I started a new character, too, although I wanted to get a few dozen hours playing him before telling anyone. Basically, he's a Pokke Farmer. I am ONLY going to be making weapons and armor that can be made from either bought materials in the town or directly from the Pokke Farm. I don't gather in any missions and I sell off EVERYTHING that I earn in the rewards. I don't even carve monsters. After about 10 hours, I have farmed out an Iron Katana Gospel (damn those Machalite and Earth Crystals... only one mining point = many runs to get ore). Iron Katana Gospel totally wrecks all of the early missions, including HR 1 to HR2. I'm looking forward to the day Trenya brings back some Khezu parts so that I can make an Eager Cleaver and basically destroy all of the Elder missions.
It takes so disgustingly long to farm out the materials needed for even basic weapons, and I still don't know what I'm going to do about armor (I have a full set of Battle Armor, Blademaster, but I can't think of any other set that I can make from just Pokke Farm materials). Fortunately, hundreds of hours playing the game have made me less dependent on the actual armor rating.
Also, a complete lack of a health bar for the monster is actually one of "features" that appeals to me about monster hunter. I was actually disappointed when I found out that Monster Hunter used a traditional "hit point" system in the background, and I was hoping that it had something more complex (the damage calculations ARE quite complex, so that's sufficient for me).
are you going to use training school missions? There are some seriously kickass armour sets from there which only require bugs and ores and such, along with the coins and tickets you get from them.
I'm going for full healer S at the moment, but you need to do rajang training for it, which is unbelievably hard.

The 1st rank of quests in MH1 & MH3 is pretty much all tutorials, and only the tip of the iceberg. (They added a training school in MHG and carried it on through MH2, MHF, MHF2, & MHFU). MH2 also had an incredibly huge in-game manual which has a smaller form in MHF2/U. There so much more to learn which no in-game tutorial can teach you. Try some videos on youtube if you want help, that's about the only thing I could think of.
A demo consisting of the training quests would actually be a long but uneventful demo; lacking impact. There are no boss monsters to fight yet and concepts are generally inroduced one mission at a time (basic controls, gathering crap, how to cook meat, delivering crap, combining items, killing small fry). The gear you start with is also pathetic and nowhere near as fun as what you have in the demos. I honestly think throwing you to the wolves is better, though I wouldn't say I'm known for good sense.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
I would add Hahnsoo's excellent post to the OP plus some general weapon strategies but it appears it would've gone waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay past the 35000 character limit (the entire OP post edit is 46k characters :P). Looks like it'll have to go in a new thread some other time.
Hammer's still rule as ever in Tri. I killed Dos Jagi in a fraction of the time it took me with a Great Sword, and Roarudorusu was wrecked in 10 minutes.

Ugh.
I copy/pasted the info on my first post in the thread. I figure that no one was really reading my post there from before, so the space would be put to better use. I might do some armor/weapon analysis in that post as well.
Nearly all demos I've tried lately have been pretty good. Red Faction Guerrilla, infamous, Batman, hell, even demos for bad games like Fracture and Haze have done a decent job of showing what the full game will be like. Making a good demo shouldn't be that hard. Even if it's just the tutorial area and a bit beyond it, it shows what the games aiming at and helps you with it. Dropping you at end game areas in a game that's defined by player skill is ridiculous.
To be fair, Plum Daimyo Hermitaur and Hypnocatrice are considered easy (almost hilariously so) among the G-rank monsters. By the time Monster Hunter vets reach them, they are a walk in the park even without good gear (I was able to beat both of them in about 6 minutes with a hammer without drinking a single potion). But fighting a Hypnocatrice with high level gear (like in the demo) will be just as frustrating as fighting a Kut-Ku with low level gear, if you haven't developed the skills for it. I didn't feel like it was a cheap shot on the part of the devs, especially since the gear that you get for all of the weapon classes are so great (in my opinion). But again, the non-monster hunters that I've known who have played the demo found it to be exceedingly difficult, and I don't think their experience would have been different if they were given starter weapons and had to fight, say, an Elder Congalala.
That's the thing though. If they started it at the start of the game, and gave you all the tutorial stuff/information and a few low level quests, it's a much better first impression. Because you are at the start of the game and have the information you need to actually see how it works. Throwing you at end game enemies, with nothing except 'pick a weapon, pick a kitty cat, go get your ass kicked and figure out why you suck yourself' is a terrible way to do a demo. They might as well not have the demo. That way they don't get the portion of people that play the demo and just forget it.
The games I listed either give you gameplay tips as you go (all of them) on how to do things, or put you in the tutorial/starting area (Batman and Haze). It gives people an idea of what to do. Sure, it's a bit of hand holding, but when games are as complex as they are these days (and Monster Hunter is pretty fucking complex), a little hand holding in a demo goes a long way.
For what it's worth I'm a huge fan of Monster and I agree with you, but there is no good demo they could create for this game. It's not an easy game. Everyone get's rocked by the monsters the first time. The demo shows you what the game is actually like, and you have to decide whether this is your cup of tea or not. IMO if they had some super easy demo where you killed one of the ancient dragons it would be a huge bait and switch. Anyone that plays the demo and then buys the game know what they are getting into.

