Who is it that groovy shark?
No wait
Grooveshark is an online music radio station, kind of like Pandora or Last.FM. It can still recommend songs to you, but you can also build your own playlists by selecting songs from an extensive online library and adding them to a queue.
Most importantly though is that you can save and share the playlists with anybody, they don't even need a login to listen to music.
Also it's infinitely better than Pandora because people outside of the US can use it.
Here's how you do it:
Go to
www.grooveshark.com
If you want to create playlists and stuff, first you have to signup. So far I haven't had any spam from them.
Once you're signed up, put any song or artist you like into the bar.
You'll get a list of songs. You can either play them, or hit enque.
Making playlists is easy, just drag songs into the order you want them.
You can find your saved playlists by clicking your profile button on the right hand corner, and the selecting the playlists tab.
Clicking the 'more info' button on a selected playlist will give you a detailed look at the playlist content, as well as liking to a URL for listening.
Do you guys like downtempo electronica/chillout music?

and i still wonder how it is legal
What spring does with the cherry trees.
Right now it's free though, and seems to be on the level. You can also upload your own music, with the understanding that you can't upload pirated music.
Share your playlists! Post in this thread!

I didn't put much work into it because I'm doing other things and didn't have much time to refine it but it's all Architecture in Helsinki and The Go! Team because I heard them on KEXP recently and want to hear more of their stuff. So I just have it on random play right now.
I'm liking the Kooks
Also the Arcade Fire is the only song I've recognized so far, hahaha
oh well, still a nice service
yep I got indie cred like fuck
hold on let me go make my fall out boy/foo fighters playlist

This is pretty good! The third song has this kind of James Brown feel to it that I really like.
In no particular organizational state.
"Sandra has a good solid anti-murderer vibe. My skin felt very secure and sufficiently attached to my body when I met her. Also my organs." HAIL SATAN
I saw them when they opened for Clap You Hands Say Yeah
hmm, I like your fun stuff playlist a lot
also Lost Salient, the first song in your playlist is rad
so tonight the one thing i wanted to do was rip the best album ever from vinyl to mp3 so i could have it on my new iphone. i set up the usb turntable connection and audacity on my laptop, make sure my network is configured so i can get the data to my desktop for easy manipulation, and drop the needle for some smooth grooves
when it's all done (it was the only enjoyable period of my night), i figure i can hop on the network and grab the files. no cigar. first there are ip conflicts - i've been meaning to work those out, so no biggie. then vista decides sharing files is not an option because i don't have a password? password? i turned off password sharing! and it never asked me for a password! nor did i ever set one!
so my network's staggering to a halt anyway and the raw file is like 200mb, so i figure, this isn't happening. i'll do this thing through a usb key
apparently tonight's the night my desktop doesn't want to play games with the usb key. it just doesn't show.
five reboots across multiple operating systems later, hey, i've got the data to another external drive that can be read. alright? alright. open it up. it's all there, looks sexy. i listen to it in playback for a moment, but something seems awry. oh well, better figure out how to skip the boring stuff and automatically cut the file up into tracks
i look up a tutorial
"the first thing you want to do is go into preferences and switch the input to stereo"
what?
what the hell kind of idiot program is this! i just spent hours trying to get this data and it was recorded in mono? why? jesus. not only does it mean i have to spin my precious robert palmer record again, doing unknown swathes of damage to it, i'm now going to have to go through this whole terrible routine of getting data about three metres across my room, between computers that, as my computers tend to be, are demonically driven by the prospect of my untimely suicide
i hate my life
Lately it's been all trance this, steve miller band that. Bleh
Grooveshark seems to be convinced that what I really want to listen to right now are bands that sound like Songs: Ohia, which is maddening in the sense that I'm not horribly depressed and melancholic at the moment, and those are the emotions which Songs: Ohia best facilitates.
I'm probably not as maddened as jezz, though, since I haven't even tried to rip vinyl to .mp3. Ever.

Oh man
you can upload your own music, to their servers?
I give it 3 months tops
It's stopped suggesting Songs: Ohia sound-alikes and gone on to Man Man for me, which is a-okay. I'm considering uploading my Builders & Butchers, since it only has two songs by them and they are my favouritest band at the moment. Does it allow you to share songs once you've uploaded them? At least I can share them with the world for the three months it takes for the Law to destroy Grooveshark completely, if so.

Not that I'm not enjoying this song about Edward the Young, because I am.

the first 4 songs I wanted to listen to that popped into my head
you guys should give me your playlists
"Sandra has a good solid anti-murderer vibe. My skin felt very secure and sufficiently attached to my body when I met her. Also my organs." HAIL SATAN
why don't I own that already
"Sandra has a good solid anti-murderer vibe. My skin felt very secure and sufficiently attached to my body when I met her. Also my organs." HAIL SATAN
oh man, this first one is really nice, Lost Salient
