cache Files".

Restart the last saved game on Therum, and it should work.

Don't try to manually delete the shader cache files - you shouldn't have to if you use the config tool.
If you find you'd rather delete the files manually, you might have to do it more than once before success.

As of Feb. 11, there hasn't been a patch released to deal with this, though a patch is mentioned as coming soon (we don't know when yet). This may address the issue once and for all.

E3 is tomorrow. More info about ME2 to come!

You know, I want more living, breathing things to shoot. ME1 had tons of anti-personnel bullets, and about 10 things to use them on.
Where's this "Shepard's Dead" stuff come from? At least in the ending I had, he was very obviously alive, since he spoke to Udina and nominated Anderson for Councilman and stuff. Am I missing something somewhere?

Ok so I'm maybe 2 hours into the 360 version of the game, a friend of mine says he has a PC version he doesn't want. Is the PC version significantly improved that I'd want to just scratch the last 2 hours of 360 play and play the PC version instead? Yes I have a high end PC capable of handling the game at max details.

I would say so, yea. The tactical pause menu, from what I've heard is much better, as is the inventory menu.

Yeah, the PC version has a lot of interface improvements, but still on many levels (especially the inventory) feels console-y. It's not possible to select multiple items to delete/sell, for example. Combat is really nice, though -- I like the interface they did for that.

PC version locks and freezes way too much though. I picked it up on Steam and after the most recent patch I'm still having nothing but problems. Doesn't look as good on my 360, but at least I don't have to deal with freezes.

Still haven't managed to beat this game, but I do enjoy what I have gone through though.

I played through the entire game on the pc and didn't have a single crash so it may be subjective on the crashing and freezing point. This was on Vista 64bit that has issues with damn near anything. I'm sure it depends on the pc you are using to play the game but I think it looks better on pc than 360, but tht is also subjective.

If you have a decent enough pc you should try it out for the controls alone.

I'm pretty sure that that was a joke.

I just watched that new trailer, are we sure that
the Normandy gets destroyed? I definitely saw a damaged/destroyed spaceship, but it didn't really seem much like the Normandy to me. Except that one explosion near the map.

I think it was a shot at getting him to confirm or deny it so people have an answer.

I think what I'm hoping for most in ME2 is an inventory system that makes sense. I doubt that my Shepard will want to walk around with hundreds of weapons and items, I would love to see a system where you can stockpile stuff on the Normandy and access it when on the ship but you can only take so much with you when you are ashore. I also think that it would be nice to have the inventory make spatial sense. Where is the party keeping all these item when wandering around on away missions? Having the ability to look at and take weapons from enemies would still be an option, but having a limit to what you can carry would add some realism. Once you head back to the Normandy you can always have a list of items you found on the planet, and have them brought aboard and put into your cache of goods.

In the same vein it would be neat to have the four weapon slots changed slightly from ME1. I would like to see the hip holster exclusively for the pistol, but have the other three spots open, so I can carry two sniper rifles and another pistol or whatever other combination floats my boat.

Just some random wish list type stuff I think the people at Bioware have probably thought about before I even finished playing the first game.

Edit: about the ship in the trailer :
Now that I pay attention to the trailer it looks like the Normandy to me. A figure is walking from the lower deck, up the stairs, past the navigation console to the pilot, and communication chairs at the front of the ship. So my guess is that it's either the Normandy or a ship of the same class.

    Well,
the first bit looks like it's just outside the elevator, at the double curved stairs. Then the player character goes up, and the door to the main deck opens (with all the air rushing out and stuff), and the next bit is along the rows of computer consoles leading to the bridge/pilot area. The final portion panning up looks like the player is standing on the bridge itself.

The whole thing looked like the Normandy, or at least a ship the same class as the Normandy. Don't think any others were built (Normandy was a pathfinder, right?) but hey.

That's all off of memory, so I could be wrong in the sequence, although I do distinctively remember seeing those segments.

Well I suppose since it's a scifi universe, your inventory full of loot is inside this mass displacing subspace universe? Kinda like how Transformers change size on the cartoon show? Ya know, Megatron transforms from a giant robot into this little Walther pistol that can be held and fired by other transformers?

Going by what's been said and seen, I think it has to be the Normandy, as it was a prototype, and the Admiral who makes an inspection specifically comments on the non-standard internal layout. More stealth-capable ships may be/have been made, but with a new design based on lessons learned from the Normandy.

I'm assuming that the Normandy is going to be part of the opening 'act', but get destroyed early in the game (during the equivalent of the Eden Prime stage). Then you'll hopefully get a new ship with an improved layout (for bonus points, the disaster can happen while Shepard is stuck in the elevator, and powerless to act)

And beat my second playthrough in under 4 hours. I really should have cranked the difficulty to hardcore.

My sniper character still just demolishes shit. I can pretty much use my sniper rifle as a shotgun now, the no-scope accuracy is retarded - to the point that it is more accurate unscoped than my assault rifle. 2x kinetic X upgrades and a high explosive rnd X ammo and while it overheats with 1 shot, also kills mans and their nearby buddies in one blast. I thought of doing a biotic playthrough but ffffff I really don't feel like starting off all over again.

I also really should pay attention to my money, as I'd just sell off everything but what I used, I realised I had capped out at 9,999,999 credits. All those chumpchange sidequests here is ur rewrd i hope u liek ur 500 creds : )))))))))) and I'm just thinking bitch don't insult me, my gun running business makes me 30k+ a unit

edit: and maybe we'll get a ship that doesn't have a fucking elevator for no reason that we have to go to every time we want to talk to half the crew. I stopped bothering to go "downstairs" for pretty much the entire game after I got tired of riding the Alliances slowest elevator ever.

Yeah getting some Halo style difficulty would be awesome, where the gameplay totally changes for Legendary/Insanity difficulty. A lot of games seem to be doing that lately (Crysis is another example, completely different game on Delta difficulty) and I'm pleased with that development.

Enemies that take cover and shoot over it, having the big heavy melee types sneak around to ambush you or rushing you while their buddies provide massive cover fire, etc. A much better cover system would make this absolutely amazing, where you could pause the game and set up an awesome pop-up sniper shot with VATS-esque targeting.
