So my girlfriend's dog (a mini-dashund) was recently spayed. They also expressed her anal glands (ugh).
Anyways, the last couple days, we've noticed a very strong coppery smell coming from her anus. Today when I was taking her out I noticed a white pus like substance coming out of her anus. I wiped it off with toilet paper and immediately noticed that horrible copper smell again.
She's perfectly active like normal, eating fine and all that. No blood that I can see. She had her staples (from the incision) taken out last week, but the scar has no sort of leakage coming out of it.
My only thought right now is that something's up with her anal glands after they were expressed.
I told her if it was still happening after a day or two that I would take the dog in. Do you guys think that is wise, or should I bring it in immediately?
Take the dog to the vet. Anal glands are funny things, and its probably nothing, but if that was pus and not a normal secretion it needs to be dealt with before the glands get impacted or the infection spreads. And in the future, express the anal glands yourself a couple of times a month so that they don't get so gross.
According to Wikipedia (I'm not a dog owner, so I was curious), the discharge is supposed to be watery in consistency, and yellow or light tan in colour. Pus leaking from the anal glands is a sign of infection. Best to get it taken care of right away.

Usually anything coming out of an animal's butt that =/= poop is a good reason to call the vet. Sounds like an infection's set in, kill it with some medicine before it spreads.
