Because Lawsuits Are Fun: Playstation 3 Slim Pictures
Taiwanese lawyers, Li Mo & Associates, sent a cease & desist order to Kotaku for uploading images of the PLAYSTATION 3 "Slim", potentially giving credence to the validity of the images as the e-mail cited the images as "trade secrets".
Having never heard of the Streisand Effect, the overzealous attorneys have more or less guaranteed the spread of these images. Had it not been for this development, I'd have not otherwise bothered to repost them right here for posterity.
Whatever the case may be, I have my fingers crossed and look forward to acquiring one of these units if and when they do become available.
I bet it's the knockoff company pissed that their knockoff is getting publicity and scared Sony might find out.
That's where I'd put my money.
My understanding is that those groups that would make a knockoff would avoid actually using any logos or names associated with the genuine product. Meanwhile these factory shots include box art that has Sony, Playstation Network, etc.
I'm still a bit bummed that they never went with the boomerang controller. Made the right size, I think it could have worked out nicely.
I thought it looked awkward -- it looked like it would be hard to hold it without having your thumbs on the sticks at an angle, making it difficult to orient and also harder to press the face buttons.
That's what made me think that it might be some sort of cruddy knockoff, given the fact that the C&C came from CHINA, of all places.
Not implausible, since the PS3 parts are manufacturered there. I think it's already been pointed out that the current manufacturer of the PS3 case is Chinese. I can't really think of any prior example where the knockoff manufacturer has sent a C&D. Certainly there is the possibility that the C&D is fraudulent, and only exists to lend credability to the photos.
Sony's denials prove nothing either way, as they've been very consistent in denying products right up until they show up in stores.
I wouldn't be too surprised this is real, but I also think the case part being shown is the TOP half, and not the entire thing (note there's no chrome ledge in front of the disc slot, that'd be on the lower case part). It's hard to distinguish the actual volume from the supposed new product box. I'm very skeptical they can fit everything (including the now-mandatory HDD) into that amount of space.
The slim PS2 lost a lot of weight by putting the power supply offboard (up until recently), and ditching the volume intended for the HDD and net adapter. The SCPH-9000 really is quite an amazing example of product refinement (compared to the original launch PS2, you'd think it was some sort of gatchapon toy, and not an actual working product), but I'd be quite astonished that Sony could jump straight to that level of refinement. They're clever, but let's face it, their track record with the PS3 (and other products) doesn't paint them as being that smart.
Either way, it's really not impacting my purchasing decisions any - but I could see why it would affect people currently on the fence, causing them to delay a new PS3 purchase in order to get the new model. I've already got a PS3, I'm not in the market for a new one, thin or not.

Leaning towards legit.
True, but I still can't believe something as cheap-looking as that is an official product. How many of these would also hit with a C&D? I'm still guessing it's a knock-off company and they're trying to fly under Sony's radar because they're really crossing some lines.
Just thinking out loud: This isn't a C&D on the makers of the machine. It's a C&D on news sources like Kotaku, telling them to stop posting images. So while it may be possible that a Chinese knockoff company went through the trouble to use Sony brand names and images as well as promise BluRay and HDD support in their knockoff and then hire lawyers to C&D a website for posting an image of it, it's also possible that this is a machine that is being built where Sony builds PS3s and the manufacturer doesn't want to get in shit for leaked photos of something they're contracted with Sony to keep under wraps.
It just seems to me that a knockoff company wouldn't want to go through the trouble and risk of doing something like this to rip off Sony brand names/images when they could largely avoid serious problems and hiring counsel just by using confusing names like "PZ3" or whatever.
Even so I still don't quite believe that there's a legit PS3 slim 'in the works' just yet. Not quite yet.

Dunno why I didn't think of this, but this could all be sorted out simply by looking at who exactly the C&D was from. I mean, was it a C&D on behalf of Sony? If not, that's pretty clear evidence that it's not legit...as you can't really 'forge' C&D's on behalf of other companies without getting fucked legally.

