I... I really really fucking hate Rathalos and Rathian's stunned tail sweep now. I've been fighting Gold and Silver in the arena alot and everytime I try to cut their tail while they're flashed, their wagging tail does fucking TREMENDOUS damage. The worst part is that there's no indication that I'm being attacked, my health simply drops. It's only a matter of time before I die from one of those attacks :x

This happened to me a few times when I was trying to cut Rathalos tails with a Greatsword. It's easier to cut them off first then hit them with flash bombs!

That's killed me numerous times simply because you don't even get staggered or any other visual indication that you're being killed. And then they nudge you and you die without realizing you were already almost dead.
I typically bring a Paralyze Longsword (BOAT PADDLE!!!) or Shock Traps when I go for Rathalos/Rathian tails, especially at G-rank. They can't bat around their tail in Shock Traps or Paralyze status. A Paralyze Greatsword, Lance, or Gunlance probably would work just as well. The tail swatting around does a LOT of damage, far more than when they actively use the tail as a weapon.
to Hahnsoo: It's not so much that I find Plessy difficult, just long and tedious. It's a boring fight, which makes farming it an exercise in tedium.
I don't know... 10 minutes (with a sub-optimal setup, mind you) doesn't sound long and tedious to me, especially when using rank-appropriate equipment. When one starts thinking of 10 minute fights as long and tedious, I'd hate to think about soloing G-rank stuff (most of which will take more than 15 minutes per kill). Simply not liking Plessy is alright, but if I was going for a Lg Lobstershell, I'd be farming him AND sending Trenya out at the same time until I got all the Lobstershells that I needed, just to get it over with.
Also, G-rank Plessy has one and two hit kills, making him a bit more exciting. One mistake, and you're toast... keeps you honest and on the edge during the fight.
Well I'd love to hear how to get Plessy out of the water when he sits there ignoring you. I sometimes zone into his aread and he just sits there, slowly sinking to the bottom of the water, not responding to Sonic Bombs or anything. I often have to zone and and out until he pops up.
Bear in mind, I don't have a gunner equipment set, so maybe that's my problem. Perhaps I should build myself a decent gunner set and just save it for taking on Plessy, instead of relying on my trusty long swords.

Also, I thought lances weren't able to cut off tails?
Lances do impact and cut damage, so they can break shells/KO enemies as well as cutting tails.
Our very own Dyvion is pretty awesome at doing lance tail-cuts. Seen it with my own eyez.
Tail cuts yes... What's funny is I always go for the tail first, so I'm usually the one who gets the cut, heh. But not knockouts I wish lances did knockouts... I wouldn't ever use another weapon! But they're very good at knocking things over. Just get underneath the critter and block the stompy stomps and then poke at the legs until they fall over, then charge through!
I was just watching a Rathian fight on Justin.tv (Sanfutoshi, using a lance, man after my own heart) and the swooshy tail flapping just moves you around now, it doesn't do damage. Bonus.

He only does this if he's not angry and hasn't seen you yet. Either harvest a Frog or bring a Frog to the zone and use it at the fishing spot to draw him out if he does this. The Old Desert Plesioth doesn't do this so often. He sometimes leaves the zone, but he comes right back after a couple of minutes (not even that long, sometimes). Also, when he swims around the arena, you don't have to Sonic Bomb him with a bowgun or bow... you shoot him to get his attention (I generally use Normal 1s). It usually draws him into the "dive, then pop up and water beam" pattern.
As far as the Boat Paddle, I think the first one is created using Dragonwood and Dragonmoss, which is brought back by Trenya in the Pokke Farm from various locations. The Boat Paddle IS civilization. 'Nuff said.

That's probably the worst, topped only by having tails somehow clip through or above the map. I had a diablos tail that got stuck 5 feet above me on a wall once, and just today I had a naruga tail that somehow disappeared altogether.
Also, basarios is really starting to tick me off. That walking pinata refuses to drop any strong wings, no matter how many I wreck. This is like my coral cephalos fin escapades, all over again! :x
No. There are only two Yamatsukami quests in MHP2ndG/Unite as far as I know, the HR8 Urgent (which subsequently becomes an HR 9 quest once completed as an Urgent, although you can participate if you are HR7+) and the MHP2ndG Download Quest version (supposedly harder, although it seems about the same to me).

