You know, they could easily make the duplicates have other stats on them.
Also, there are some screen floating around about a end-game trading period but those could easily be 'shops. Would make sense if they attach stats to weapons, though.
The original rewarded you for playing more. Which is a slap in the face for the casual guy. "You can only play 1 round a night? Good luck getting a blutsauger"
This is new system is even worse:
"Whats that Jening? You have 800 hours as spy, and a total of 10 hours as every other class combined? Heres a flare gun. You wont be getting the spy acheivements any time soon"
What's with all this bullshit about achievements? Aside from some medic bullshit, most of the achievements aren't some crazy impossible shit that you have to do.
Also the unlock system sucked for new players, or players like me who took a long break from the game. Getting back from the game and having a list of 60+ achievements to get to have all the shiny items felt like a chore more than anything else.
It's pretty clearly valve intends that we not get these things right away; the way that they refer to them as 'rewards', the fact that they put them into the unlock system to begin with, etc. And they're supposed to be sidegrades, meaning they're not essential; in an ideal world I think valve's idea is that you play the game and occasionally get a shiny thing. As such I think this is the closest we'll get to that without simply tying the things to your playtime.
Would I like to have them right off the bat? Yes. But using a bit of logic it's fairly obvious that that will not happen, period; and I'm content with this system. I don't mind having to screw around for a bit before I get my new toys; I have the new maps to play on in the meantime.
ed: just heard the suspensful music from "meet the spy" on the titlescreen!
I hope all your fags who cried over having to get achievements to unlock the weapons are happy. Because this new system for unlocking is the worst thing ever.
The worst thing ever is your fucking face
Also the best way is to give us all sidegrades from the get-go, but I won't see how this weapon "pickup" feature will work for quite a few months

People will still go after the achievements for fun.
Jumping through hoops to get unlocks was annoying and dumb.
This new system is better, but not much.
Really, they should just give all the players the unlocks.
I think it's still more fun having to unlock them than just getting the new weapons, even if the system is dumb.
It is pretty nice to know when you'll be getting a new item, yeah.
This.
You can get more excited knowing you only have 1 achievement left until that Ubersaw, and you can modify your play style to accomplish certain achievements which can sometimes be out of the way from normal play.
And why the fuck are people bitching about WoW? WoW didn't invent the random number generator and it didn't invent random drops. Bitch about final fantasy if you must.

Maybe you can trade them with your friends or some shit.

It's true, and it makes them better, imho, as you have no reason to grind them out or go on an achievement whore server.
Jumping through hoops to get unlocks was annoying and dumb.
It depended on the specifics. I didn't find some classes bad, but some were a pain.
This new system is better, but not much.
No, it's terrible. I've gotten one unlock in the time it took other people to get SIX, and it was the flare gun, which:
a. isn't good (IMHO, and esp. with Jarate and the air blast being hard counters to it.)
b. I know isn't good because I've had the bloody thing for months.
Really, they should just give all the players the unlocks.
I like the idea of striving towards something, just so long as I know how to get it, personally, but an unlocker utility would be good too for people who don't.
Here's a better system than either one:
You accumulate unlock points for doing well, plus a random amount at the end of each round. You get gigantic bonuses if you haven't unlocked something for a long time in terms of calendar days. When you hit each 25% towards an unlock, the game tells you. There's also a progress bar in the achievement menu. When you hit enough for an unlock, it gives you a random weapon (that you don't have already), with a strong weight for whatever class you play the most.
It's:
- Fair to casuals and hardcore players alike. Hardcore players get stuff first, casual players get stuff in less in-game time.
- Has a random element, but tries to give you stuff you like.
- You can affect the outcome.
I'm sure there are a few flaws with it, but I came up with this in the time it took to type this post, and it's certainly better than this stupid random bullshit.

So, I got the Cloak and Dagger. It's awesome for my playstyle. You don't have the same mobility as regular cloak, so it takes a bit more time to get behind enemy lines. Once you're there, though, you can hang out pretty much as long as you'd like. As an experiment on hoodoo, I just stood cloaked in the middle of the final cap point (i was on offense) to see how long I could stand there. Turns out, it's a long long time. I finally lost patience, backstabbed Kimchi and sapped Ginger's port entrance. Then I hung out in the pit for a while. I will probably die a lot less, but accomplish much less as well as I won't want to leave the safety of my cloak.
I really want to try the dead ringer though, I heard it's terrible.
Edit: I backstabbed a sniper who had Razorback, it just absorbs a backstab and prevents you from stabbing again for a second or two. It does no actual damage to spies, other than hurt pride since it's really obvious.
I'm pretty sure that the old weapons can still be gotten with achievements. I saw someone get Pyro Milestone 3 and he got the Axtinguisher at the same time.
edit: Also, I think it's kind of cool how we don't HAVE to play either spy or sniper to get the items. That way the server isn't as bad.
To be honest, there's no possible way that could have worked. How often do snipers fight close enough to be able to grab the other's dropped reward gun after killing him?
edit: I would love to see a sniper traversing the entire length of the bridge and enemy base in 2fort just to get to the battlements for a dropped pee jar

Cloak and Dagger sounds great and useful. Dead Ringer sounds near worthless.
I am doing something very, very wrong when I play spy. I like to think I am smart and I play pretty patiently but when I run up behind someone and look around to make sure it is safe, miss five backstabs and then get killed from behind I get pretty angry. Or when I am thinking I have the perfect disguise and a random bullet hits me and my cover is blown. I played a couple maps as spy and I don't think I got a single back stab.

The bottom-left makes me think it's a 'shop, though.
Edit: Hell, don't these things have item levels on them, anyway?

Why is steam telling me that tf2 is unavailable and that I should try again at another time?
The medic ones were kinda BS though
haha, "I have been shown who is the boss!"

Lame, but glad to hear that it is nothing serious then,
But for the few they just added it is not so hot.
But I don't care, snipers and spies are equally scummy and I enjoy their crybaby wah wah wah give me items tears.

Random is barf. I don't want to play WoW again...
Then everyone would stop bitching.

unfortunately I always ended up on a team that insisted on playing as all snipers and spies
the opposing team had no trouble choosing different classes
this would be cool

If it was possible, I'd be willing to trade them away.

Anyone have both?