Yeah, if it's a legal firm who are associated with Sony or one of their manufacturers at all, then yeah, it's legit.
It just doesn't seem right. The font is different, but that's the only thing that seems to be a difference in title to the standard PS3 (no 'PS3 slim' title or whatever). The device appears to be of a cheap quality. That's why I'm still not convinced it's a genuine product.
But then this is Sony, so they could well have decided that the thing to turn their fortunes (ho ho, pun) around is a smaller, cheaper-looking (but more expensive) model of thir George Foreman-styled behemoth.
Is it also possible the C&D is Sony saying "We need to C&D anything like this so if we ever have to C&D the real thing, it won't be a dead giveaway that we're working on this?"

I don't understand the "cheap quality" comments. I mean, it's a Sony!
...ba dum dum...
Seriously, what about the photos makes it look "cheap"? The box looks just about the way I'd expect it to, and changing the font I consider inconclusive at best. The Spiderman font was a way of associating the product with a (at the time) new movie that you'd probably want to buy the PS3 to watch it on Blu-Ray, but now, the movies are old news. In my opinion, disassociating the product with the "old" movies by changing the font to something more neutral isn't hard to believe.
The top appears to be matte, but I don't think that makes it look cheap, so much as fix one of the biggest problems with the PS3's finish. The piano-black gloss finish they keep using looks great - in a dust-free environment, when handled with white cotton gloves. In day to day practice, it's impractical as hell and looks crappy once it's collected even a moderate amount of dust and fingerprints that come with careful handling. I don't see that as cheap, more than pragmatic.
Those are the only two things I could think of that contribute to any value judgement on the quality, but I really think the photos are too grainy, too small, and too hard to draw any final conclusions on. I just found it surprising that "looks cheap" is the comment that seems to be repeated (not just here, but on the blogs the photos were posted on). Did people have a similiar reaction to the PS2 slim? (My first reaction to that was "tiny, but how the hell are you supposed to play Final Fantasy Online on that... oh, you aren't").

I don't see what's so hard to believe about this. For one, the box looks incredibly legit. Chinese knockoffs never actually use actual brand names. This one has used a lot. Second, the C&D came from the company that actually assembles PS3s. Three, the case is in pieces and looks low quality likely because it was part of a test run to test and calibrate their machines. You go as cheap as possible with those. Finally, when have you ever heard of a Chinese knockoff manufacturer issuing a cease and desist, especially to a media outlet? It just doesn't make sense that they would do that.
As for the "PS3" font? I would think that they're switching to that to align the PS3 more along with the PS2. The logo looks really similar to the PS2 logo, so I'd bet that's what they're doing.
I'm almost willing to throw out a cock eating bet that it's real.

That's why most PS3 owners buy a Wii or 2 to collect up all the dust in the room. That's the real reason behind it's high sales.

As far as it looking cheap it is probably a development PD build, not a product that would ship. I worked at (censored) in a past life and all of the products we worked on looked nothing like the shipping products. Cheap plastics, missing logos, etc. Shit the first (censored) I saw weighed 30 pounds and was encased in hardware store style plexiglass. Once the design is finalized the send it to the manufacturers who then make Development staged builds. At (censored) we called them DVTs. There are several of these before a product goes to ship.
I had a change of heart and remembered all my NDA's and censored the company and product names, lets just say it's a big computer company, and maybe you've heard of their phones.

Thank you. it's like most people have no clue that if that pic was legit, that is NOT the final build at all.

This world of hurt usually washes right off of the press, because they are not signatories to most NDAs.
Kotaku somehow getting a photo of the device and its packaging? Yeah, they have no case.

Cause that is ugly as hell.
It's real.
Magic begins around 2:15
Newsflash, the PS3 is ugly. This is just a slimmer version of it.
An ugly fat chick who loses weight is still ugly. Same thing here.
The Xbox 360 looks like a toy beside it.
You may have put your finger on something, there.
Oh god.
Remember when the controllers looked like bananas.

Any reason given why they are involved and not, I don't know, Sony?
Wonder if it's actually another PS3 knockoff that they don't want Sony to know about.
Eh, even if it is a slim PS3, doesn't affect me any.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do slap Blu-Ray in a fake. That linked one above is allegedly going for $120-$150.
