I have no idea if there is another thread that I should be posting in or not, but it seems like a kind of odd question to ask so here goes.
My poops are pretty large (about 12-16 inches long approx.) which seems really long to me. I know that the smaller your poops are the more efficiently your body is working, and that's why I'm concerned. I go to the bathroom about once every other day, and I was of the opinion that it was healthier to go once a day.
I know that going to the doctor is always a better option, but I don't want to pay the co-pay to ask a question like this.
I should say that I've been like this for years now, and I don't feel sick or anything. I was just wondering if this was an ominous sign or I should change my diet.

Poop size is less important than consistancy. If your poops are monolithic, it means they're probably firm, which is a sign of a good diet.

* Type 1: Separate hard lumps, like nuts (hard to pass)
* Type 2: Sausage-shaped, but lumpy
* Type 3: Like a sausage but with cracks on its surface
* Type 4: Like a sausage or snake, smooth and soft
* Type 5: Soft blobs with clear cut edges (passed easily)
* Type 6: Fluffy pieces with ragged edges, a mushy stool
* Type 7: Entirely liquid
Types 1 and 2 indicate constipation, with 3 and 4 being the "ideal stools" especially the latter, as they are the easiest to pass, and 5–7 being further tending towards diarrhea or urgency
Soft is better, it puts less strain on the digestive tract and anus, and keeps fecal matter from compacting in the colon. The main thing as far as softness goes is that if you find yourself pushing a lot or you take a while to go to the bathroom, it's probably too firm. Fiber is the main nutrient for digestion, so stepping up your fiber intake a bit will help. It really doesn't take much, just a salad each day can help plenty.
As far as your schedule, part of that is just what your body is used to. It is technically better to go once or twice a day, but every other day isn't any sign of trouble. I believe the general thought is that 3 days is the trouble spot: less is fine, though could maybe be better, more is when you need to start looking carefully at your diet. If you do decide to have more fiber, you might start going more often, or you might not.
Edit: your body is pretty good at telling you there's a problem. If you feel uncomfortable or painful passing stool, you could go for a better diet.
See the problem area for the diet part is that I recently became a (loose) vegetarian. I know that it is in the realm of possibilities to still not be getting enough fiber in my diet, but my girlfriend (who is the most knowledgable strict vegetarian I know) has been helping me watch everything I eat, and I get as much fiber that's reccomended for my body index.
I should add that I have a syndrome known as Nail Patella Syndrome. I have no idea if this can have an affect on how I poop.

Eat apricots.
Other than fiber supplements or just eating foods with more fiber in them and trying for once a day, if there's no discomfort or bleeding or anything like that, I would just hang onto the question for later and ask it at your next physical when you're paying the copay anyway.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
as a child (read: 17) i was once constipated for 2 and 1/2 weeks.
the way le poop had formed in my bowels made it near impossible to pass. and i was terrified. i won't get into my toilet-fear/intestines-falling-out-fear, but it made me just avoid the toilet as a whole during that.
apparently i also had a huge vitamin deficiency. at the 2 week mark i started shaking violently all the time.
anyway, that was a gross story. my point is that vitamins can help regularity/consistency, if you're worried about it. it helped me quite a bit, just to get "back on track" in regularity for a while. regularity is something most people take for granted.
If every couple days is normal and you don't feel ill or bloated, then chances are you're okay. What's also important is how hard you have to try (if you're always making fffffuuuuu faces then you're not good) and how long it takes (probably shouldn't have time to read anything more than 250 words).
A. I'm sure that fiber supplements aren't out of the question. We're not talking hardcore vegan here or anything.
B. I'm 5'8", 125.5 lbs. (I know I'm very thin, but that is normal for me. PM me if you are really interested why I suppose.)
C. I don't usually struggle to push them out. They actually come out very easy, and takes me only 5-10 minutes to poop out.
It seems as though from your reactions that I'm fine, and more fiber isn't a bad idea. I'm sure I could be drinking more liquids too. Thanks for the advice. I was just kind wondering if I was like destroying my colon or anything.
More fiber, stay hydrated. But if you see blood, you want to get it checked out. Out of curiosity, is this a recent development, or has it been this way for a while?

It's been this way for a while now. 4-5 years I'd say.
I just asked a colorectal nurse. She believes your poops are healthy poops. As long as it's not TOO hard and you're not struggling to push it out, you should not worry. A single long piece of poop is a good piece of poop.
She also gave you a golf clap for it.
She then went on to say that you're scarily skinny. I apologize for her being so mean.
I always feel epic whenever I get a poop that long (not that often). Feels like my entire bowel is completely empty, it's wonderful.
Adjusting fiber/fluids is an overreaction if you are not straining or having consistency issues. I wouldn't worry about it. If it ain't broke, why fix it?
I can try to find the information again, but it's buried somewhere (probably in PubMed next to a Bristol stool chart): anywhere between 3 and 30 poops per week is considered healthy, with around 1 per day considered the most normal.
...This reminds of some other thing I found on PubMed relating to foods that increase flatulence and decrease smells and such.
...Actually, I think it was for another thread here about a roomate who had foul smelling trips to the bathroom.
[edit]Turns out I was remembering this post, which doesn't have the fancy 'poops per week' information, unfortunately.[/edit]

Well that sounds promising coming from someone who knows quite a bit about it.
haha thankyou thankyou
Yes I am. I do have a disorder that has an affect on my whole skeletal structure, and my body index.

I never heard nothing like that before. You sure that is true?
I think it is just a function of how long you are waiting to go. You could probably just make yourself go every day if you wanted.
but they're listening to every word I say

Are your poops solidish and brownish?
Yes my poops are usually VERY solid. I usually wouldn't have to wipe if I weren't worried about it. and a brownish color.
Weird... but probably normal. Might you be getting enough fluids?
wait... i thought people say sort of soft is good

hey! it's not the size that matters!

As long as you're not straining for minutes on end to birth that sucker, you're probably fine.
Thank you, Rubacava!
You have a gift, my friend.
i have beat that, i am almost certain.

As long as it doesn't hurt when you poop and no blood is present, you should be fine.

haha yea that's actually a real life picture of me.
no it's called nail patella syndrome. it's pretty rare and has an affect on my whole body.