Are you completely insane?! I could see (maybe) bringing up a character only using gathering/carving, and selling all quest rewards... You'd be hurting for Monster Bone+ and the like, but at least you would have access (via carving) to the 75% of the materials that you're cutting yourself off from by not using anything but the pokke farm.
I started a new character in Unite using the import a Unite character option... I had a very large amount of rare-3 and under stuff... two full pages worth. And the zenny cap is 99,999 on materials... I sold off all my Kut-Ku materials the other day to fund my advanced weapon creations and ended up with 330,000 zenny... so I know I could hit the actual cap of 999,999z.
Also... there are some new female animated hair options in character creation, including 3 foot long dual pony tails that look awesome streaming behind you in bright purple. I'm just sayin.

Bah! Real men start from scratch!
Real, insane men, that is. Seriously though, it's only he true whackos that don't carve or take rewards. They're certifiably bonkers!
Just kidding, Hahn! :P
I'm actually not finding money to be an issue right now, since I'm only focusing on one weapon type, I save alot of scratch by only making/upgrading those types. Same can be said for armor, as I'm only making the few sets that would be of any use for gunlances only. An initial nest egg would have been nice to stock up on pickaxes and stuff, but by the 5-10 hour mark, I had enough to cover tools and basic necessities for a quest. I have to admit, this clean start has been quite refreshing; makes you really appreciate how easy some things are as you get higher, and is nice in that I can do quick missions again (most of the stuff my HR9 guy would need, usually require a bit more of a time investment) that I can benefit from.

What is the difference between the colored texts for "Clear!!"?
I know this was pretty much cleared up, but I actually was reading the manual for the hell of it just now, and ran across the "Clear!!" color meanings:
Red Clear!! = Cleared Urgent Quest, but there's still a secret quest on that tier. Purple Clear!! = Cleared Urgent Quest, and any secret that was available.
So, yeah, if anyone still had any doubts on that, there yah go.
My Pokke Farmer is now up to 4 star Elder quests and is doing quite well. I beat the Blangonga Urgent quest with Battle Armor and the Iron Katana Gospel in around 8 minutes. This was way faster than beating Khezu with Iron Katana Grace (around 18 minutes). I also unlocked one of my quicker ways of farming Pokke Points, the Daimyo Hermitaur Training mission. I can beat this with the Lance in around 3 minutes, netting 850 Pokke Points per run.
I may end up making an Eager Cleaver (once I unlock 500 point runs for Trenya) and beating the rest of the Elder quests with that. The final weapon, though, probably will be a hammer of some sort (probably the Anvil Hammer line).

Okay, I'm willing to grab this if I can find it on UMD (since I'm not getting a Go anymore). I'm willing to take a leap and learn how this works (and I have the time, since I get a couple of hours a day for portable gaming). But Capcom can go fuck themselves for that demo.
Just cleared HR9 dual Rajang quest using the fully-upgraded Blango bow and a full set of Lavasioth X armor. It was remarkably easy, the only thing that tripped me at first was that because of how huge the 2nd rajang is, I needed to roll away instead of simply running when it does that fist rampage attack. Now my right hand hurts because I had to use a double-claw hand technique so that I could hit the X button while holding on to the /\ button.

HR9 final invitation... or the 9* Elder quest Final Invitation?
If you solo'd the HR9 final invitation I'm very impressed... I only just recently completed the Elder 9* Final Invitation. Rajang is my nemesis.

Right thumb on X, index finger on /\ and middle finger on R for aiming.
It was HR9 Final Invitation but it's just as easy as Elder Final Invitation with a ranged weapon because their movesets are almost identical. As long as you can output enough damage to kill the first Rajang before the 2nd one comes it's no problem.

