Just got one from using airline miles, and it's pretty. But, what do I do now? I've been reading through previous posts on how to jailbreak it, but I haven't found how to yet (that's why I'm writing this!). I've got the 2.2.1 update, and I'm using a MacBook. I've been looking at QuickPwn, but it doesn't seem to have a Mac version for 2.2.1.
Is it even worth it to jailbreak at this point? Or is there enough free apps that it's pointless?
Also, what's a nice case for this? I bought a Contour Design for my old iPod, but I'm open to any suggestions.
You don't necessarily need to jailbreak it unless you want to really mess around with it, like turn it into a Star Trek style PADD.
There are some good free apps out there, but it'll take a lot of searching to find them if you just browse the store. I'm sure some other people will be able to point you in the right direction. The pay apps are ok, but I just don't see the point in paying for most of them.
Otherwise, it's an iPod. Put music or videos on it and listen/watch them.

Here are the apps that I use with mine. (As previously stated, jailbreaking really isn't worth it.)

Out of the ones up there, I'd say the two I get the most mileage out of are Facebook and Stanza (I downloaded all the Sherlock Holmes stories, and frequently whip through one when I am waiting for something else to happen).
First of all, take everything Obs says with a pound of salt.
That being said, there may or may not be any reason for you to jailbreak. Two of the biggest draws are unlocking an iPhone to use with another carrier and cell phone tethering, neither of which are relevant on a Touch. I personally don't know how I used my iPhone without Intelliscreen (adds in today screen functionality), but you might not care. I'd spend some time poking around the various homebrew software sites to see if there's anything that really motivates you to jailbreak - I suspect you won't find it worthwhile. The latest version of QuickPwn is indeed available for Mac on the official QuickPwn web site.
App Store apps I use regularly:
Facebook
Yelp
AIM
Tweetie (pay, but totally worth it over the other Twitter programs)
Wiki Mobile (same thing for Wikipedia apps)
Evernote
Amazon (great for doing price-checks while shopping)
Jailbreaking != unlocking. I'm pretty sure you'd have to jailbreak an iPhone to unlock it for other carriers, but you don't need to unlock it in order to jailbreak.
I'd argue that everyone should jailbreak their iPhone & iPod Touch for one reason and one reason only: Categories. Using that I was able to take like 8 pages of apps and organize them into a much more manageable page and a half. It's a feature that really should be in there by default.

I don't know if it's gotten any better, but I used to use Categories (or the equivalent) during the pre-App Store days and it was unbearably slow. I'd be able to flip across six or seven pages of apps in the time it would take to load a category page after tapping on an icon.
The speed has improved a bit, but it still is rather slow. Even so, I find being able to actually find a given application easily trumps flipping back and forth over several pages to locate whatever it may be.
Irrelevant. 3.0 does not look to provide $15 worth of benefit to me therefor I will not pay $15 for it. If it makes you happy, you may purchase a $15 iTunes gift card for me and I'll be happy to buy 3.0 when it's available however.

It's very relevant. How much do you make in a day
Completely irrelevant as always, eh Obsy?

If he made a million dollars a day it still wouldn't make sense for him to buy a pencil for a thousand bucks. If it's not worth the money to him, how much he makes is completely irrelevant.
I want an ipod touch, but considering my current 40gig ipod classic is almost filled to capacity I'm going to have to wait for a larger version to show up.
If I made a million dollars a day, I would always make sure that a billboard was outside Obs' window at all times saying 'Apple Sucks'. I'd make a profit by selling videos of his rage faces.

Be sure to alternate it with "My iPhone is jailbroken".
That's not really the cost of the pencil though, but the pencil extender. Which I now know more about than I thought I could, after finding www.penciltalk.org. I feel like I wandered onto a furry site or something. There is way too much devotion to pencils on that site.
My Touch is jailbroken pretty much for PocketTouch (change/play/pause songs/volumes without having to look at the screen), and I have not really seen any downsides to doing so.
But I tend to be wrong about these things so take that as you will.

Not only are you wrong, you're dead wrong.
You're causing all sorts of performance problems to your iPhone by having shit jailbroken.
Care to actually back that up with, you know, evidence? I've never had trouble and I've had my Touch jailbroken off and on pretty much since such a thing was possible. Sure, certain applications have crashed from time to time but the programs in question are responsible for that and official apps have crashed from time to time, too, anyway.
Obs is Steve Jobs PA login, keep that in mind when you read his stuff
I was most just reading this thread to get a good chuckle (since, for some reason, they always deliver). I don't own an iPod Touch, and my antagonism towards touch screens and iTunes probably would keep me from doing so.
But I must say, that is brilliant. Steve Jobs! Robman, you must work in Military Intelligence's seventh circle of Hell, and for that, I salute you.

Do not Jailbreak a fucking iPod touch.
Instead, visit the App store and you will find more than enough Apps for your iPod touch.
Over 40,000 Apps.

I was not aware of this when I got mine in december of 07
it sort of pissed me off
We're perfectly capable of deciding what we'll be unhappy about ourselves, thank you.

Are you saying you would buy a pencil for a thousand bucks if you made a million a day?
I would consider it. Certainly.
But I digress.

also probably not going to get the 3.0 update unless there was something i missed when reading about it
(I don't have an iPod touch and I don't intend to pirate anything, but I don't understand the purpose of jailbreaking an iPod versus an iPhone)
Or maybe I'm confusing jailbreaking and unlocking?