Very close to buying this, but another question - I read that you can't pause the game mid mission. Obviously if I'm gaming on the go, this could be an issue. Is there any way to pause the game? Like, putting it in standby mode or something? I'd hate to be nearly finished killing something huge when I need to get off the train and can't do anything except die because I've got to put the PSP away.

You can pause it in mid-mission, at any time. It's only on multiplayer missions (with actual other people... offline Gathering Hall missions count as solo missions) that you cannot pause during the mission, for obvious reasons ("Hey guys! Pausing it!" "No, you idiot, stop that!"). However, if you are running a multiplayer mission and you really need to leave, you can just put your PSP on standby. It will disconnect everyone from you, and you can attempt to complete the rest of the mission by yourself at a later point in time.
When running Gathering Hall missions solo and running Elder/Nekoht missions (the solo missions outside the gathering hall), you can just press Start and select Pause. Or just put your PSP on standby (which will also pause it).
Also, putting your psp in standby mode will automatically pause the game first, before going to sleep. A nice little feature that I believe wasn't in F2. Usually means you don't have to worry about turning it back on with a diablos charge too close to avoid.
And Pata, Khezu is just misunderstood. He just wanted to be your friend, and to have you give him a nice kiss. And pounce on top of you. And umm, use his veiny, extending protrusion at you--

Go to your Felyne Board, try to dismiss one of them, then change your mind when it asks you to confirm.
Hahaha
I've dismissed the completely before, but I never said no... that's hilarious.
bahahaha!
also, got up to HR8 now, but the quest set to get to HR9 is a bitch. I cannot solo some of these.
"Lavasioth Sighting!" - Lavasioth only can hipcheck to his right side. Most of the strategy for him (at least with mobile weapons) is to bait a hipcheck, run through his legs, and get to his left side, then hit him on his left leg as he's recovering. He doesn't often catch you (at least, like Plesioth). Or you can tank him with a Lance and stab him after he plinks off your shield with a fishy flop or fireball. With ranged weapons, just keep running clear around him and avoid fireballs and the fishy swim. In all cases, watch out for the raged "double/triple fishy swim".
"Under the Gaze of Heaven" - Same strategy to take out Shogun Ceanataur as before (hammer him, stab his legs, etc.), except there are two of them. If you can kill one or more upper rank Shoguns, you can kill this mission. Watch out for Terra's rear water beam attack... it's deadly, but it's also an opening.
"A King, Robed in Smoke" - Same strategy as usual to take out Rathalos, except in Old Volcano. Flash 'em, Trap 'em, Whack 'em on the head.
"The Eternal Majesty" - Same strategy as usual to take out Rathian, except in Old Jungle (ugh... my least favorite zone). Flash 'em, Trap 'em, Whack 'em on the head.
"Wild Monk of the Dunes" - If you had problems with Blangonga before, you'll probably have more problems with this one. Anti-Quake armor is helpful, but not essential. My main strategy with Hammer and Dual Swords is to get to his crotch, stand between his legs, and attack mercilessly. Standing to his side is probably safer, though. More notes later on this fight when I have the time, as this is probably the most difficult fight that you need to HR up to 9.

copper blangonga was definitely a pain in the ass, but i actually found rathalos to be more annoying.
the volcano maps annoy me to no end because there are so many lava spots that hinder your movement but not the monsters. bleh.
speaking of annoyances in the game, i think capcom should take out mobs entirely. i have no fun killing them. i have no fun farming their mats. they are ridiculously annoying during boss fights, especially bullfangos. bleh all around.
im not sure what the point of mobs is anyway. it's like one of these archaic video game traditions that is kept around just because. if a boss needs to distract you with minions or something then he should be able to summon, like the blangonga.
I solo'd all of the HR8 quests and here's my observations:
Lavasioth: I couldn't take it down with a hammer, but it was amazingly easy with a longsword. Slash twice, do the jump-back attack and roll. That's usually enough to avoid all of it's attacks, but it took a really long time because I was hitting it's legs and supposedly it's weak points are it's head and chest/neck.
Rathalos, Rathian: Moar hammer. Rathalos was more annoying because it loved to fly around.
Copper Blangonga: I made Ice Fang (Ice SnS) to break it's fangs, and it was pretty easy as long as I didn't get greedy. With SnS you can block the quake effect, and it gives you an opening to attack. Make sure to wear armor with Earplugs.

