My fairly stock UI with some addons on top of it.

    wowuidy3.th.jpg

I'd go for a full UI reskin, but I dunno if I could get used to it or not. Not to mention that I haven't found one I like really. ;)

According to the Blizzcon UI panel they're changing the combat log to be event based in 2.4 and basically making it look like SimpleCombatLog.

not surprising. they added scrolling combat text in and it's a similar-in-purpose mod.

question: what should I go with for damage meters?

Is it a full meter, or is it just a top hits monitor?

At any rate, SW_Stats is the best I've used. DamageMeters is a little weaksauce, and Violation looks pretty but it's lacking in parsing options. SW_Stats has just about anything one can think of, including the ever-popular Death Count and Inner Group Damage (showing how much damage has been done to party members via MC & the like).

Recap logs info about how people did damage (what abilities) how much they missed, were dodge, blocked, were crushed, were crit, etc etc. Healing/overhealing, etc etc.

So I've been out of WoW a while, and just picked it up again with some friends. When i quit, a popular and extremely useful addon was SpellAlert, which basically told you what spell the target mob/player was casting. I can't seem to find anything similar to that; has it's functionality been disabled?

Edit: Ha ha, I just logged in and saw the Tip about the option in the basic interface options.

Well, that is built into the base UI now.

    Enemy Casting Bar or something.

However, many addons do it better and prettier, such as Quartz, Natur ECB (sp?), etc.

SpellAlert is a bit different from enemy cast bars, though. I currently use WitchHunt which pops up a message when someone around me starts casting, such as "SumDurid gains Prowl," so I know to watch out.

so, grid is a raid frames addon, right?

and uh, damn what else did I install last night but never test... omen. what exactly does omen do? because last time I tried it I remember just being very confused and taking it out.

and my last question would be... threat meters. do they do exactly what they sound like? measure my threat compared to the tank and/or everyone else? as a healer, if it works that way, I think this would be invaluable.

sorry for the noobishness of these questions but I've never needed these thigns before, and am hoping to somewhat soon... I'd rather be used to them by the time I really need them than be forced to learn them under pressure.

Omen = Threatmeter. It's quite dynamic and warns you when you pull aggro. In the last few updates, it's been quite vital for measuring the whole DPS vs Threat within our raid.

Grid is more for casters/healers, ideally. However, it's a requirement for our raid. Our Warriors use it to see who pulled aggro off them so they can Intervene. Mages/Druids use it to see who to decurse, etc. And for healers, it's pretty fucking sweet. I've heard good things combining it with Clique but I'd probably fall asleep during the raids if I used that mod.

How well does Omen interact with KTM? That is, is there a point to running Omen if everyone else is on KTM, or will it still be able to determine seperate threat per mob?

If I'm not mistaken, Threat will only be able to know your threat per mob. For all KTM users you will see their global threat (likewise, you'll report your global threat to them).

Is a mod that allows you to assign spells/abilities to a mouse click when you click on a unit frame. Think it allows modifiers too, so alt+click does something different than just a click.

oh, I don't think I need that. I have macros made that let me do similar things with mousover+hotkeys (mouseover+shift+f removes magic for example).

If I hadn't already made all these macros I might go for it, but as is it seems unnecessary for me.

If you are the only one using Omen, then yes, the threat will seem a bit odd as KTM will report a LOT more threat than they actually have on the mob.

However, even if you are the only one (although you should convert your guildies -- it's awesome), the warnings that you are getting close to pulling aggro, the customization (I made my own personal threat bar twice as tall and lime green), etc. all make it well worth it.

I have my mouse 4 bound to a bar that I have hidden using Bongos and a macro that casts either on my friendly mouseover or myself.

It's kinda funny, our raid used to be vehemently anti-KTM, but then Omen sorta sneaked in because so many of us started using Pitbull unit frames, which has the Threat library built in, and then it sorta escalated... I used to be one of those people but man if it isn't useful to have a relatively accurate idea of your threat as a warlock.

I don't possibly get how people manage without knowing their threat. A few weeks back, I ran with a friend's 70 alt through an instance with a PUG. The tank had no threat meter and I got scared shitless. I didn't pull aggro, but without knowning how much threat the tank was generating, I essentially had to resort to DoT'ing and wanding.

Threat meter is the best thing since sliced bread for a Warlock.

[target=targettarget, help] as one of the conditionals in a macro should work well, too. Obviously the first choice would be to intervene your current friendly target, with that as a followup.

When you play for a while with no threat meter (the way it's been for years) you learn about how much you can do per fight through experience.

Threat meters are a huge crutch, and it's a shame it seems to be the direction the game is headed in since Blizzard's claim they will put one in the base client.

You can only learn from experience if you're using the same tank with the same gear on the same fights. Different fights might have different threat mechanics or your tank might get some new gear that increases his TPS or you might get some new gear that increases your TPS and then you're stuck having to relearn the threat cap unassisted. Threat mods help you quickly gain a basic idea of you and your tank's threat capabilities that previously you'd need many fights and a couple of deaths (which might also cause wipes) from pulling aggro to get. As such they're only a crutch if used as one and it's pretty easy to tell the difference between people who use it as a crutch and those who use it as a tool.

Seriously, it's not that hard. If you pull agro a couple times, just don't DPS as hard going forward.

Most bosses are taunt immune, so the tank has to build 110% of your aggro to regain. After, say, you did 100k damage to the Boss, that number is around 8k threath (averaging over all threath reducing abilities tec.). Good Luck doing that before the Boss rapes the DPS in question and subsequently a healer or two, especially if you got 0 rage to work with. What I am saying is that in most cases, aggro pulling does result in a wipe because there is literally no way to know you are going to pull aggro until you do so, and then its to late. Its not like the boss is looking at you funny seconds before he switches targets - one second its all right, the next second something big and ugly is coming your way.

That's why you learn how much dps you can do in a 5 man and not on a 25 man boss. I thought that part was assumed.

Seriously, people played MMO's for most of the past 10 years with no threat meters and got by just damn fine, just because they're possible with WoW doesn't mean it's suddenly necessary for survival.

It seems you want people to undershoot their DPS and then slowly push it up until they wipe the raid: why? Why's it a crime to get an educated guess from this mod so you start closer to your goal?