After dabbling with the original Freedom I manned up and got MHFU and even though I'm still doing beginner stuff I'm loving it. Once you get over the fact that you shouldn't be mashing the attack button like in every other game ever it really becomes a thing of beauty. This game's tutorials hold your hand way more than the original and I am so thankful for that.
I'm only concerned that I don't see myself playing online and worried I'll miss out on cool stuff or I won't be good enough to take down a certain monster.

Hint, to avoid the double claw when you are using a Bow: If you press the Square button while you are charging a shot, you will also do a roll or backhop, just like pressing the X button. It's much easier to hit while you are charging Triangle.

Therein lies my issue. I'm always so mercurial with the online functionality of games like this. Be it Diablo II, Phatasy Star Online (and it's various iterations since Dreamcast), or any other type of game where it's up to you to find a "lobby" of some sort and either A) play with friends, or play with unknown people who may or may not suck, or C) I suck, and be afraid to be one of...those people.
A) isn't an option for me - my friends aren't into these types of games. And usually winds up with the suck, or I'm a nub, at which point C) is applied to me.
So, I wind up with the offline version of the game. So far MHFU is chock full of goodness in that regards.

I went through that quest 5 times without knowing that.

Solution to B: Play with PAers! :P
When I think about it though, of random pick-ups and such, I'll have to admit that I've personally run into mostly decent players, quite a few exceptional ones, lots of fun friendly people, and a bearable amount of suckage here and there. Your mileage may vary, but I think you eventually can find good, fun games, learn who/which rooms to avoid, and build up a good list of folks you genuinely enjoy playing with.
Solution to C: Don't sweat it.
Playing Monster Hunter is like the jump program in The Matrix: everybody falls the first time. You will almost certainly get better with time and experience, and anybody who expects any other player to be some sort of monster hunting master demigod right at the get-go is a total idiot. And unexpected things always happen in this game, even to people that have played for thousands of hours.
And as for the solo experience; aside from teamwork and quicker killing aspects, you can do everything solo. It may be harder and take longer, but there isn't a single monster or quest in the game that can't be done on your own. Nothing is locked as multi-only, so you won't technically miss any cool stuff. Though I must say, that if you ever have the opportunity to try multiplayer, you definitely should. I regret not trying it sooner than I did.

Well, that's heartening to hear about "pick-ups" being mostly non-suck. Any ways, I guess I just have to get over my general anxiety about what people expect of me as another player in these games... I always feel like I'm doing something wrong, and imagine the player on the other end getting annoyed at me, thus ruining their experience.
And as far as playing with PAers, I probably should. I'll go read the OP again and get the PS3 AdHoc thing installed tonight.
That was just my experience, mind you, but hopefully it will be yours as well. To be honest, I had the same type of apprehension when I first started playing Ad Hoc Party. Especially when I had to do new monsters that I've never faced prior to playing online. That really worried me at the time. But I fortunately had a few good runs, as well as a couple of bad runs where I realized that my suckage wasn't nearly as bad as some other people, thus relieving my anxiety. :P
If you're trying Ad Hoc Party, just look for a room advertising your HR range, or anything that sounds friendly but not out of reach. There are helpful people out there, as well as folks of all ranges (not everyone is trying to do the hardest G quests, though sometimes it seems like it).
And Ice, that's hilarious. I love goofy ending screens. Kicking a bomb and flying out of a huge explosion is one of my favorites.

I've had some pretty good ending screens... like repelling an Elder Dragon after I died, so the victory screen is me laying on the ground dead... or climbing up a wall to get to another area a monster fled to and a certain someone firing off one arrow on a whim and it dying... so my victory screen is me climbing up a wall.
The victory screenshot is a great addition to the game, only wish I had the option to save them.

I love the "Great Success!" screens. I had one where my stupid Felyne slapped me with it's claw stick trying to go after a vespoid (which is out of the shot). Looks like he's beating me for his share of the profits.

Also... I was watching a MHFU stream on justin.tv and the guy is german, using the european version of Unite... and he restarted the game for some reason, and it showed the 5 languages... My copy always asks me which language I want to use when I start the game. Apparently I've got the european copy of Unite... I always thought it was weird that it asked me which language. The really awesome thing is that it works with the american version and the japanese version online... hope it works in person because I'm headed to japan :P

I'm excited to try the evolved monsters in Tri. Change is good, sometimes.
I'm finding it hard to return to Unite after using the sidestep slashes on the Long Sword (which I've just unlocked, I have a kickass para LS now). So damn useful.