Didn't you answer your own question right here? That's the whole point of the trash mobs. Of course, they are annoying... that's their purpose. If you don't want trash mobs, fight mobs in the arena. I treat them as highly mobile environmental hazards, and they certainly add to the difficulty of fighting a monster (which is why I enjoy their inclusion to the game).
As much as I hate Vespoids, I recognize that they are in the game to prevent ranged users from exploiting raised terrain with little/no danger. And to paralyze overconfident hunters who aren't situationally aware.

Lavasioth is fairly easy with a hammer. Just keep going after its left leg. Superpound sniping against the left leg (especially after a hipcheck) while running through him (rather than around him) is the key. Takes around 15 to 20 minutes to solo, total; it takes less time, if you have mad skillz and anti-quake armor. I've done no-armor runs of him before (took around 30 minutes or so, because you have to be extra careful). His training, though, was fairly difficult, although I found the lance to be one of the better weapons to fight him (mostly because it's Water element and you get Guard+2 on the armor).
Back to Copper Blangonga: When he jumps backwards (which is all the frickin' time), 90% of the time, he will throw a gigantic rock straight ahead. Maneuver to his side if you can, sheathing and running if you have to, every time he jumps back, and you might be able to get some quick attacks while he's in the throw animation. If he digs under ground, figure out what direction he is going, and move perpendicularly to that to avoid the giant rock. Either that, or roll in the same direction that he moves so that when he jumps up and throws, you'll avoid the rock and be in prime position to hit him (but risk eating rock fragments).
There's a prominent Newbie Guide video on Youtube that shows a Sword and Shield user going for the face and arms. I still maintain that the crotch hits are easier, dealing more damage because you get more hits on his back legs. But hey, whatever works for you folks out there. Some people prefer to get in the monsters face (and subsequently eat a short claw swipe). Standing at/near the back legs makes you vulnerable to the backhop, but he misses every other attack.

Highly mobile environmental hazards eh? Guess what they added in Tri? Monsters can spit out stationary environmental hazards, so you have to have even more situational awareness. Rathalos' jump bazooka leaves a pillar of flame on the ground... the upgraded poison khezu thing spits out a poison fountain that hangs out for awhile... the lion king thing (still don't know its name) spits out balls of water that fountain in place for a long time after (saw three active one time).
Yay for making fights more difficult!

For whatever reason, the Quest Bar in MH3 seems to only list quests in Ranks a la MH1. I guess without recolors, seasons, and 70+ monsters, Capcom thought the MH2 features weren't necessary? It still feels like an unnecessary step backward, especially since listing quests by stage or by species would still be useful.
You know, this might actually mean there isn't a large number of individual quests offline.

That would make me a sad panda. Sometimes I just don't feel like going through the trouble of getting online and teaming up with random people. However, a stable group would be quite the incentive to hop on.
Does anyone know if the individual drop rates of monsters are increased if you're fighting two at the same time, and also whether their hitpoints are lowered?

There's a prominent Newbie Guide video on Youtube that shows a Sword and Shield user going for the face and arms. I still maintain that the crotch hits are easier, dealing more damage because you get more hits on his back legs. But hey, whatever works for you folks out there. Some people prefer to get in the monsters face (and subsequently eat a short claw swipe). Standing at/near the back legs makes you vulnerable to the backhop, but he misses every other attack.
Yay for making fights more difficult!

[edit]Oooooh shit, it's arrived
I will report my experience after 6 hours of work
You know, this might actually mean there isn't a large number of individual quests offline.
PSN: theIceBurner, IceBurnerEU, IceBurner-JP | X-Link Kai: TheIceBurner
Dragon's Dogma: 192 Warrior Linty | 80 Strider Alicia | 32 Mage Terra
That would make me a sad panda. Sometimes I just don't feel like going through the trouble of getting online and teaming up with random people. However, a stable group would be quite the incentive to hop on.

It'll be just in time for MHTriFreedomUniteUltimate (for the DS), right?