Hypnocockatrice dead.
I figured I'd give the demo a third go. I read that the sword and shield were the most newbie friendly weapons, so I took that and a support cat. I figured I'd hang back and watch what it does to my cat before jumping in to fight, and figured out it's different attacks and openings it makes. Then I started chopping it's ankles to bits.
The fucker killed me twice, and once my cat hit me with a bomb while I was wailing on the fallen monster, but after a while it started limping - something I hadn't seen before. It killed me because I was stupid, and I had a look in my bases chest - traps and whetstones! I was out of whetstones and the trap was pretty useful. 36 minutes, dead monster. Not particularly fast, but I'm pretty happy with that considering it's only the third time I played the demo - and any sort of monster hunter game.
Another two join the fold! Muahahahaha. See... once it clicks... everything really starts to make sense. That strategy of hanging back and watching the monster for a bit is something you're going to want to do with pretty much every new monster you come across. Having a felyne to distract the monster while you watch is a bonus not found in the other games. Unite added so much to the game... Tri is too far away!
The Unite media install is around 600 megs. I have no experience getting Tri working on the Wii, but Airan and one other person have managed it, so they will probably pop up here shortly with a response... I'm pretty sure there's a how-to on the Minegarde forums as well.

I thought the US version of Unite also had multi-language support. I could be mistaken (going to double check the format number of my game when I get back home).
Add me to your PSN friends list (Hahnsoo), if you plan on doing any Ad-Hoc Party MHFU, as I'm always up for a game. I'm also less frequently on X-Link Kai (Hahnsoo1). I generally play on PST evenings, which is a little late for most folks out there, but I can (and do) play all day on weekends. PAers are still the best bunch to play with, buy you'll meet some nice and friendly folks online who just want to hunt.
While I have run into my fair share of jerks online, it's the cheaters that really get me. All sorts of folks come in with cheated cats or CWCheats activated. I don't mind that they cheat (they are ruining the game for themselves), and I don't have to play with them if I don't want to. I just wish I could screen out all the cheaters so that I can play the game that I want to play in peace.
I'll probably be online on Ad-Hoc Party tonight, actually, as one of my co-workers wants to do some hunting.

Also... there are some new female animated hair options in character creation, including 3 foot long dual pony tails that look awesome streaming behind you in bright purple. I'm just sayin.

[edit]Interesting, you get to keep some stuff like herbs and seeds and fish (so... rare-3 below?). If I stock all 4 pages full of Power Seeds I might be able to become super rich from the get go
Destiny! : Warlock - Titan - Hunter
Bah! Real men start from scratch!
Destiny! : Warlock - Titan - Hunter
I may end up making an Eager Cleaver (once I unlock 500 point runs for Trenya) and beating the rest of the Elder quests with that. The final weapon, though, probably will be a hammer of some sort (probably the Anvil Hammer line).
HR9 final invitation... or the 9* Elder quest Final Invitation?
If you solo'd the HR9 final invitation I'm very impressed... I only just recently completed the Elder 9* Final Invitation. Rajang is my nemesis.
PSN: Dyvion -- Eternal: Dyvion+9393 -- Genshin Impact: Dyvion
Wow, the dreaded double-claw technique! I've never thought of doing that. Can't imagine it was very comfortable.
-Louis C.K.
Therein lies my issue. I'm always so mercurial with the online functionality of games like this. Be it Diablo II, Phatasy Star Online (and it's various iterations since Dreamcast), or any other type of game where it's up to you to find a "lobby" of some sort and either A) play with friends, or
A) isn't an option for me - my friends aren't into these types of games. And
So, I wind up with the offline version of the game. So far MHFU is chock full of goodness in that regards.
Destiny! : Warlock - Titan - Hunter
Destiny! : Warlock - Titan - Hunter
Later, I also got a "finish" screen that was basically my own clust exploding in my face.

Destiny! : Warlock - Titan - Hunter
i wish i had 3 other people to play with, even if they are terrible, cause honestly, that would be awesome.
I've never played with anyone face to face. Only ever online.

PSN: Dyvion -- Eternal: Dyvion+9393 -- Genshin Impact: Dyvion
I'm finding it hard to return to Unite after using the sidestep slashes on the Long Sword (which I've just unlocked, I have a kickass para LS now). So damn useful.
Hmmm have I mentioned how much I hate you? Seriously after I have my copy of Tri we can be friends again... until then...
All kidding aside I will still probably be playing Unite as we primarly play it during lunch at work. So awesome.
I'll be buying it today.
I hate you all so much. Game plan this weekend is to find me a psp and copy of what sounds like liquid sex in game form.
How large of a memory stick do I need for the install? Also I have a wii, how hard is it to get monster hunter 3 working on that?
